Every human being is blessed by some unique talents of his own which he always want to
materialize with the help of the tools given to him in the form of his hands. We find interesting
and exquisite pieces of handwork in every culture and society which depicts their values and
thoughts. There are vast variety of hand work which gives us a glance into the maker’s
thoughts, values and culture. Hand work could be needlework, embroidery, carvings,
engravings, bookmaking, weaving, origami, handwriting etc.
Keeping the importance of hand work in mind Montessori curriculum is prepared according to
the needs of a child’s interest in his culture that is art and craft etc. it is important for a child to
understand the significance of hands as a medium of expressions.
1. To explore and refine the creative side, Montessori provides opportunity for hand work
to the children.
2. It helps children in discovering the fact that hands are also a medium of expression.
3. It improves and enhances the motor skills of the child, particularly those of the fingers
and hands.
4. It builds a connection between a sensorial experience and the act of creation.
5. It determines through experience that practice improves a skill, and the world is full of
skills the child may achieve.
6. It gives the child various opportunities to create something they find meaningful and
aesthetical.
Apart from perfection of hand movements, handwork stimulates a joy that is experienced
through creativity. It enhances the knowledge about different art and crafts around the world.

A child starts acknowledging the artistic values of lines, patterns, colors, designs and textures.
The handwork taught in Montessori help them with the use and care of materials.
Children from 3 to 6 years have a natural liking of using their hands and working with different
materials. This inclination helps them concentrate on work of their choice, so it is the best time
to introduce handwork and culture to them. These handworks not only make a child enjoy
sense of achievement but also boost their self-esteem.
TOOLS
The tools used for handwork activities should be of good quality, child sized, nontoxic but not
toys. Proper child safety measure should be taken care of while buying the materials. Care of
tools must be taught. Coloring items should also be introduced.
TECHNIQUES
Any technique from around the world can be introduced to children. The teacher must start
with easy to complex activities. Interest of children must be taken in consideration. It is suitable
to start with activities of native culture. Creativity and experimentation of a child must not be
discouraged.
