Ballet dance is a classical dance form which demands strict rules in grace, precision
and create expression through movement. Ballet was originated during the Italian
Renaissance in the fifteenth century. Ballet came from the Italian word which means
“Ballare”. The first performer of ballet was men. When Catherine de Medici of Italy
married the French King Henry II, she introduced early dance styles into court life in
France. At first, the dancers wore masks, layers upon layers of brocaded costuming,
pantaloons, large headdresses, and ornaments. Such restrictive clothing was
sumptuous to look at but difficult to move in. Dance steps were composed of small
hops, slides, curtsies, promenades, and gentle turns. Dancing shoes had small heels
and resembled formal dress shoes rather than any contemporary ballet shoe we might
recognize today. Although they do not vary in nature, classical ballet is known for its
exactness of technique that highlights pointed toes and turnouts, high extensions and
gracefulness (Velardi, 2012). It also uses traditional mime that utilizes gestures for
conversation instead of words. Contemporary or modern ballet, on the other hand
“mainly uses ballet steps and more natural movement to convey meaning” (Castle,
1998). It incorporates elements in both classical ballet and modern dance that allows
a greater range of movement that does not support the strict bodylines that are
traditional in any of the classical ballet techniques. (Aparato, Brebante, Callo, Dajime,
2017) The first ballet company in the Philippines is the Cultural Center of the
Philippines Dance Company (now Ballet Philippines) and Dance Theatre Philippines.
In 1969 Alice Reyes with the support of Eddie Elejar and the Cultural Center of the
Philippines, Ballet Philippines (BP) is widely recognized today as a cornerstone of the
Filipino cultural identity.
My Personal reflection
My personal reflection about ballet is that it is my first time to encountered this subject
and my first time to dance ballet. I admit, ballet is not that easy to dance it requires
strength, endurance, balance and flexibility. And I’m not that flexible enough. The
dance steps are difficult to execute. But ballet thought me one thing and that is
discipline. Ballet gave me a chance to explore more in different kind of dance like this
that I never encountered before. But now I already have some insights about ballet I
can say that I have learned it with myself since we’re currently in online class and I’m
already acquainted to this dance.
