Several constraints in facilitating assessments have surfaced during the period of designing

modalities for the continuity of learning. If these are not addressed properly, there will be
large-scale loss of assessment information. What is your proposed practical solution to make
assessment of learning still work even in a time of crisis?
Assessment of student learning is an important aspect in the teaching and learning process. It
enables the teacher to measure the learning progress of the students. A teacher can give a
valid, credible and reliable data if assessment is done in a face to face manner simply because
there are a wide range of assessment tools and strategies that the teachers can use to assess the
learning progress of the students.
However, due to the global crisis we are experiencing right now there are several constraints
in facilitating assessment. These constraints should be addressed properly to avoid a large-
scale loss of assessment information.
A lot of teaching assessment surface in the internet which can be use by the teachers to assess
the learning of the students and most of these assessments is effective when it is best use in a
face to face learning modality. But because of the pandemic can we still use different
assessment tools in facilitating assessment in both synchronous and asynchronous modalities
to avoid a large-scale loss of assessment information?

To addressed the several constraints in facilitating assessments first thing that we need to do
is “Do not Panic” we have to remember that we are not also educators but also “firefighters”
to stop the possible learning gaps due to the global crisis.
Second is that we need to make use of the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MEC)
drafted by the educators of the Department of Education as one of their responses of in
developing resilience in our educational system specially in times of the pandemic. With this,
educators now have clearer, and focused target competencies.
Way back 20010, Understanding by Design (Ubd) was introduced by Wiggins and McTighes
to the academe and this is to create, write or design a plan in a backward way. Wherein you
have to set first what the student will learn, second is how the students will be assess and
lastly how the students will learn . In this crisis why don’t we recreate Understanding by
Design in a way where it is beneficial in both teachers and students and which can be use in
different modalities.
After targeting the most essential competencies, that is the time to design which assessment
best fits to your learning outcomes and in order for you to do that you have to provide
students with clear assessment guidelines. After setting up a clear assessment guideline it is
also very important to re-visit your guidelines and check if these really measures the things
that the students need to learn.
In this time, where in vast information can be easily found in the internet, validity and
reliability of assessment information is one of the main concerns in assessment. Setting a
time-limited online exam is very common in assessing the learnings of the students. Teachers
should make sure that the questions that they are going to give to their students must not be
easily find in the internet.
Conventional time window assessment is also a great way of assessing students, this enables
the students to deepen their knowledge on the lesson. One example of this is an essay,
journals, reflections etc. where a student can freely own their learning. In this type of
assessment, a real time feedback from the teacher is needed for close possible learning gaps.
Oral Assessment will also do in facilitating assessment especially in skilled subjects, like
TLE, MAPEH and ICT. Students are more engaged in learning when they move and
demonstrate their learning. Make use of the student’s own knowledge in different cellphone
application, such as Tiktoks, Facebook videos, Instagram etc. and other platform in assessing
the learning of the students.
Self-assessment, peer evaluations, peer-evaluations with real time feedback, e-portfolios and
projects are some assessments that can help us in assessing our students, these methods must
be administered with a wide variety of regular paced assignments and providing timely and
meaningful feedback to the learners.
Most important of all is that whatever kind of assessment method that we are going to use
make sure that we are using appropriate rubric in each task. The rubric serves as a guide to the
student in achieving the desired outcome coming from the learning competencies provided by
the Department of Education.
In this global crisis a good communication with the students, parents and other stakeholder is
very important to achieve the end goals and to be able to put down the fire brought by the
pandemic.
