3 SURFACE PREPARATION
PAINTING PLAN
3.3 CLEANING
Water soluble impurities shall be removed by washing with water or steam.
Grease, oil, temporary corrosion protection and chalk marks shall be removed by washing with solvents
and/or emulsifying agents.
4 APPLICATION OF PAINTS
4.1 GENERAL
All requirements specified in technical bulletins of the paint manufacturer, shall be integrally obeyed,
especially in relation to:
− Application equipment;
− Preparation of surface;
− Use of recommended solvents;
− Conditions of application;
− Application Methods;
− Drying time
− Interval between coats;
− Thickness.
The painting schemes should only be applied to surfaces conveniently prepared in the way described,
they shall be clean, dry, free from oil, fat, dust and any other impurity or foreign body impeding good adherence
of covering coat.
Each coat shall be applied immediately after complete cleaning and preparation of surface. Between
coats, as long as the time interval specified is obeyed, normally a simple cleaning of the surface shall be done;
in case bigger intervals must be given, because of force majeure, the surface should be rigorously sanded and
brushed, regardless of other necessary preparations.
The following criteria shall be used for repairing of existing painting:
− Existing painting shall be repaired if the damaged areas don’t exceed 5% of the global area and 20%
of localized area.

PAINTING PLAN
− In case the above limits are exceeded or deterioration of painting is a consequence of inadequate
surface preparation or wrong blasting specification, the whole painting shall be removed.
No painting application shall be done:
− When relative air humidity is higher than 85%.
− In rainy weather, fog or mist, or when they are expected to happen before the painted surface is dry.
− When the surface temperature is higher than 52 ºC.
− When the temperature of air is lesser than 5 ºC.
− When there is strong wind.
− When OWNER considers not convenient.
− Substrate temperature below dew point.
Thickness of dry film above the high points of blasted surface profile shall be equal to the thickness wished
for protection, as indicated in the scheme adopted and in the technical bulletins from the paint supplier.
Where necessary, remove weld, spatter, smooth weld seams and remove sharp edges by rounding to a
minimum radius of 2 mm or subjecting to a "three pass" grinding technique, as illustrated in ISO 12944 – 3.
5 INSPECTION
PAINTING PLAN
5.3 ADHERENCE
The test of adherence shall be carried out after the time for drying and curing the paint film is elapsed, in
accordance with standard ASTM D-3359, with X cut. Minimum acceptance level will be 3A.
Carry out a test for each 30 linear meters or a test for each lot of pre-manufactured piping parts, as long
as they don’t exceed 30 linear meters.
Carry out a test for each equipment.
For painting systems using primer based in inorganic silicate with dry film thickness per coat equal or
bigger than 75μm, the X test shall be used according to ASTM D- 3359 and minimum level of acceptance is 3A.
The tape to be used for the adherence test shall have adhesiveness degree of 40 ± 2,8 g/mm² (3M 810
tape or similar). Painting tape or similar will not be accepted in any circumstance.
As this is a destructive test, the areas of test shall be immediately touched up.
