CHAPTER 1:
FENG SHUI BASICS AND HISTORY
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice that emphasizes the belief that
all things emit energy, or Chi, that can affect the course of other things
around them. The basic elements, the wind, and water, are considered
the most important of the five elements because the wind provides the
air that we breathe, and water is an essential substance that our body
needs. Without the wind we would die in minutes; without water, we
would die in days. The combination of these two determines the
climate in the region we live in, thereby determining what food we can
get and how much food we can obtain. It operates on the idea that the
Yin and Yang and the five elements should be balanced in the body to
achieve health, happiness, and success.
The fact is that energy emanates from all things revolving around you.
The energy is known as Qi or Chi. The literal meaning of Chi is breath or
air. Of course, the philosophical or figurative sense is energy flow or life
force. The concept of this power is not limited to just the Chinese
culture. Chi has different names in various parts of the world: lüng in
Tibetan culture, prana in Hinduism, Manitou in the American
indigenous cultures, ruah in Jewish tradition, mana in the Hawaiian
belief system and vital energy in Western philosophy.
For you to succeed and be happy and at peace, all of these energy fields
must harmonize with one another. Imagine multiple people trying to
move a desk, each pushing in a different direction. Are they going to
get anywhere? No. It’s the same with Feng Shui. For it to work, all of
the energy forces in your life must be concentrated on a single area,
making it more efficient and more robust. This area will attract positive
energy ensuring your prosperity in love, work, health, and all aspects of
your life.
Another name for Feng Shui is the art of placement. It follows the belief
that how you place yourself, your furnishings and other possessions
within your environs will determine the life experience you have. It
allows you to bring accord, enjoyment, happiness and equilibrium into
your environment.
HISTORY OF FENG SHUI
Feng Shui is believed to have been practiced long before the invention
of the magnetic compass. Archaeologists have found that the Hongshan
and Yangshao cultures have the earliest recorded indication of the use
of Feng Shui. The Yangshao culture existed along the Yellow River
between 5000 BC and 3000 BC. The Hongshan culture was present in
the area between Liaoning in the south and Mongolia in the north,
approximately between 4700 BC and 2900 BC. This fact indicates that
the practice, or at least some form of it, was already being followed
about five thousand to seven thousand years ago.
Since the magnetic compass came into existence three thousand five
hundred years later, Feng Shui originally depended upon astronomy to
determine the relationship between the universe and humans. Ruins
excavated at Banpo in the Yellow River Valley were found to have their
doors aligned with the appearance of the Yingshi asterism right after
the winter solstice. An asterism means a group of stars that form a
recognizable pattern, regardless of whether they belong to one
constellation or more than one. These ruins have been dated to around
4000 BC. During the Zhou dynasty, capital cities were built once Yingshi,
now known as Ding, appeared in the sky. Various excavations have
yielded sites where buildings such as palaces were found to be standing
along a north-south axis. Also, the excavations of other sites show
signs of gaitain cosmography being used. Gaitain works on the principle
that heaven is represented by round, while earth is represented by a
square. Pretty much every capital city in China followed the rules laid
out by Feng Shui regarding layouts and designs. This fact is especially
evident in excavated sites that had grand structures, which were
aligned according to the rules of Feng Shui regarding their arrangement
and architectural plan. The rules were codified in the Kaogong Ji during
the Zhou period. The carpenter’s manual known as Lu Ban Jing covered
the rules for builders.
The oldest instances of Feng Shui instruments are the shi or the liuren
astrolabes. Archaeologists found them in tombs that dated back to a
period between 278 BC and 209 BC. They have the same markings as
those contained on a magnetic compass.
You can use Feng Shui in your office, or at home in each of your
individual rooms, or at your home as a more holistic approach. You can
use it anywhere that you're able to apply its concepts.
Your Feng Shui must be coupled with good intentions, kindness, the
sincere desire to help, and a positive outlook on life. You can start using
Feng Shui by setting your goals first and then determining your Feng
Shui using the Bagua Map. You have to identify specific goals that you
wish to achieve so that you’ll know what to focus on.
CHAPTER 2:
THE FIVE ELEMENTS OF FENG SHUI
The Five Elements are used to describe the shapes, colors and materials
that surround you and the attributes they bring to your life. For you to
succeed with Feng Shui, the five elements: water, fire, wood, earth, and
metal, have to be in harmony with one another. Each element has
specific shapes and colors and represents specific aspects of your life.
