Aerobic exercise – exercise that lasts a long time and uses a lot of energy to accomplish
Anaerobic exercise – exercise that does not use much energy and lasts only for very short time
Balanced diet – meals and snacks that provide the proper number of servings of foods from each
food group
Body composition – the proportion of the body weight that is made up of fat tissues compared to
bones, muscles, and organs
Body Mass Index (BMI) – measurement that is used to determine one’s healthy weight range
Body image – the way that you see yourself and imagine your body
Carbohydrates – a chemical compound of one or more simple sugar; includes sugar’ starches,
and fiber
Cardiorespiratory endurance – the ability of the heart and lungs to work efficiently during
physical activity
Conditioning – exercise that improves fitness for sports
Cross training – doing different kinds of exercises during conditioning
Dehydration – a condition in which the body does not contain enough water
Diet – a pattern of eating that includes what a person eats, how mush a person eats, and how
often a person eats
Disease – any harmful change in the state of health of body or mind.
Endurance – the ability to perform an extended activity without becoming overly tired
Exercise – any physical activity that maintains or improves one’s physical fitness
Family and social health – the condition of person’s relationships with others
Fatigue – physical or mental exhaustion, a feeling of extreme tiredness
Fats – an energy storage nutrient that helps the body store some vitamins
Flexibility – the ability to bend and twist joints easily
Food Guide Pyramid – a tool for choosing what kinds of food to eat and how much of each
food every day
Health – a condition of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being
Healthy weight range – an estimate of how much one should weigh depending on one’s height
and body frame
Heatstroke – a failure of the body’s heat-regulation system
Hypothermia – a condition which is characterized by having below normal body temperature
Lifestyle – a set behaviors by which an individual lives his/her own life
Maximum heart rate – the maximum number of times by which one’s heart can beat during
exercise
Mineral – an element that is essential for good health
Muscular endurance – the ability to use a group of muscles over and over without getting tired
easily
Muscular strength – the amount of force that muscles apply when they are used
Nutrient – substance in food that the body needs in order to work property
Malnutrition – a harmful condition caused by not eating enough food or not eating the right
kind of food
Media Influence – the way in which forms of communication including newspapers, magazines,
radio, television and the internet that affect a person
Mental and emotional health – the condition of person’s mind and feelings
Muscles – any tissue that is made of cells or fibers that contract and expand to cause movement;
a bundle of tissues that moves certain parts of the body
Obesity – a condition characterized by having too much body fat
Over training – a condition caused by too much exercise
Overweight – having or possessing above a healthful weight
Peer – a person who is about the same age as you are and with whom you interact everyday
Peer pressure – a feeling that you should do something because your friends want you to do so
Personality – a person’s unique blend of physical, mental, social and emotional traits
Physical fitness – the ability to perform daily physical activities without becoming short of
breath, sore or overly tired
PRICE – a treatment for muscles soreness, muscle spasms, strains, sprains, and bruises that
involves protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation
Protein – a nutrient that supplies the body with energy for building and repairing tissues and
cells
Relaxation – the state of doing something to take one’s mind off a problem and focus on
something else that is not stressful
Resting heart rate – the number of times by which your heart beats each minute when you are
at rest
Self-esteem – what a person thinks about himself/herself
Skill-related fitness – the ability to perform well in sports and physical activities
Stress – the combination of new or possibly threatening situation and the body’s natural
response to the situation
Stress management – the ability to handle stress in healthy ways
Stressors – anything that triggers a stress response
Target heart rate zone – a heart rate range that should be reached during exercise to gain
cardiorespiratory health benefits; about 60 to 85 percent one’s maximum heart rate
Vitamin – an organic compound that controls many body functions and that is needed in small
amounts to maintain health and allow growth
Warm-up – period of three to five minutes of easy physical activity
Wellness – a state of good health that is achieved by balancing physical, emotional, mental, and
social health
