Activity 2 : What to know


Examples:
1. Steven prepared dalandan juice for his mother. He mixed 1/5 cup of
dalandan juice and 3/5 of water?
Solution: Using representational model.
1. The whole was divided into 5 and take 1/5 of it as shaded for the juice.
2. The whole was divided into 5 again and take 3/5 of it and shaded for water.
3. Determine the number of shaded parts that will serve as your answer.
Alternative Solution:
1/5 + 3/5 = 4/5
Similar fraction, can be added by combining the numerator and just copy the common
denominator.
Example 2. 5/9 + 2/9 = 7/9
Example 3. 5/8 - 2/8 = 3/8
Example 4. ½ + 2/5 = 5/10 + 4/10 = 9/10 (LCD 10)
Example 5. 9/24 - 4/15 = 5. 9/120 - 8.4/120 = 13/120 (LCD 120)
Example 6. ¾ + (5/6 – ½) = ¾ + (5/6 – 3/6) = ¾ + 2/6 = 9/12+4/12= 13/12
Example 7. 3 ¼ + 1 ¼ = 4 2/4 = 4 ½
Example 8. 10 5/6 – 7 3/8 = 20/24 – 9/24 = 3 1/24
Example 9. What is the difference when the sum of ( 7/9 + 1/3 + 5/6 ) is subtracted from the
difference of ( 5 5/7 – 1 2/3)? 2/4
Example 10. Anton spent 2/5 of his money on books. He spent another 1/5 of his money on buying
pens. What fraction of his money was left?