WATER
FIRE
WOOD
The Wood element brings in vitality, expansion, and growth in your life.
It signifies cooperation, new beginnings, and self-growth. The Wood
element objects are also wooden such as furniture, plants, flowers,
doors and picture frames. The shape of the element is rectangular, and
the colors associated with the element are green, and teal meant to
represent leaves from trees.
EARTH
The Earth element brings grounding, balance, and stability into your
life. It signifies control, nourishment, and balance. The objects of this
element are generally made of earth such as the marble or granite
countertops in your kitchen, the tile floors in your house and any clay
pots or accessories in your home. The Earth element's shape is square,
and the colors are the colors of the earth: brown like the land, yellow
like the sun and terracotta like clay.
METAL
Metal is strong, and so the Metal element brings clarity and strength
into your life. It signifies calmness, ingenuity, and excellent planning.
Metal element objects can range from wrought iron furniture to metal
headboards or even light fixtures. Even electronics and computers are
considered Metal objects as is fluorescent light. Metal is represented by
the round shape of a metal coin, and its colors are also metallic such as
gold and silver. Pastels and white and grey are also considered Metal
colors.
You need to use the Five Elements in your surroundings to bring the
powers related to the metals into your life. A roaring fireplace will bring
in the Fire element, which means an aura of energy. Adding an indoor
green plant will help you with blocked creativity since the object is
associated with wood. If it isn't possible to associate the objects with
the various elements, you can use the shapes and colors associated
with them to be able to enjoy those properties. However, you will get
the most power and achieve the best results if you combine the object,
the shape, and the element. All five elements are vital to good Feng
Shui.
CHAPTER 3:
WHY DOES FENG SHUI WORK?
In order to answer the question, “Why does Feng Shui work”, we first
have to ask the question, “Does Feng Shui work”? The simple answer is,
yes Feng Shui does work, but of course there is more to it than that.
This is where understanding “the Law of Attraction” comes into play.
You see, when you learn about “the Law of Attraction”, you begin to
understand that what you think about the most is what you get in life.
What you believe is what you receive. Let me tell you a story about
when I was a little girl. We did not have any money and going to the
doctor was out of the question, but I had a dry patch on my face just
below my mouth. This patch was irritating and red. It bothered me
most of the time.
My mother took a piece of paper, and she told me that we were going
to place the paper over the spot, draw a circle around it and burn the
paper, which we did. She also told me that by burning the paper we
were going to make the spot on my face go away. Being a young girl I
had no doubt that this would work because she told me it would.
The day after we burned the paper I woke up and the spot was gone.
This is kind of how Feng Shui works. Now, I am not going to tell you that
it is going to work for everyone because it does not. Just like I would
not tell you that the paper burning would work for everyone.
It is the power of belief that makes Feng Shui work. If you practice Feng
Shui and have no belief in its powers, it is not going to work for you.
Remember what you believe is what you receive. You see, even if you
follow all of the techniques in this book, without believing in it you are
doing yourself no good.
If you do all the things I tell you and say it is not going to work, that is
what you are going to get back. It will not work. But if on the other
hand, you do the best you can with the techniques you learn in this
book and honestly believe it will work than it will.
Think about it like this, researchers say that a medicine works as long as
it works on 75 percent of the subjects it is tested on. Now if the
medicine truly worked, wouldn’t it work on 100 percent of the
subjects? The truth is that if you don’t believe a medicine will work for
you, it can’t work for you. There have also been studies that have
shown that when a person is given a sugar pill and told it will have a
specific effect on their body it has that effect. The reason is because
their belief was so strong in that medicine that it worked for them even
though it was simply a sugar pill.
The fact is that it is all in your mind, so if you go and rearrange your
home and believe it will work it will. If on the other hand you have no
faith, it will not work.
So the answer for if Feng Shui works is yes, if you believe in it. The
answer to the question, “How does Feng Shui work” is all about faith,
belief and allowing it to work through our life.
There is a little bit more to Feng Shui than just faith, so even if you are
lacking in belief you may see some changes in your life. For example, if
you are living in a dark room with the windows covered, no pictures
and no color, you are going to become depressed. This will show in the
rest of your house.
If on the other hand, you change that one room, brighten it up, let
natural light in and follow the techniques of Feng Shui, you will find that
your mood lightens just as the room lightened. You will find that you
want to use Feng Shui not only in the rest of your home but in the rest
of your life as well.
