LIFESTYLE AND WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Aside from studying, what activities do you do at home, in school,


and in the community? Look at the list of activities on the
succeeding page. How much do you spend for each kind of
activity?

Direction: Check (/) the column with a happy face (☺) if you always do the

determine the status of your health and fitness? Do you think that spending
longer time sitting in front of the TV while eating junk food for entertainment or
using your gadget for social media updates would help you to be strong, fast,
and flexible?

Are you physically fit? How can you tell if a person is physically fit? In what
way does the level of fitness affect one’s health? (Write your answer inside the

What is PHYSICAL FITNESS?

Physical Fitness could be defined as the optimum level of health where


healthy individuals can perform daily activities free from any form of fatigue.

Physically fit individuals have the capacity to maintain and do daily tasks
without experiencing stress making it easier to meet daily demands.

Physical fitness helps individuals become free from a high-risk health


conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke,
osteoarthritis, some cancers (colon cancer), sleep apnea, and respiratory
problems.

Health Related Components – Refers to the ability to perform daily physical tasks
associated with the disease prevention and functional health while Skill Related
Components –is the ability of the human body to perform physical tasks
efficiently for a specific sport.

What is Fitness assessment?

A fitness assessment is a series of measurements and tests that will


help identify the status of one’s physical fitness. There are several standard test in
fitness assessment. The test includes evaluating body mass index, resting heart
rate, and health-related tests and skill-related test like body composition, lung
capacity, flexibility, speed, balance, agility, power, strength, and coordination.

Can you determine now if you are at risk?

With your BMI and WHR results, you can now determine if you are at risk,
your body mass index is one indicator of your risk of having different lifestyle
diseases. Cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer
are examples of these diseases.

Lifestyle Diseases

What are these risk factors related to lifestyle diseases?

Aside from being overweight or obese, the following are the other risk factors
related to lifestyle diseases.

1. Family history of premature heart disease.


2. Cigar rete smoking.
3. Alcohol use.
4. Physical inactivity.
5. Unhealthy diet
