SENIOR GEOGRAPHY PROJECT

THE SENIOR GEOGRAPHY PROJECT (SGP) IS A MANDATORY REQUIREMENT

Weighting: 30%

Task Type: Senior Geography Research Project

Outcomes:
The student:
P7: formulates a plan for active geographical inquiry (primary research, hypothesis)
P8: selects, organizes and analyses relevant geographical information from a variety of sources (primary & secondary
research)
P9: uses maps, graphs and statistics, photographs and fieldwork to conduct geographical inquiries (primary & secondary
research)
P10: applies mathematical ideas and techniques to analyse geographical data
P11: applies geographical understanding and methods ethically and effectively to a research project (primary research
methods)
P12: communicates geographical information, ideas and issues using appropriate written and/or oral, cartographic (map)
and graphic forms (written report, presentation)

Task Requirements:
Students will undertake a research project by investigating a geographical issue of their choice.

To complete this task students will need to complete:

 complete a research action plan
 conduct primary and secondary research on the issue
 write up a report on the outcomes of your research and your findings

This is a large task and needs to be completed in sections and progress reports are to be submitted
throughout the time available.

Task Due Dates:

 Task Issue:
 Progress Report 1: 10.3.2017
 Progress Report 2: 12. 5.2017
 Final Report: 23.6.2017
Submission Requirements:
 Progress Reports are to be submitted in hard copy on the provided worksheets.
 The final report needs to be submitted in hard copy as a bound document or in an appropriate
folder.

Assessment Policy:
 If an assessment task is submitted late and there is no successful illness/misadventure appeal,
students will receive a zero for that task. Students should still submit the task to demonstrate the
task outcomes and gain necessary feedback.
 All work presented in assessment tasks must be your own. Forms of malpractice or misconduct in
an assessment task by a student may result in a zero for that task.
Marking Criteria:
Students will be assessed on how well they have demonstrated the following in their project:
 relevance of topic to geography
 effectiveness of research techniques utilised
 relevance of data obtained
 depth of study
 explanation of the research process used
 presentation of the research findings
 discussion of research findings
 conclusion
 ability to evaluate research processes utilised
 presentation of project
 sources utilised