So what I am saying is that if you don’t have as much faith in Feng Shui
as you would like just give it a try in one room of your home. Try using
Feng Shui in your living room and see what a difference it can make.
Finally, many people struggle with the faith part of Feng Shui, but all I
have to say to that is what do you have to lose? Honestly ask yourself if
you believe in Feng Shui, and if it works what have you gained? If you
answer honestly, you will see that you will gain an entirely new life.
Now ask yourself if you believe in Feng Shui and if it does not work
what have you lost? If you answer honestly, you will realize that you are
not going to lose anything just trying it.
CHAPTER 4:
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE USING FENGSHUI
Before you begin using Feng Shui there are a few things you need to do
to prepare. The first thing you need to do we talked a bit about in the
last chapter, but it is to open your mind and your heart to the
possibility of Feng Shui.
As I stated in the previous chapter, you have to believe that Feng Shui
will work, but there is more to it than that. You have to understand that
everything you touch is made up of energy and that this energy is alive.
You also have to accept that everything you do affects this energy
because you are the creator. You have the ability to create the world
you want by what you tell yourself each day. So if you tell yourself only
bad things happen to you, guess what, only bad things will happen to
you.
That is not how life is supposed to be. Instead you need to be telling
yourself that good things are attracted to you, that you are able to
accomplish all you set out to do and that you attract positivity in your
life. This is another part of Feng Shui, where knowing about “the Law of
Attraction” helps.
If you don’t know about “the Law of Attraction”, I suggest you do a little
bit of research, and even watch the movie, “The Secret” because it will
help open your mind to the possibilities of Feng Shui.
Next, you need to clarify why you want to use Feng Shui. What are your
intentions? Defining your purpose will help you see results faster. You
see, you can use Feng Shui just because you simply want to use Feng
Shui, but if you define your purpose: Such as bringing peace into your
home, making your home a more relaxing space or even increasing your
financial stability, you will be able to focus on using Feng Shui for that
specific goal. And you will see the results.
If you just choose to use Feng Shui for the general use of Feng Shui, you
will see some results in your life, but they will not be as defined as they
would if you stated your purpose for using Feng Shui.
The third thing you need to do before you start using Feng Shui is to
start making changes in your life right now. For example, if you are
going to use Feng Shui in your home, you need to first start by
removing the clutter from your home. After you have removed the
clutter, you need to thoroughly clean your home. Feng Shui is not going
to help you any if you try to use it in a cluttered and dirty home.
You also need to understand that no matter what, a Feng Shui guru will
tell you, you do not need to move out of your home to have good Chi. I
have heard many horror stories of someone calling a guru for
inspiration and advice. They end up being told there is no hope for their
home, and as long as they live there, they will not be happy or
successful.
That is some inspiration huh? When people are told this they literally
give up. Often times you will find that they stop taking care of the home
the once loved so much, they stop having friends over and the
withdrawal into themselves.
Right now, I am telling you that no matter what any, so called guru tells
you, there are things that you can do in any home; even if it is a Feng
Shui architectural disaster, which will help you create the Chi you are
looking for.
The beginning step is to clean up the area and remove all of the clutter.
After you do that the rest is easy.
I also feel it important to explain that Feng Shui is not a religion. It does
not matter what your religious beliefs are. You can still use Feng Shui.
You don’t have to convert or go through any strange ritual. It is simply a
way to ensure your environment affects you the way you want it to.
Feng Shui does not infringe upon any religious beliefs, and it is not
meant to replace religious practices. Just like “the Law of Attraction” or
Reiki, it is meant to be used as a tool to ensure you get the most out of
this life.
Now it is time to grab a notebook and start writing. You are going to
honestly go through your life and write down all of the areas you want
to see changes in. For example, are you okay with barely being able to
pay your bills, or spending your Friday nights alone in an empty
apartment? Maybe you are unhappy with your own ability to get things
done, or maybe you are sick of working for that boss who does nothing
and takes all the credit.
Whatever the issue is, write it down, later you will see use the BAGUE
categories start to emerge, but for now just write down all of the things
you would like to change in your life. Use the following questions to
help you out.
1. Are you happy with your current career? Do you earn the amount
of money needed to support yourself and your family in a manner that
is acceptable to you?
2. Are you happy with your current level of education, or given the
choice would you go back to school?
