Tefl ch 6 lesson plan Present Simple

Class__beginner adult____________ Date___12-13-2020_______

Level and number of students: 15

Lesson Duration: 60 min
Aims/Objectives: Teach how the present simple can be used to describe habitual actions in one’s life.
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to…
Write 10 present simple statements on their own.
Understand the difference between affirmative and negative present simple statements.
Comprehend, via text and aural input, present simple statements.
Assumptions: Students have already been introduced to some basic verbs and nouns to describe
common daily routines. This will help them complete and connect to present simple statements.
Anticipated Problems:
Students might find it difficult to know the proper present simple to use. Like live, lives, and lived. So we
will go over these differences in steps and have them build on that knowledge.
Students might find it confusing when we switch to third person. Start with first person and before they
begin, remind them of how verbs change in the present simple when switching tracks to the third person.
This is a lot of information so it could be useful to have everything printed out, even what you write on
the board. This will also help for those who might miss class.
Materials:
20 complete the sentence handout, 20 fact or routine handout, 20 student interview handout, 20
homework handout, 20 pencils.

Introduction (5 min)
Introduce present simple on top of the daily tasks they already know. The present tense is the base
form of the verb:

I work in London.

But with the third person singular (she/he/it), we add an –s:

She works in London.

Write this on the board and go over each section before moving on.

I watch TV every night.

You go to the shops with my mom.

We live in London.

They finish school at 3pm.

He watches Tv every night.

She goes to the shops with my mom.

John lives in London.

finishes school at 3pm.

We use do and does to make questions with the present simple. We use does for the third person
singular (she/he/it) and do for the others.

We use do and does with question words like where, what and when.

Negative

You

He Don’t play for the baseball team.

She DO NOT take the bus to school.

We Doesn’t drive a car.

They

We use do and does to make negatives with the present simple. We use doesn't for the third person
singular (she/he/it) and don't for the others.

Presentation (10 min)

Complete the sentence
For this writing activity, the students will use the present simple to create statements from a list of
prompts on their handout. Have the students make affirmative and negative sentences on their own:
We use the present simple to talk about something that is true in the present, something that
happens regularly in the present, and something that is always true:
1. Jane / take the bus to School
2. I / like bacon sandwiches
3. He / study English in the morning
4. John / go to school
5. Claire and I / listen to the same music
6. It / have / big swimming pool
7. Dave and John / go / cinema every week
When finished, review as a group.

Practice(s)* (10-15 min)

Fact or routine? worksheet

This writing activity forces students to think about the functional uses of the present simple as they create
sentences about themselves.
Start by explaining the difference between present simple statements of fact and routine. The students will
then write five facts about themselves and five repeated actions. They should use a mix of positive and
negative. As the students are completing the task, write some examples on the board to help them.
Teacher: Do I speak Chinese?
Student: No, you don't.
Teacher: (After writing 'I don't speak Chinese' on the board) Is this a fact, or routine?
Student: A fact!
Facts
I live in Scotland.
I don't like chocolate.
I've got brown hair.
I don't have a sister.
Routine
I don't do karate.
I sometimes go to the cinema.
I don't go swimming in the morning.
I get up at half-past eight.
I don't play sports in the evening.

Students report information about their partner using the present simple sentences from the previous
task.

Following on from the previous activity, have the students swap papers with a partner and report what
they find. Before they begin, remind them of how verbs change in the present simple when switching
tracks to the third person.

Production (15-20 min)

Simple Present | Student Interview

We often use adverbs of frequency like sometimes, always and never with the present simple:

Routines

1. Talk to your classmates about routines in their lives. Write their names in the chart.

2. Write sentences about your classmates’ answers.

Example:

Student A: Sergio, do you shop online?

Student B: No, I don’t. I never shop online.

Find a student who… Name Sentence

Never shops online. Sergio Sergio never shops online.
Takes a vitamin everyday
Eats the same thing for
breakfast every morning.
hardly ever exercises.
works at night.
often wears a hat.
reads a newspaper every day.
often sings in the shower.
rarely sleeps later than 7:00
a.m.
always brings a backpack to
school.
never drinks coffee.
usually studies on Saturday
night.

Review (5 min)

Teacher will return to the board to review simple present statements and then ask 2-3 students to share
with the class what they do when they get home from school (I take off my shoes, I do homework, I eat
dinner). As a form of listening comprehension, after the students state their plans, the teacher will ask
other students a few comprehension questions.
