ACTIVITY
1. Nature versus Nurture: which has a more significant influence on human development?
Nature or nurture?
- According to our understanding and we cope up that nurture has a greater effect in
influencing human development. It is well known that in a lot of traits such as body
weight and growth it has a result of an organism genetic that make up and the influence
of environmental factors. Nurture is generally taken as an influence of external factors
after conception which is the product of exposure , life experiences and learning
individual which can affect the human development of a person.

2. Continuity versus discontinuity: does development involve gradual cumulative change or

distinct changes discontinuity? Is our development
- We think that discontinuity is more specific about the human development. It is
based on the changes of a person that can produce different behaviors in different age
specific life periods called stages. A person will have a lot of physical changes wheather
internal or external by stage of development.
3. Stability versus change:

- As we understand the human development best described as stability why?

Because the development of a person can affect by the influence of other people
through interaction with family , friends, experiences at school and acculturation has a
big impact in development of a person

ANALYSIS
1. Who are pre-nurture? Are there additional reasons you can give in favor of
nature/nurture? Who are neither for nature nor nurture? Why?
 The young ones, for us nurture is much needed by a child rather than natures,
nurturing emotional relationships are the most crucial primary foundation for both
intellectual and social growth. At the most basic level, relationships foster warmth,
intimacy, and pleasure; furnish security, physical safety, and protection from illness
and injury; and supply basic needs for nutrition and housing. When there are
secure, empathetic, nurturing relationships, children learn to be intimate and
empathetic, and eventually to communicate their feelings, reflect on their own
wishes, and develop their own relationships.
2. Who go for continuity and discontinuity? Can you give additional arguments to defend
continuity/discontinuity? Who are in between continuity and discontinuity? Why?
 For us it is still on children, Discontinuity is very realistic than continuity because a
person can’t actually improve perfectly rather, we improved because of ups and
downs that we’ve experienced along the way. Moreover, there is no such straight
road for improvements.
3. Who claims stability is more correct than change? Change is more correct than stability?
 For us, change is more correct than stability because change means improvements
and there are no stable things here in this world, everything changed, same with a
person, by the changes occurred in this world humans also forced to change and to
improve them for survival.

APPLICATION
Let’s find out where you can apply what you learned from a discussion of these
developmental issues.
1. Convinced of the interactive influence or heredity and environment on the development
of children, prepare for a power point presentation for parents to show them how crucial
their role is in the development of their children. Remember that heredity is already fixed.
Their children have been born and they have passed on these inherited traits at conception
and that they cannot do anything anymore to change them. So concentrate on how they
can contribute to their children’s favorable development by creating the environment by
creating the environment conductive to development. Like heredity, environment is
complex. It includes nutrition as early as conception, parenting, family dynamics,
schooling, neighborhood quality and biological encounters such as viruses, birth
complications, and even biological events in cells.
Do not lose sight of the objective of your presentation. At the end of your presentation, the
parents should go home very much convinced for their role in the development of their
children and get very much inspired to do their part.
2. Do the same presentation (in # 1) to a class in General Psychology where they discuss the
nature-nurture debate or to a group of student teachers.
3. Discuss the implications of this statement:
“The frightening part about heredity and environment is that we, parents, provide both.”
 Parents didn’t start after you bear a child but even before or during pregnancy.
And a job of parents actually really hard. Like, a mother should be given an
intensive care for the development of the child and same with the father. But most of
all intensive parenting must not end after bearing a child, they must also secure the
child from their environment, Because this is also the primary aspect that influence
the improvement of a child.

4. Here is an interesting article titled “How the first nine months Shape the Rest of your
life” from the October 4, 2010. Issue of the time magazine. Read, analyze then answer
the following questions:
● Does the article agree that heredity, environment and individual’s choice are the
factors that contribute to what a person may a become? Read the paragraph that
tells so.
Yes, The kind and quantity of nutrition you received in the womb; the pollutants,
drugs and infections you were exposed to during gestation; your mother’s health,
stress level and state of mind while she was pregnant with you — all these factors
shaped you as a baby and a child and continue to affect you to this day.
● Read the 4th paragraph again. Focus your attention on the highlighted word,
PERMANENTLY. Relate this to the issue on stability versus change issue on p.
46. Does the word PERMANENTLY convince you that we are what our first
experiences have made of us stability? Explain your answer.
● Still, humans are being mold because of change, you can say that we are
stable in our internal structures but the range our minds cannot be measure
and changes drives us to our improvements

Complete the sentence.