3. Are you happy with your current relationships with the other
members of your family?
4. Does the reputation you currently have cause problems in your
family or in your career?
5. Do you feel content and fulfilled in your current relationship?
6. Are you happy with the relationship you currently have with your
children, and are you happy with the way your children currently
behave?
7. Are you happy with your current state of health?
When you answer these questions, you will be able to look at the
BAGUE and find out what you need to do in your home to create good
Chi and attract what you need in your life.
CHAPTER 5:
CREATING A PROSPEROUS HOME WITH FENG SHUI
The Feng Shui on the outside of your house is as important as its Feng
Shui on the inside. The Chi flows around your place from outside
elements which is why it’s important to make sure you attract the
positive energy to go in your home.
Note that you’ll be able to tell a good outside Feng Shui on the outset
just by looking at it. Does your garage look okay to you? Does your
surrounding make you feel safe and comfortable? If not, you can bet
that you have a bad outside Feng Shui. Remember that the energy that
surrounds your home affects your overall personality, more specifically
your instincts. If your instinct is feeding you some negative vibes, be
sure to listen to it and make a change.
For starters, you need to clear out all unnecessary clutter. Clutter is a
form of energy blocker which prevents your home from taking in as
much positive energy as it could.
You should also try to avoid Sa Chi (attacking energy) and Si Chi (low
and lifeless energy), or at least manage them. Sa Chi can be fed by
sharp or pointing objects towards the main door. For this matter, try to
avoid a T-junction house, pointed wall angles and sharp structures if
you can. The farther these Sa Chi attractions are from you house, the
less bad Feng Shui you attract.
Equally unproductive is the accumulation of Si Chi. Si Chi can be found
in places where tragedy has happened. Avoid choosing locations where
there have been tragedy, stress or death. Si Chi accumulates over time
and it may stay in a particular area and this may affect your mood
immensely causing you to feel as lifeless and depressed as the energy
surrounding you.
APPLIANCES AND FURNITURE
Good lighting and ventilation is a must for every home. It helps the Chi
flow around your home easily, which is always a good thing when it
comes to home Feng Shui. Remember that Feng Shui literally means
‘wind and water’; therefore these two elements must take precedence
over the rest. Having a well ventilated area takes care of the ‘wind’
essentials.
To ensure that your home will have proper lighting and ventilation, put
some windows in every area of your house. Note that while you can
have fans and air conditioners, natural wind is still best in Feng Shui.
Wind in its natural state contains more positive and free flowing energy
than the stagnant/less rich air coming from air conditioning units.
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
ENERGY FLOW
A good home Feng Shui ensures continuous and consistent flow of Chi
all around the house. Aside from having good light and ventilation, your
home must also have good Chi entry points, which is primarily through
the doors.
For this, the focus should be on your home’s main entry. This is the
point where your home absorbs the entire Chi that flows from the
outside world. But what should you do to your home’s main entry?
For your home to have a strong main entry, it must be placed in a
position where it can directly access the outside. It must not be hidden
or blocked. It need not be a big door, just enough to accommodate as
much energy flow as possible.
Doors must also be positioned in such a way that the Chi does not
immediately flow out without going through all the areas of the house.
To be able to achieve that, avoid having parallel doors. Parallel doors
allow the Chi to enter in one point and easily exit through the other.
Instead, have the doors spaced out evenly. You could also use Feng Shui
decors to welcome positive Chi in your home such as round tables,
charms or even a vibrant rug.
Now that you have a good grasp of what a good home Feng Shui should
be, it is now time for the execution. Here are some tips:
Because you know how important a good outside location would be for
your home, make sure that you choose the perfect one. A good outside
location is a place where nature is closest, and where Si Chi does not
linger. For instance, do not buy a lot which is cheaper because it has
been flooded or abandoned. The money you’ll save will cost you in the
long run. Choose a location which is vibrant and oozing with positive
energy such as a good and quiet village in the city.
Your main entry will attract the Chi into your home. Make sure that you
make it as attractive to positive energy as possible by putting Feng Shui
decors and charms. You could also accentuate your main entry with
some miniature water fountains which symbolize prosperity and
success. You also have to eliminate energy blockers such as clutter.
