CHAPTER 2- MATHEMATICAL LANGUAGE AND SYMBOLS
RELATION
- a rule that relates values from a set of values (domain) to a second set of values
(range).
- a pairing of two quantities as ordered pairs (x,y)

FUNCTION
- is a relation where each element in the domain is related to only one value in the
range.
Examples:

FUNCTION NOTATION
Often in practical applications, the value of one quantity depends on the value of another.
Example:
{ ( 1 , 1 ) , ( 2,4 ) , ( 3,9 ) }
Input( Output
X) (Y)
1 y=x 2 1
2 4
3 9
Functions are often given names such as f(x), g(x), h(x), etc.
For example, “f(x)=x2 + 2”, this means that f(x) refers to the rule that assigns the y = x2
+ 2 to any real numbers x. Same for g(x)= x – 1 or for h(x) = x 3
Example:
Given: f(x) = x2 + 2; g(x) = x – 1; h(x) = x 3
Find:
1.)f(3)
f(3) = (3)2 +2
f(3) = 11
2.)h(2)
h(2) = (2)3
h(2) = 8
3.)g(5)
g(5) = 5 – 1
g(5) = 4

Example 2:
Given: h ( x )=x 2+ 2 x−8

1. h ( x )+ g ( x )
= x 2+ 2 x−8+3 x3 +12 x 2
= 3 x 3+13 x 2 +2 x −8
2. h ( x )−g(x )
= x 2+ 2 x−8−(3 x 3 +12 x2 )
= x 2+ 2 x−8−3 x 3−12 x2
= −3 x 3−11 x 2+ 2 x−8
=(−1)(−3 x 3−11 x 2+2 x−8)
= 3 x 3+11 x 2−2 x +8
3. h ( x ) • g (x)
=( x 2+ 2 x−8)( 3 x 3 +12 x 2 )
= 3 x 5+ 6 x 4−2 4 x 3

(x +4 )( x−2)
= ( x + 4)(3 x 2)

COMPOSITE FUNCTIONS

2. g ( f ( x ) )=g ¿)
= 2 ( 4 x +1 )
= 8 x +2
3. h ( g ( x ) )=h ( 2 x )

6. f ( g ( h ( x ) ) ) =f ( g ( x 2) )
= f (2 x 2 )
= 4 ( 2 x 2 ) +1
