Homework Chapter 1

Yamile Pena

Brand management

1. What do brands mean to you? What are your favorite brands and why? Check to see how your
perceptions of brands might differ from those of others.

For me, brands are the identity of a product or service. Through it we will recognize it and have
an idea of its quality and efficiency. My favorite brands are Samsung, Sketchers and Marvel. I
like Samsung because of the quality and innovation of its products. Sketchers are very
comfortable shoes and probably my favorite ones to wear. Marvel has really good stories that
keep surprising and entertaining not only my generation, but also older and younger people. I
think that most people will disagree with my choices. For example, I know for a fact that most
people rather Apple than Samsung because its products have better reputation in the market
and give you some kind of better ‘status’. When it comes to shoes, most people would rather
wear big brand shoes, while I prefer being comfortable and simple than spending money on
expensive shoes that probably will not make me feel that comfortable.

2. Who do you think has the strongest brands? Why? What do you think of the Interbrand list of
the 25 strongest brands in Figure 1-5? Do you agree with the rankings? Why or why not?

I would say that Coca-Cola, Apple, McDonald’s and Disney are very strong brands. All of them
have a wide target market which is very efficient for them. I do think that ranking was correct
when it was done (2011) but it has definitely change in 8 years. I thing the companies
mentioned in the list remain in the new one but probably in a different order.

3. Can you think of anything that cannot be branded? Pick an example that was not discussed in
each of the categories provided (services; retailers and distributors; people and organizations;
sports, arts, and entertainment) and describe how each is a brand.

I think Churches cannot be branded but they do function like one. People feel identified with
them, most of them think that belonging to one give them some kind of a better reputation or
that they make them a better person.

4. Can you think of yourself as a brand? What do you do to “brand” yourself?

Of course I am a brand, not a commercial one but my name is. People recognize me for my
name and have an individual opinion about me. They have to decide whether trusting me or not,
being my friend, recommend me or even invite to eat. Social media is the most effective way to
brand someone as a person, this is where you show people your best self so they can judge you
because of your posts.
5. What do you think of the new branding challenges and opportunities that were listed in the
chapter? Can you think of any other issues?

I would say that a very big issue with branding nowadays is that since the resources to get
people to know about your brand have expanded. It is more expensive and harder to catch
people’s attention. You have to be very creative and innovative if you want to be seen.