Most importantly, identify the bagua area of the main entry and let it
guide you. After that, you should be able to know what you need to
strengthen the flow of the Chi into your house. The bagua will help you
identify which areas of the house are connected to specific areas in
your life. For instance, if the main entry of your house is located in the
Southeast portion, which is an area signifying wealth and prosperity,
you’d be able to know what to put there i.e. wood and water elements.
These are the most important areas in your home as far as Feng Shui is
concerned. These areas are often referred to as the “Feng Shui Trinity”
because they are the ones most connected to your well being. As a
general rule, always make these areas lively and full of positive energy.
For good bedroom Feng Shui, take note of the following:
• A bedroom needs a relaxing and sensual energy. In order to
create this kind of vibe, keep your bedroom as bare as possible.
Get rid of the television set, exercise bike or stack of work papers.
These things will remind you of work and responsibilities which
can make it difficult for you to relax and sleep.
• Make the bed the focal point of your room and all other things
just collateral.
• Maintain good air quality around the room by providing for good
air ventilation or some air freshener/purifier.
• The best Feng Shui colors for bedrooms are skin toned colors
ranging from white to rich brown.
• Choose vibrant decor in your room that pictures what you want in
life. Have uplifting artistic pieces rather than mystical, sad ones.
Ø To balance out all elements, you can also pitch in some art decors
in red (fire), brown (wood) and white (metal).
Ø Have some crystals hanging from the ceiling. As the Chi from the
water goes down the drain, the crystals will help retain some of its
energy so that the bathroom will not only be an exit point for the
Chi.
Ø Fresh flowers and fruits make for a good source of energy in the
kitchen. Always keep a bowl of fresh fruits on your kitchen table.
Putting some plants on your kitchen’s window sill is also
advisable.
Ø Yellow is a good Feng Shui color for the kitchen. You can choose
between a variety of yellow shades i.e. squash yellow/ butter
yellow or ginger yellow.
4. CHOOSE THE PROPER FENG SHUI COLORS FOR EACH AREA OF YOUR HOME
In choosing Feng Shui colors for your home, it is necessary to first know
the colors that represent each element.
Ø Water is represented by black and blue
You need to know that choosing one color for all the areas of your
house can be counterproductive. As you can see, the areas of your
house should represent each element in the place where it should be
strongest. Below are some color ideas that you may use:
• Green in the East Bagua Area to boost health and maintain happy
family relationships
Your birth element connects you with the Feng Shui of your home.
Remember that Feng Shui is all about making a particular arrangement
work for you, and that means it will work only if it’s in sync with what
you are.
For example, if your birth element is fire, you should definitely put fire
elements in your home such as red or triangular items. You would also
want to nourish your element by putting Feng Shui decors made of
wood as this feeds fire.
This will help you connect with the natural elements present in you and
your home.
You can discover Your Birth Element Right Here
Lastly, you do not have to be pressured into doing Feng Shui all the
way, especially if Feng Shui is quite new to you. Go at your own pace
and determine the goals you want to achieve in your home. Only
through this will you be able to really appreciate the power of Feng
Shui in your home.
CHAPTER 6:
TRANSFORMING YOUR HOME
You will need to understand the bagua map of your home if you are to
decorate your home through Feng Shui to promote good chi. However,
that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some tips and tricks that you
should try to put in each and every room. Before continuing you must
create a bagua map of your house. Find out how each room of your
house is oriented, and remember to put activating elements into the
room as shown below. There are still some basic tips for best colors and
Feng Shui for your home, but you do need to personalize it to your
home’s layout.
You may not have time for a bagua map just yet, but if you’re looking
for something a little more simple and comprehensive, then you’ll find
that this quick guide is for you. Decorate based on the bagua map
above, and refer to the tips outlined below for more detail. Using a
bagua map doesn’t have to be hard, and when you apply it with this
quick guide and the tips you’ll find for each room, you’ll be able to
create a house that is, energy-wise, in perfect balance. Remember that
the colors are all connected to certain elements and themes, as the
bagua map explains.
EAST ROOMS:
If you are looking for a room that is facing east, no matter the purpose
of the room itself, you would need to incorporate the colors related of
the wood element. These colors are generally green and brown. Blue
and black can also be good colors for an east facing room, but you do
need to limit your fire colors such as purple and red, in order to keep
the energy in balance.
SOUTHEAST ROOMS:
Southern oriented rooms are ruled by the element of fire. When you
are trying to create a positive chi energy in any south facing room,
you’ll want to use fire and wood element colors. This includes yellow
