Organisers of the competition: ALIDA VANE FOUNDATION supported by Kurzeme Phil-


harmonic Ltd.

Aims: The purpose of this competition is to further young singers' vocal and artistic ability, im-
prove their performance skills, discover new talent and promote these emerging artists.

Date and venue: 25 October 2020, Ventspils, ‘Latvija’ Concert Hall, Lielais prospekts 1, Latvia.

COMPETITION RULES

1. The Competition is open to singers aged between 12-22, of any nationality. The competition
will be divided into 4 age groups. The cut-off date for determining the age of participants is 25
October, 2020, inclusive.

Age Groups
Group A 12-14 years
Group B 15-16 years
Group C 17-18 years
Group D 19-22 years

2. The contest will be in 2 rounds.

1) Qualifying round (application deadline 30.09.2020) – participation via video recording up-
loaded publicly to YouTube.

2) Final round 25.10.2020*, 11:00, ‘Latvija’ Concert Hall, Ventspils.

Concert and awarding ceremony 25.10.2020, 17:00, ‘Latvija’ Concert Hall, Ventspils.

* In the case of an emergency situation in Latvia on the 25.10.2020, with restrictions on public
events, or if one of the contestants, due to the restrictions caused by COVID-19, will not be able to
enter Latvia, it will be possible to participate in the competition final remotely, provided the
contestant is able to perform live, via online performance on Zoom platform, 25.10.2020, at the
time specified by the competition organizers.
3. The criteria of evaluation system:

The participants of the competition will be judged by a professional international jury.


The competition jury will evaluate:
 Voice, technical skills, intonation (1-15 points)
 Musicality and interpretation (1-5 points)
 Presentation and artistic personality (1-5 points)
 Programme suitability for age and voice (1-5 points)
 Maximum points: 30.

The jury has the right to award three prizes in each age group, to award only one competition
winner title or not to award a competition winner title and to distribute the cash prize among the
best winners of the competition.

The decision of the jury is final and irrevocable.


Members of the jury are not allowed to judge their own students.

4. Announcement of results and prizes

No more than 6 participants in each age group can be nominated for the final of the competition.
Participants nominated for the final will receive the invitation electronically to the e-mail address
specified in the application by the 05.10.2020.

The final results of the competition will be announced at the award ceremony.

There will be three award-winning places in each age group.


All participants of the final will compete for the Audience Award and for the main prize - Alida
Vane Award (500 EUR) and the title of the winner.
Other prizes and cash prizes may also be awarded in the competition.
All finalists will receive diplomas.
The finalists' teachers and the best accompanist will also be awarded with an appreciatio award.

Absence at the award ceremony will automatically cancel the prize.

5. Repertoire

Participants in the qualifying round must submit a video link to YouTube, made publicly available
until October 26, 2020.
For the final of the competition, the participants of all groups must prepare 3 - 5 verses of any
folk song, sung a cappella, which will be performed only at the request of the jury.
All compositions must be performed in the original language and from memory.
Arias from operas, oratorios / cantatas or other large-scale vocal-instrumental compositions must be
sung in the original tonality.
One of the compositions in the final programme may be from the repertoire of the qualifying round.

Qualifying round programme groups A, B, C:
• 1 folk song, a cappella
• 1 free choice vocal work (song, romance, aria)
Maximum length of programme: 5 mins.

Qualifying round programme group D:

• 2 pieces of different musical character, one of which should be an operatic aria, in the ori-
ginal tonality.
Maximum length of programme: 7 mins.

Video must include


• name and surname of the participant,
• reference: Qualifying round programme for the International Alida Vane Vocal Competition for
Young People 2020;
•1st piece - composer's name, surname, title of the composition (opera, role)
•2nd piece - composer's name, surname, title of the composition (opera, role).

The video must have been recorded in 2020 and cannot be edited. Compositions must be performed
from beginning to end, and from memory.

Final round programme:

All finalists of all groups have to prepare 3-5 verses of any folk song, sung a cappella, at the
jury’s discretion.

Final round programme for groups A and B perform 2 free choice compositions with
accompaniment. Programme length up to 5 minutes.

Final round programme for group C perform 2 pieces of their choice with accompaniment, one
of which is a Baroque or Classical period aria from opera or oratorio / cantata genre.
Programme length up to 6 minutes.

Final round programme for group D perform two opera arias, one of which must be from the
Baroque or Classical period.
Programme length up to 10 minutes.

6. Application process

Application for the qualifying round is by sending the application package electronically via e-mail:

Applications will be accepted from 15.09.2020 to 30.09.2020.

The application must include:


1. Completed application form (Appendix No.1)
2. Video link
3. A copy of the document certifying the participation fee, which indicates:
Participation fee 6.SVK, participant (name, surname)

7. Participation fees

The participation fee for the qualifying round is 25 EUR. The transfer must be made by 30.09.2020.

Final round participation fee 30 EUR. The transfer must be made by 15.10.2020.
If the participation fee is paid by the educational institution, an invoice can be issued upon request.

In case of illness, absence or technical problems, the participation fee is non-refundable.

The competitors will pay travel and living expenses.

For an additional fee, the participant has the opportunity to receive the services of an accom-
panist. Fee 20-30 EUR (paid on the spot).

8. Final round schedule

The final round of the competition will be held on the 25.10.2020. at the concert hall "Latvia",
Ventspils, Lielais prospekts 1, Latvia.

When registering for the final round of the competition, participants must present an identity
document and prepare 1 copy of their scores for the jury.

9.00 - 10.30. Acoustic rehearsal for group A and B contestants.


10.30 - 12.30. The final of the competition for A and B group contestants.
12.30 - 13.30. Acoustic rehearsal for group C and D contestants.
13.30 - 15.30. The final of the competition for A and B group contestants.
17.00 – Concert and awarding ceremony.

The competition is open to the public. The finalists of the competition perform in concert costumes.
The winners of the competition will perform in the closing concert free of charge.

The organisers have the right to take photographs, make video recordings of the competition and
broadcast the competition live on social networks, as well as for non-commercial purposes, use
personal data of participants, video and audio material to cover the competition on radio, TV or
social networks.

OTHER REGULATIONS

It is highly recommended that contestants provide their own insurance with adequate coverage.
The competition will not accept any responsibility for accidents occurring to contestants during the
competition.

Applicants in need of a travel visa are kindly asked to prepare their travel documents in advance.
