AWWA Standard
This document is an American Water Works Association (AWWA) standard. It is not a specification.
AWWA standards describe minimum requirements and do not contain all of the engineering and
administrative information normally contained in specifications. The AWWA standards usually con-
tain options that must be evaluated by the user of the standard. Until each optional feature is
specified by the user, the product or service is not fully defined. AWWA publication of a standard
does not constitute endorsement of any product or product type, nor does AWWA test, certify, or
approve any product. The use of AWWA standards is entirely voluntary. AWWA standards are
intended to represent a consensus of the water supply industry that the product described will
provide satisfactory service. When AWWA revises or withdraws this standard, an official notice of
action will be placed on the first page of the classified advertising section of Journal AWWA. The
action becomes effective on the first day of the month following the month of Journal AWWA publi-
cation of the official notice.
CAUTION NOTICE: The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approval date on the front
cover of this standard indicates completion of the ANSI approval process. This American National
Standard may be revised or withdrawn at any time. ANSI procedures require that action be taken
to reaffirm, revise, or withdraw this standard no later than five years from the date of publication.
Purchasers of American National Standards may receive current information on all standards by
calling or writing the American National Standards Institute, Inc., 11 West 42nd St., New York,
NY 10036; (212) 642-4900.

(Revision of ANSI/AWWA C800-84)
SECTION 1: GENERAL
Sec. 1.1 Scope
This standard covers valves and fittings in sizes 1⁄2 in. (12.7 mm) through 2 in.
(50.8 mm) for use in the buried service line from the main to the meter valve or
meter setting appurtenance. Valves include corporation and curb valves. Fittings
include various types of couplings and adapters. This standard sets forth the mini-
mum capabilities, characteristics, and properties that a service line valve or fitting
must possess at the time of manufacture. Details of design and manufacture, other
than those stated in this standard, including such design and production tests as
will ensure that each valve or fitting will have the capabilities to the required
degree, remain the responsibility of the manufacturer.
1.1.1 Installation. The performance of products depends on proper installa-
tion. The purchaser must follow instructions supplied by or available from the
manufacturer. If these instructions are not available, good installation practices
shall be followed.
1.1.2 Exception. All references to lead fittings have been removed from this
standard. The 1986 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) prohibit
the use of lead pipe and fittings in service line applications. The 1986 SDWA
amendments also limit alloys used to produce service line components to a maxi-
mum 8 percent lead. The 1986 SDWA amendments also limit the lead content of
solders and flux used to join components to no more than 0.2 percent lead.

SECTION 2: MATERIALS
Sec. 2.1 Castings
Materials in contact with potable water shall be made from copper alloy
no. C83600, in accordance with the chemical and mechanical requirements of ASTM
B62 or ASTM B584. This alloy contains nominally 85 percent copper and 5 percent
each tin, lead, and zinc.
Sec. 2.2 Component Parts
Component parts such as fasteners, seals, and packing may be of other materi-
als selected for adequate endurance, corrosion resistance, and strength.

configuration of the main. The service saddle shall be designed to provide a drip-
tight connection when used as a service connection to the main.*
Sec. 4.4 Service Line Fittings
The fittings used in service lines shall be designed for connection to the service
line by threads, brazing, compression, and/or flaring. Small waterways and abrupt
corners causing water turbulence and pressure drop should be minimized.
4.4.1 Solder for service line fittings. When solder is used with fittings, it shall
be “lead free” with a maximum lead content of no more than 0.2 percent as defined
in the 1986 amendments to the SDWA.
*The materials used to produce service saddles are not limited to the cast copper alloys
listed in Sec. 2.
