Intro:
Hello and welcome to the Joseph Lewis Podcast today I am going to be talking about this
weekends upcoming FA Cup fixtures. Theres 2 fixtures ive got my eye on this weekend,
these are Manchester United vs Liverpool and my club Wycombe Wanderers vs 5th in the
Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur.]
Overview:
So lets have a look at the big all premier league clash between two fierce rivals in the
northwest, Liverpools form has taken a bit of a dip in recent times with only one win in the
last 5 games which is quite the contrary with Man U winning 3 in there last 5 and climbing to
the summit of the premier league. The last time the 2 played each other was only last Sunday,
the match ended up being a 0-0 draw, now obviously that won’t happen this weekend as due
to the corona virus there won’t be any replays so one side has to win. That 0-0 draw will be
much more positive for United as they have come so far in the last year when they last played
Liverpool at Anfield in a 2-0 loss, they’ve proved to everyone they should be put in the mix
for the title so they should be going into this game with a bit more confidence than Liverpool,
who have slipped in recent times. I reckon this is happening as Liverpools front three haven’t
been as prolific as previous years I think that issue is down to 2 things: the injury crisis
Liverpool are facing and the fact that there front 3 are struggling to find the back of the net, in
fact they are going through there worst league streak since February and March 2005, having
failed to score in their past three games. This could be due to the fact that a lot of teams have
figured out Jurgen Klopps tactis of trying to catch the opposition in there own half. But know
they don’t tend to pass at all in there own half and play with more players behind the ball
making turnovers of possesion much less likely to happen and this clearly affecting Liverpool
going forward. The second reason Liverpool aren’t playing well is the injury crisis they are
going through right now, 3 of there first choice defenders are out injured forcing there first
choice midfielders to fill the gaps of the defence. So because of that Liverpool cant play like
they normally do in the Midfield as there normal midfields are tied up at the back. They are
also missing Deigo Jota up front as he was bringing the goals for them.
Manchester United:
So Manchester United are going into this with strong form in the league and haven’t lost
in there last 11 games that is excellent form, they also beat Watford in the cup last round
with a 1-0 win, many would have thought they would have done better in that fixture but
they did create a lot of chances and where unlucky not to win 3 or 4 nil. They go Into this
with a very strong team with no significant injuries or suspensions so they can definetley
take adavantage of Liverpool but I don’t think they will as this is a cup game and lots of
premier league mangers don’t respect the cup and so they wont always play there best
players. I expect man u to field a team similar to what they fielded against Watford. I am
expecting Dean Henderson to start in Goal Brandon Williams at left back and Wan
Bissaka at right back. Bailly and Tuanzebe will hold the centre of defence while Van de
beek will play in the midfield with Scott McTominay who shined against Watford last
time, he should also start as captain. I’m expecting Mata and Daniel James out on the
wings with Lingard and Greenwood up front.
Liverpool:
Liverpool are currently going through a rough patch compared to Man U. They are
struggling with a injury crisis and poor form, I cant really see them starting the best team
that they can. With the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Deigo Jota and Neiby Keita
out injured I don’t think they want to add to that the list so I can’t imagine them starting
the best team but at the same time this is a very important game for the fans even if theyre
not actually at the game. I’ll expect Allison between the sticks, Andy Robertson and TAA
at right and left back respectively. Id expect Fabinho the youngster Rhys Williams
holding the centre of the defence. I would expect Jordan Henderson to start as captain and
CDM and Wijnaldum in the left midfield, he would be hoping to add to add to his FA cup
tally after scoring against Villa earlier on in the cup. Id like to see Shaqiri on the right
midfield. Id expect the usual front 3 in this fixture. Salah, Firmino and Mane.
Roundup:
I think this game is going to end up being a close and boring game like last weekends game, I
reckon it will end up Being a 1-0 win for Manchester United.
