Expriment No. 9 Analysis Using Tensiometer

This experiment aims to determine and compare the surface tension of different samples using a tensiometer. The procedure involves cleaning and heating a platinum plate, hanging it on the tensiometer hook, filling a glass bowl with the sample, and slowly lowering the plate into the sample to measure the surface tension when the plate detaches from the liquid surface. Multiple measurements are taken for each sample and the average surface tension values are recorded in a table. The measured values are then compared between samples and to literature values to analyze differences. Proper cleaning and use of the tensiometer equipment is important for obtaining accurate results.

Experiment No: 9

Experiment Name : Measurement of surface tension using Tensiometer

I. Aim : Determine and compare the surface tension of ( sample names )

II. Procedure:
Steps for analysis:
1. Take out platinum plate from wooden case.
2. Wash the plate carefully with Millipore water and then with acetone.
3. Thereafter burn the plate with Bunsen flame up to red hot.
4. Then hang on hook of tensiometer and switch on tensiometer – press ON.
5. Set mode PLATE (by button MODE, if it isn`t set).
6. Pour the sample (~100 ml) into the glass bowl and place it on the table of tensiometer.
7. Move up the table almost up to the lower edge of plate by means of roller for general shift (the
bolt on the right side).
8. Reset the system for measuring of surface tension by press button ZERO.
9. Move up with the table so that the whole plate is immersed into the sample.
10. Go down with table and at the same time follow display of tensiometer.
11. Carefully observe the display when the plate detach from the surface of liquid because value of
the surface tension will be the greatest here. Write down this value.
12. Repeat the measurements in the same way for all samples.

III. Result and Analysis:

1. Instrument name :
2. Measuring methods :
3. Sample name : Sample 1 =
Sample 2 =

4. Sample amount: Sample 1 =

Sample 2 =
Table 1: Observed data

Sample name Surface tension(N/m)

1. Compare the measured surface tension values of different samples and comment.
2. Also compare the measured values with the literature values and comment

IV. Precautions to be taken :

1. Use the instrument carefully
2. Hold the plate carefully
3. Wash the plate properly
4. Hang the geometry carefully in hanger.