1. With regard to the nurture-nature, continuity-discontinuity and change-stability
controversies, the wiser stand is
 Both nature and nurture, continuity and discontinuity, stability and change
characterize our life-span development. The key to development is the
interaction of nature and nurture rather than either factor alone (Rutter,
2001 as quoted by Santrock, 2002).
 “both-and” not “either-or.
As far as our discussions are concerned, which statement is correct and which one is wrong?
Put a check before the correct statement and mark the wrong one. If you mark a statement,
explain why.
 I marked the statement “both-and not either-or”. Because as from our point of
view, we weren’t sure about how huge the impact of these variables can give to a
developing child. Moreover we also already discussed about how differ a person
from others depending to the experiences that he/she have. Hence, there will be
always who will dominate in term of contributions especially in a developing
child.
1. Heredity exerts a greater influence on human development than environment.

 For us, environment had an enormous impact to human development than

heredity, According to Matei (2017), Environment shapes us unconsciously in
more ways than we care to admit. Humans are profoundly social beings and as a
result, most of us are constantly surrounded by people and desire social
acceptance. For example, one of the most powerful influences of the environment
on the person is that it is the cultural environment that determines what a person
in that culture is. The environment varies with culture and history and impacts
the person that gets in contact with it. We learn to engage in childhood while
interacting with our social reality and then is when we learn that we have to
follow conventions for social interactions. And because we are social beings we are
highly influenced by those we surround ourselves with. Not only that, but we are
also influenced by the natural environment that surrounds us. Everything
influences our way of thinking and our opinions: the climate influences our
mood, the pollution influences our health, and the natural resources might affect
human survival.

2. What has been experienced in the earlier stages of development can no longer be
changed.
 For us teachers, we think that knowledge or learning are the things that might
hard to change or can’t even change anymore. Because according to our prof
elementary stage is where a child mold their perspective in life together with the
guidance of knowledge that being impart by the teacher. Hence , once a teacher
have imparted a wrong information to his/her class it would cause struggle to the
students that’s why as much as possible let’s try harder to disseminate right and
précised information.
3. From the perspective of life-span develomentalist, later experiences are the key
determinants of a person’s development.
 For us, Experiences are not the determinant rather it is the driver in order for a
person to improve. In addition, By the help of our experiences it enable us to
step up and create a new directions towards improvements

How are the findings of this research useful to teachers?

Being a teacher it is also our responsibility to understand our students state in life it
also our job to secure the safeness of each and every child in our class. Our job is to give
them knowledge, and this study thought me that not all children are being cared equally.
Sometimes socio economic status also affects the development of a child and as a teacher
it’s my job to secure his/her knowledge.

REFLECTION
1. Relate what you learned here to your personal development. What has helped you
become the person that you are now? Is what you have become a product of the mere
interaction of heredity and environment? Or is what you have become a product of
both heredity and environment interacting and what you have decide or determined
yourself to become? (Self-determination or freedom is a third factor). Write your
reflections.
For me, both have an effect on what I am today especially in a sense that
both factors build my personality and capabilities, actually there’s neither mere
less important from these two nor a matter of equity. Because on the bright side
these two factors had given us the opportunity to improve, to find ourselves, it is
depending on how we take the scenarios to our life, or how we value everything
that come along on our way.
However, I was already at this point where I was fully decided to what future
self I want to be and that is because of my experiences and my family who build
and created me as person. In addition, I was in a lot of struggles in life and still
facing it today but one thing I’ve always realize , that despite of my
imperfections still I continue to treasure things regardless of my limits and that
is because I know where/ what direction I’m heading to.
Hence, I was living as student today but I’m sure that I’m going to be a
teacher someday with acknowledging my experiences , my environment and
heredity but above all this things there’s one thing I’m sure that ‘m heading to
my dreams.