Overview:
Back in 2017 during the FA Cups 5th round Wycombe faced Tottenham at the old
White Hart Lane this was an exhilarating game where Tottenham came out victorious
with a 4-3 win. At half time Wycombe were up 2-0 after a Paul Hayes Volley and
Penalty. Pocchetino realised that Wycombe where causing problems for Tottenham
and midway through the second half he bought on Son and Alli. This completely
changed the dynamic of the game and Tottenham bought it back to 2-2 thanks to Son
and Janssen respectively. Wycombe thought they had pulled off a massive cupset as
Gary Thompson Scored a header in the 88th minute but in the end Son and Alli proved
there premier league quality against the League 2 side. Lots has changed since that
fixture in 2017. First of all Wycombe have been extremely successful and climbed up
to the Second tier of English Football meanwhile spurs have been the same old spurs
and haven’t had any success other than making it the Champions League final in
2019. The major difference between this fixture and the one back in 2017 is the
Coronavirus outbreak, this will have a major effect on Wycombe as Adams Park will
have been sold out and the fans would be behind them wanting revenge from 2017,
instead the game is being played behind closed doors and the atmosphere will be non-
existent. Another COVID related issue is the fact that there has been a coronavirus
outbreak in the Wycombe camp, according to some news sources Tottenham might
recive a bye as the game might not be able to go ahead. I think this is nonsense as
Shrewsbury have had an outbreak but yet they have been allowed to play there cup tie
against Southampton so it can’t be one rule for one and one for another. Now lets look
at the two teams.
Wycombe:
Wycombe have currently got a coronavirus outbreak in there camp. This caused last
weekends game against QPR to be postponed so there is some doubt if the fixture will go
ahead but if it does I’m expecting them to play a strong team against the premier league
team. Wycombe’s form has been poor recently only finding 2 wins in the last 14 games.
But in the cup they blew Preston North End out of the park with a 4-1 victory and will be
going into this game with hope and optimism I’m expecting the best team they can play
for this fixture, its hard to know whos not going to be available as we don’t know who
has contracted the virus but this is the team I would expect them to field: I would Ryan
Allsop to start in goal and Joe Jacobson at left back, I think he could cause Tottenham a
few problems with his corners and free kicks. I would expect to see Antony Stewart and
Darius Charles in the centre back positions. Jason McCarthy should be starting at right
back and his pace on the wing could cause the Tottenham midfield some problems with
his pace. I would expect to see the general Matt Bloomfield commanding the Midfield
with Mhmeti on the right mid and Wheeler on the left. I would expect to see Scotty
Kashket on the right wing and he can use his explosive pace to work down the wing and
with Akinfenwa upfront using his hold up play they could make a dangerous duo. I don’t
know wether Gareth Ainsworth will choose Onyedinma or Daryl Horgan but they are
both quality players and will cause the Tottenham defence a few problems. For me as a
fan its very disappointing that this match will not feauture on free to watch television, I
understand BT sport have the right to show some FA cup games as obviously they have
paid for that franchise. But I believe with there being no fans allowed into the ground to
watch this huge tie I think this should have gone to the BBC so everybody can enjoy the
game
Tottenham
Tottenham are going into this with no significant injuries but I do not expect a very
strong side to be fielded as Tottenham have a history of not fielding strong sides in
cup competitions, I think Wycombe can capitalise on this like they did last time. I’m
expecting them to field a slightly stronger side than the team they fielded in there
5-0 victory over Marine. I’m expecting Joe Hart in goal the Welshman Ben Davies in
left back and Matt Doherty in right back. This should provide a strong enough
defence to stop Wycombe really troubling them. I would expect Harry Winks and
Moussa Sissoko in the midfield. Lucas Moura should start on the Right Wing as he
can use his pace to catch Joe Jacobson off guard on the counter. I would expect Son
on the right as he proved how deadly he can be against Wycombe back in 2017. I can
see Delle Alli starting as CAM and Carlos Vinícius starting up front looking to add to
his goal tally in the cup after scoring a hat-trick against Marine.
Roundup:
I think as much as I would love Wycombe to win this match I would expect Tottenham to
win this game. As for the score I reckon it will actually be pretty close maybe 2-1 or 3-2 to
Tottenham. It should be an exciting game to watch.
