Intensive Writing

Grade Level: 4th

SOL standard(s): English 4.8 g) Use correct spelling for frequently used words.

Science 4.7 The student will investigate and understand the organization of the solar system.

Objectives:

o Content - I can write descriptive sentences about planets in the solar system.

o Language - I can write two sentences with correct spelling, that correctly describes
each picture of a planet.

Directions: There will be five photos of planets in the solar system. First you must answer the
question: What planet is this? You must correctly spell the planet name. Then you need to write
a descriptive sentence about the planet. The descriptive sentence could be:

● the order number of the planet


● about the size of the planet
● any fact they have learned about that planet.

Sentence Starters:

This is __________.

(Planet) is the biggest/smallest __________.

(Planet) is the closest/farthest _____________.

(Planet) has ___________.


Example:

Test Taker Reads: What planet is this? Write one descriptive


sentence about it. Test Taker Writes: This is Saturn. Saturn has
many rings around it. Saturn

Assessment Items:

Test Takers Write: This is earth. People live on earth. Earth
has water.

2. Test Takers Read: What planet is this? Write one


descriptive sentence about it.
Test Takers Write:This is Jupiter. Jupiter is the biggest

descriptive sentence about it.
Test Takers Write: This is Neptune. Neptune is the
farthest planet from the sun.

4. Test Takers Read: What planet is this? Write one


descriptive sentence about it.
Test Takers Write: This is Mercury. Mercury is the
smallest planet. Mercury is the closest planet to the
sun.
5. Test Takers Read: What planet is this? Write one
descriptive sentence about it.
Test Takers Write: This is Uranus. Uranus has rings.
Uranus has 27 moons.

Scoring:
Each correct response is worth 2 points, for a total of 10 points for the intensive writing
assessment. The student will be evaluated according to the scoring scale for writing complete
sentences with correct spelling (as described below). Sentences will also be checked to make
sure they are factually correct. Verbal teacher feedback will be given at the end of the
assessment for each section.

Scoring Scale:

2 Grammatically and lexically correct. All frequently used words spelled correctly.
1 Either grammar or vocabulary is incorrect, but not both. Some frequently used words
spelled correctly
0 Both grammar and vocabulary are incorrect. Few or no frequently used words spelled
correctly.
