IELTS Writing Task 2

Estimated Overall Band Score: 9

Prompt:

E-mail has had a huge impact on professional and social communication, but this impact has
been negative as well as positive.

Do the advantages of using e-mail outweigh the disadvantages?

Model Essay:

Communication is a principal aspect of human society; thus, innovations in means of

communication will naturally have far-reaching consequences. Among the more recent of
these innovations is electronic mail, or e-mail, which has changed communication both in the
workplace and social sphere. Although there are some drawbacks associated with e-mail,
such as undermining work-life balance, the benefits, such as reliable communication, offset
the negatives.
Among the main pluses of e-mail communication is its incredible reliability. In other
words, if you want to send a message to a colleague or friend, you can be certain that your
message will be delivered to him or her, granted that you have typed in a valid e-mail
address. Other forms of communication, namely phone calls or letters are not nearly as
reliable. For example, if you call someone, that person may not be available and their
voicemail may be full. Likewise, letters may get lost, delayed, or delivered to the wrong
address.
Nevertheless, when used carelessly, e-mail communication has some drawbacks, in
particular, the potential it has for disrupting work-life balance. Because e-mail can usually be
accessed anywhere and anytime, it is difficult to disconnect from work after leaving the
office. For example, you may be on an outing with family or friends, when you receive a high
priority e-mail from your boss requiring immediate action. This disadvantage, however, may
be mitigated by a more disciplined approach to e-mail communication. For example,
workplaces can set certain guidelines on when e-mails can be sent or by when an e-mail
should be responded to. If these guidelines are followed, the disruption to work-life balance
can be avoided.
All in all, e-mail ensures highly dependable communication and when used in a
disciplined manner, the benefits far outweigh the possible negative impacts on work and
social life.
