Identifying and Assessing The Factors That Influence The Urban Heat Island Effect in A High-Density Communities: The Case of Sampaloc, Manila
The research of Ar. Elardo entitled Identifying and Assessing the Factors that Influence
the Urban Heat Island Effect in a High- Density Communities: The Case of Sampaloc, Manila
made me realize that architecture is not only about designing a building and giving comfort to
the people but also architects have to consider a lot of factors in which it would greatly affect the
people not only those who are using the building but also those people who are living around it.
As what I have expected, climate greatly affects the land surface temperature and which I think
is a very important factor in site planning. I also realized that mechanical intervention is one of
the most contributors to heat stress. This research opened my eyes to the environmental risk that
we have to act upon urgently so that the damage will be lessened for our future condition. This
study made use of instruments to be able to collect and produce data. To be able to formulate a
research as cohesive and effective as possible one has to exert so much effort not only in the
aspect of researching but also one has to find a technological material to be able to produce an
accurate result. Ar. Elardo measured the air temperature, land surface temperature, and humidity
in certain barangays and observed it in the first week of May and June. With this information she
was able to determine the direct and indirect factors that contributes to the urban heat island
effect. As an architecture student, I have now understood that Architects play a great role in
achieving comfort in the community. One of the direct factors of urban heat island effect is the
lack for open space and as an architect, we may be able to use our knowledge in building a
structure that would not increase the heat effect of the environment. On the other hand, one of
the indirect factors is the use of air conditioning unit, nowadays, people use aircon as a necessity
and does not utilize their location to obtain good ventilation in which it would lessen the heat
factor and be helpful in saving the energy. In conclusion, architects have a big responsibility in
utilizing the location, space, and even the factors which they can design a structure that would
not only satisfy the people but would also help the environment in the risk that it is facing.
