AWWA Standard
This document is an American Water Works Association (AWWA) standard. It is not a specification.
AWWA standards describe minimum requirements and do not contain all of the engineering and
administrative information normally contained in specifications. The AWWA standards usually con-
tain options that must be evaluated by the user of the standard. Until each optional feature is
specified by the user, the product or service is not fully defined. AWWA publication of a standard
does not constitute endorsement of any product or product type, nor does AWWA test, certify, or
approve any product. The use of AWWA standards is entirely voluntary. AWWA standards are
intended to represent a consensus of the water supply industry that the product described will
provide satisfactory service. When AWWA revises or withdraws this standard, an official notice of
action will be placed on the first page of the classified advertising section of Journal AWWA. The
action becomes effective on the first day of the month following the month of Journal AWWA publi-
cation of the official notice.

American National Standard

An American National Standard implies a consensus of those substantially concerned with its scope
and provisions. An American National Standard is intended as a guide to aid the manufacturer, the
consumer, and the general public. The existence of an American National Standard does not in any
respect preclude anyone, whether he has approved the standard or not, from manufacturing, mar-
keting, purchasing, or using products, processes, or procedures not conforming to the standard.
American National Standards are subject to periodic review, and users are cautioned to obtain the
latest editions. Producers of goods made in conformity with an American National Standard are
encouraged to state on their own responsibility in advertising and promotional materials or on tags
or labels that the goods are produced in conformity with particular American National Standards.

CAUTION NOTICE: The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approval date on the front
cover of this standard indicates completion of the ANSI approval process. This American National
Standard may be revised or withdrawn at any time. ANSI procedures require that action be taken
to reaffirm, revise, or withdraw this standard no later than five years from the date of publication.
Purchasers of American National Standards may receive current information on all standards by
calling or writing the American National Standards Institute, Inc., 11 West 42nd St., New York,

Foreword
This foreword is for information only and is not part of AWWA C800.

I. History of Standard. In 1929, the development of a standard for threads

for underground service fittings was undertaken by the American Standards
Association (ASA). In 1932, the subcommittee that had been appointed for the task
asked to be discharged after it had submitted its proposed standards in the form of
two drawings. No action was taken by ASA on these proposed standards.
The American Water Works Association (AWWA) recognized the need for
standardization of such threads and appointed a committee in 1940 to prepare a
standard. The New England Water Works Association (NEWWA) also appointed a
committee to prepare a standard for such threads. The AWWA and NEWWA com-
mittees cooperated closely in developing a tentative standard in 1947. This was
approved as a standard by AWWA on Sept. 1, 1948, and by NEWWA on Sept. 14,
1948. Revisions to the standard were made effective Jan. 17, 1955. In July 1963, a
committee was formed to revise C800-55 with regard to the evaluation of types K
and L copper tubing for water services. In the revision, published in 1966, threads
that represented current practice were set up for those fittings generally used in the
water utility field. Sizes 1⁄2 in. and 5⁄8 in. were added for inlet and outlet threads for
fittings and couplings, for use with flared copper service tubing. The 1966 revision
introduced an appendix that was not part of the standard, but which listed stan-
dards for water service line materials. The appendix was provided for information
only since the materials were covered by other standards. The appendix also con-
tained specifications for copper water tubing, red brass pipe, cast-iron pipe, and
steel pipe.
In 1974, a standing committee was formed to revise and update C800-66. The
committee recognized the need to expand the scope of this standard beyond being a
standard covering only threads for underground service fittings. All previous ver-
sions of C800 covered only the threads for fittings that were in common use in water
distribution systems. Subsequently, the scope of the standard was changed to
include performance standards for underground service line fittings as well as for
the threads. The 1984 revision to C800 was approved by the AWWA Board of Direc-
tors on Jan. 29, 1984.
The next revision of this standard may address requirements for tapping
saddles.
II. Lead Fittings. All references to lead fittings have been removed from this
edition of C800 and the attached appendices. The AWWA Standards Department
has available to users of C800, copies of C800-84 information that contains refer-
ences to lead fittings.
III. Information Regarding Use of This Standard. This standard includes
minimum performance standards not only for threads, but also for fittings. The fol-
lowing summarizes the items the purchaser should cover in the supplementary
specifications and lists the sections where they may be found.
1. Standard used—that is, AWWA C800-89, Standard for Underground Service
Line Valves and Fittings.
2. The size and type of fitting or valve.

