WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

 Applies mathematics, physical and chemical principles to design millions of products and
services that we use every day.
ACCREDITATION OF ENGG PROGRAMS
 Reviewed by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)
 Criteria: Engineering program’s achievement, Program Improvement, Faculty, Curricular
Content, Facilities, Institutional commitment
WHAT IS CHEMICAL ENGINEERING?
 deals with the processes of changing raw materials into useful products, designing systems and
equipment or improving something that is already being used.

Job Opportunities in
 Pharmaceutical, Energy and Information Technology
 Quality assurance, Manufacturing, and Consultancy

Chemical Engineers
 are usually referred as Universal Engineers since they deal with a broad discipline.
 Conducts research to develop a better manufacturing processes, establishing safety guidelines in
handling hazardous chemicals, estimating the production rate for management and more

Difference between a Chemist and a Chemical Engineer:

CHEMIST
 works on laboratories to produce something new
CHEMICAL ENGINEER
 production of materials coming from the work of Chemists; examine the process and find
ways to improve it

EVOLUTION OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING (up to 19 th century)

 1635: John Winthrop Jr., opens the first chemical plant in Boston; specializes in the production
of saltpeter and alum
 1684: John Clayton produced coal gas by heating it through distillation
 1720s: Notable products of Thermodynamics made it to commerce by Thomas Newcomen as an
improvement of Thomas Savery’s steam pump
 1775: Antoine Lavoisier demonstrated that fire burns through an exothermic reaction between
combustible materials and oxygen
 American Revolutionary War: Nicholas LeBlanc devised a process which produces soda ash from
table salt
 1828: Friedrich Wohler synthesize an organic compound from inorganic compound
 1845: Hermann Kolbe synthesized acetic acid
 1863: Ernest Solvay perfected his process producing sodium bicarbonate
 1888: Course X which specializes in Chemical Engineering was first offered in U.S.
 1901: George Davis published The Handbook of Chemical Engineering
