PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1
MODULE 1

I. INTRODUCTION

What is research?
Research is a process of systematic inquiry that entails collection of data; documentation of
critical information; and analysis and interpretation of that data/information, in accordance with
suitable methodologies set by specific professional fields and academic disciplines.

Research is conducted to evaluate the validity of a hypothesis or an interpretive framework; to

assemble a body of substantive knowledge and findings for sharing them in appropriate manners; and
to generate questions for further inquiries.

II. LEARNING COMPETENCY

Learners are expected to adhere the importance of research and improve research competencies
by experiencing research itself.

III. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson you are expected to:

1. Demonstrate your understanding of the importance of research in your daily life.
2. Be able to use appropriate kinds of research in making decisions.
3. Be able to share experience and knowledge.

IV. DISCUSSION

➢ Self-Assessment
Instruction: Below are the list of skills that are used and needed for research. Using the rubric,
give yourself a grade on a scale of one (1) as the lowest, and five (5) as the highest.

Rubics:
5- I have the mastery of this skill and I can demonstrate it on an excellent manner at any given
time.
3- I have a good grasp of this skill and I can use it with time for practice and preparation.
1- I don't know this skill yet.

Question/s:

a.) Which skill/s do you consider yourself to be best at?

➢ Lesson 1: The Importance of Research in Daily Life

Research is significant in our everyday activities. It is the result of a thinking process that
involve students in questioning techniques or models.
Check the box below to understand more about inquiry-based learning.

According to Dayton and Falk (2001), the following are the characteristics of classrooms where
teachers emphasized inquiry-based learning.

• Inquiry is the form of authentic (real-life) problems within the context of the curriculum and/or
community.

• The inquiry capitalizes on students' curiosity.

• Data and information are actively used, interpreted, refined, digested and discussed.

• Teachers, students, and teacher-librarian collaborate.

• Community and society are connected with the inquiry.

• The teacher models the behavior of an inquirer.

• The teacher uses the language of inquiry on an ongoing basis.

• Students take ownership of their learning.

• The teacher facilitates the process of gathering and presenting of information.

• Teachers and students use technology to advance inquiry.

• The teacher embraces inquiry as both content and pedagogy.

• The teachers and students interact more frequently and more actively than during traditional
learning.

• There is an identifiable time for inquiry-based learning.

Question:

How does inquiry and research facilitate in finding

solutions to real-life problems and develop critical
thinking skills and life long learning?

➢ Lesson 2: The Characteristics, Processes, and Ethics of Research

Meaning and Characteristics of Research

Research is defined as the scientific investigation of phenomena which includes collection,

presentation, analysis and interpretation of facts that lines an individual‘s speculation with reality.

Characteristics of Research

1. Empirical. Research is based on direct experience or observation by the researcher.

2. Logical. Research is based on valid procedures and principles.

3. Cyclical. Research is a cyclical process because it starts with a problem and ends with a problem.

4. Analytical. Research utilizes proven analytical procedures ingathering the data, whether historical,
descriptive, and experimental and case study.

5. Critical. Research exhibits careful and precise judgment.

6. Methodical. Research is conducted in a methodical manner without bias using systematic method
and procedures.

7. Replicability. The research design and procedures are replicated or repeated to enable the
researcher to arrive at valid and conclusive results.

➢ Factors to Consider in Selecting a Research Problem

1.Researcher‘s area of interest
2. Availability of funds
3. Investigator‘s ability and training

Task!

Finding and Analyzing an Existing Research Study.

Instruction: Using the website given below, find an existing research that's aligned to the track that
you are taking. After choosing one (1) research paper, read and understand it, then answer the following
questions below.

1. What is the title of the research you have chosen?

3. What are the processes used in the research study?

Ethics in Research

Ethics generally is considered to deal with beliefs about what is right or wrong, proper or
improper, good or bad. According to a dictionary definition (Webster‘s 1968), to be ethical is to
conform to accepted professional practice.

Ethical considerations in conducting research

1. Objectivity and integrity

2.Respect of the research subjects‘ right to privacy and dignity and protection of subjects from
personal harm

3. Presentation of research findings

4. Misuse of research role

5. Acknowledgement of research collaboration and assistance

6. Distortions of findings by sponsor

Unethical practices in conducting research

1. Deceiving a respondent about the true purpose of a study

2. Asking a respondent questions that cause him or her extreme embarrassment; guilt emotional
turmoil by remaining him or her of an unpleasant experience

3. Invading the privacy of a respondent

4. Studying the respondents or research subjects without their knowledge

5. When analyzing the data—revealing only part of the facts, presenting facts out of context,
falsifying findings or offering misleading presentation such as lying with statistics.

V. ASSESSMENT

A.)

Instruction: Read and understand the statement and identify whether it is an ETHICAL or
UNETHICAL practice in conducting research. Write your answers on the space provided.

_____________ 1. Fabricating the results of the data.

_____________ 2. Properly citing a website, book, and qoutation a researcher used in his research.
_____________ 3. Asking the consent of a subject before conducting an experiment.
_____________ 4. Leaking personal information of the respondent without their knowledge.
_____________ 5. Non disclosure of the true purpose of the research.

B.)

Instruction: Answer the question in an essay form. Your answer must be a minimum of three (3)
sentences, and a maximum of five (5) sentences only.