AWWA STANDARD FOR

UNDERGROUND SERVICE LINE

VALVES AND FITTINGS

SECTION 1: GENERAL
Sec. 1.1 Scope
This standard covers valves and fittings in sizes 1⁄2 in. (12.7 mm) through 2 in.
(50.8 mm) for use in the buried service line from the main to the meter valve or
meter setting appurtenance. Valves include corporation and curb valves. Fittings
include various types of couplings and adapters. This standard sets forth the mini-
mum capabilities, characteristics, and properties that a service line valve or fitting
must possess at the time of manufacture. Details of design and manufacture, other
than those stated in this standard, including such design and production tests as
will ensure that each valve or fitting will have the capabilities to the required
degree, remain the responsibility of the manufacturer.
1.1.1 Installation. The performance of products depends on proper installa-
tion. The purchaser must follow instructions supplied by or available from the
manufacturer. If these instructions are not available, good installation practices
shall be followed.
1.1.2 Exception. All references to lead fittings have been removed from this
standard. The 1986 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) prohibit
the use of lead pipe and fittings in service line applications. The 1986 SDWA
amendments also limit alloys used to produce service line components to a maxi-
mum 8 percent lead. The 1986 SDWA amendments also limit the lead content of
solders and flux used to join components to no more than 0.2 percent lead.

Sec. 1.2 Definitions

In this standard, the following definitions shall apply:
1.2.1 Adapter: A fitting used to connect pipe, tubing, or other fittings with
differing characteristics such as sizes, diameters, or material type.
1.2.2 Chamfer: A bevel made on the end of a thread to facilitate thread en-
gagement.
1.2.3 Corporation valve: A valve attached to the water main to start a service
connection, which is used to interrupt flow during installation or maintenance of the
service line. This valve is frequently installed while the main is under pressure.
1.2.4 Coupling: A fitting for connecting two pipe or tubing sections together.
1.2.5 Curb valve: A valve installed in the water service line and accessible for
operation from the surface of the ground for routinely interrupting flow through the
service line.
1.2.6 Driving thread: A thread installed on the outlet end of corporation
valves and used to hold the valve during installation.
1.2.7 Dryseal: A type of pipe thread covered by ANSI/ASME B1.20.3. Dryseal
pipe threads are based on the USA (American) pipe thread; however, they differ
from the USA (American) pipe thread in that they are designed to seal pressure-
tight joints without the need for sealing compounds.
1.2.8 Fitting: A part used to connect piping or tubing.
1.2.9 Inlet: The opening in a valve or fitting through which flow from the
water main enters the valve or fitting.
1.2.10 Manufacturer: The party that produces the products covered by this
standard.
1.2.11 N.P.T.: National Pipe Thread as specified in ANSI/ASME B1.20.1.
1.2.12 Outlet: The opening in a valve or fitting through which flow from the
water main leaves the valve or fitting.
1.2.13 Purchaser: The party entering into a contract or agreement for the pur-
chase of any materials or work to be performed in accordance with the provisions of
this standard.
1.2.14 Service line check valve: A check valve used to minimize backflow and
reduce the potential for contamination of water in the main line if pressure in the
main is reduced or customer pressure is increased.
1.2.15 Service saddle: A fitting that attaches circumferentially to a pipe to
provide for attachment of a corporation valve.

APPENDIX B
Field Testing

This appendix is for information only and is not a part of AWWA C800.

Should purchasers choose to conduct field tests, the following recommendations

from ANSI/AWWA C800-84, Sec. 6.2.2, are available here for general information.
Field tests. Field tests by the purchaser shall be in accordance with the pres-
sures specified in Sec. 3.2 or Sec. 3.3 as appropriate. External leakage through the
valve body is not allowed. The corporation outlet may be capped to eliminate leak-
age through the closed valve’s port opening.
If higher test pressures, not to exceed 150 percent of the pressure rating, are
required, it is recommended that corporation valves be capped and tested in the
open position.
When testing a water main, if capping the corporation valve is impractical, the
recommended alternative is to test to the curb valve with the corporation valve
open.
It is recommended that pressure testing of service lines be done before backfill-
ing to detect and facilitate the repair of any leaks at the joint or from the pipe,
valves, or fittings.
