Let’s start the weekly module by gathering your ideas about social dance. As we go
through this weekly module, keep on thinking about this question:

What comes out to your mind when you hear the word social dance? Write
down your ideas on the boxes.

Social Dance

Let’s start the activity by asking your parents, guardian or any family member what is
their idea about social dance.

Write their experiences or thoughts in “What is on their Mind?” worksheet. You can also
add your reflections about their sharings.
What is on their Mind?

To have a clear idea, let us have a short overview about Social Dance for Community
Fitness

LESSON 1

SOCIAL DANCE
Social dance are communal dances performed in any social
gatherings in any given space. They are synonymously referred to as ballroom dance,
but ballroom dance is performed in ball or formal social function. To promote community
fitness, your physical activities must involve community as well. Dancing is one activity
that can be done individually, with a partner, or in groups. Dance done or performed
with a partner or in a group are called social dance. In order to attain a physically fit
body, you need to have not only good nutrition but also to engage in physical activities
such as dancing, running biking, etc.

Ballroom Dances

Nature and Background of Cha-Cha

The cha-cha-cha (also called cha-cha), is a dance of Cuban origin. It is danced to the
music of the same name introduced by Cuban composer and violinist Enrique Jorrin in
the early 1950’s. This rhythm was developed from the danzon-mambo. The name of the
dance is an onomatopoeia derived from the shuffling sound of the dancers’ feet when
they dance two consecutive quick steps (correctly, on the fourth count of each measure)
that characterize the dance.

The basic cha cha dance steps are as follows (from the lead's perspective; the
follow will mirror these steps) The lead steps forward with the left foot, letting the body
weight rock forward through the hips. Lead's weight shifts back to the right foot, again
letting the hips roll in time.

How do social dances play a part in community fitness?

Community and ballroom dances are activities that may involve the community.
Physical activities like these, utilizing some of the skill-related fitness components, leads
to fitness. If members of the community are involved, this will also promote community
fitness.
The fitness of a community may be attained by community effort. Attaining proper
nutrition and engaging in physical fitness activities can be fun if everyone is involved.

LESSON 2 Community Dance

What is community dance?

Community dance is not about learning set steps to music. Rather, it encourages
participation and collaboration in a creative process of making dance, connecting to
others, developing authentic movement, learning new things, and enhancing one’s
sense of greater community. A community dance is a dance which is directly
participated in by the people who have the same values and different far from other
communities. Basically, with the definition itself, community dance is also considered
as a dance of a group of people or ethnicity which they are distinctive. This may
include some dances such as tribal, folk, or some traditional dances. Since folk dance
is the part of a community dance, we need to rediscover its history or nature based
on the area where it belongs.

Pangalay Dance
- Pangalay (also known as Daling-Daling or Mengalai in Sabah)
is the traditional “fingernail” dance of the
Tausug people of the Sulu Archipelago and eastern c
oast Bajau of Sabah.

- The dance has a similarity to classical Balinese and Thai dance,

- where it is also the most distinctively Asian of all the southern Philippine
- dance because dancers must have dexterity and flexibility of shoulders,
elbows, and wrists movement that strongly resemble those of “Kontaw Silat”.

Francisca Reyes-Aquino (March 9, 1899 – November 21, 1983)

was a Filipino dancer and academic noted for her research on
Philippine folk dance. She is a recipient of the Republic Award of
Merit and the Ramon Magsaysay Award and is a designated
National Artist of the Philippines for Dance.

Pangalay Dance Properties

Costumes: Dancer wears a typical Joloano costume.
Accessories: Expert and Professional dancers use janggay, an extended metal
finger nails in each finger. The rich people have janggay made of solid gold or silver.
Accessories Footwear: Dancers are in barefoot.
Music: Played as many times as necessary. Count one, two, or one and two to a
measure.

Movements/Steps Particular to Dance:

There are no definite directions, sequence of figures, number, and kinds of steps,
hand movement, and position used when performed by the natives. For teaching
purpose, the figures of this dance may be created, and dancers may form their own

Skill-related Fitness Components Essential Dancing

Dancing gives health benefits. Thus, participant in any form of dancing activities in
school or in the community would surely benefit one’s physical and emotional health.

What are some of the skill-related fitness components that are essential in dancing?
1. Balance – it is the ability to maintain an upright position while standing and
moving.
2. Coordination – it is the linking of senses through the brain to the different parts
of the body to produce a smooth, quick, and efficiently-controlled movement
3. Strength – it is the muscle’s ability to generate for force against physical
objects.

Fitness Test
Push-up

Purpose: to measure strength of upper extremities

Equipment: exercise mat or any clean mat
Scoring: record the number of push-ups made
PROCEDURES:
a. Lie face down on the mat in standard push-up position: palms on the mat under the
shoulders, fingers pointing forward, and legs straight, parallel, and slightly apart, with the
toes supporting the feet.
FOR BOYS:
b.1 Straighten the arms, keeping the back and
knees straight. Lower the arms until there is a 90-degree
angle at the elbows (upper arms are parallel to the floor).
FOR GIRLS:

First Aid for Injuries and Emergency Situation

Although dancing provides a lot of benefits, sometimes you might experience heat
exhaustion due to rigorous dance activities. For this reason, we must know how to deal
with this kind of emergency.

What is Heat Exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion is a condition whose symptoms may include heavy sweating and a
rapid pulse, a result of your body overheating. It's one of three heat-related syndromes,
with heat cramps being the mildest and heatstroke being the most severe.

Causes of heat exhaustion include exposure to high temperatures, particularly when

combined with high humidity, and strenuous physical activity. Without prompt treatment,
heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke, a life-threatening condition. Fortunately, heat
exhaustion is preventable.

9|Page
Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion may develop suddenly or over time, especially
with prolonged periods of exercise. Possible heat exhaustion signs and symptoms
include:

 Cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat

 Heavy sweating

 Faintness

 Dizziness

 Fatigue

 Weak, rapid pulse

 Low blood pressure upon standing

 Muscle cramps

 Nausea

 Headache

What is the first aid treatment for heat exhaustion?

Untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke, which is a life-threatening condition.

If you suspect heat exhaustion, take these steps immediately:

 Move the person out of the heat and into a shady or air-conditioned place.
 Lay the person down and elevate the legs and feet slightly.
 Remove tight or heavy clothing.
 Have the person drink cool water or other nonalcoholic beverage without
caffeine.
 Cool the person by spraying or sponging with cool water and fanning.
 Monitor the person carefully.
 Contact a doctor if signs or symptoms worsen or if they don't improve within one
hour.
