SIKKIM OVERVIEW:

Sikkim has been given many names:- Nye-mae-el `paradise‘, Su Khim or `new
house' while to the Bhutias it was Beymul Demazong `the hidden valley of
rice'.

•Objective of tourism activities are Enjoy, Pleasure, Refreshment etc. without
having any financial and business motive.
the state whole of Sikkim (Himalaya) is a big attraction both for domestic and
foreign tourist. Lover of Himalaya, seekers of knowledge, naturalists and
scientists, tourists and pilgrims flock to matchless region of Sikkim Himalaya.
Sikkim Tourism divided into four district:-
- North District
- East District
- West District
- South District
NORTH DISTRICT
•Mangan- 67 kilometres from Gangtok, A three day Bands, music festival, is
held at Mangan in December every year. Mountains, music and the cold
weather create an enthralling event.
•Gurudongmar Lake- Situated at a height of 17,800 feet, it is considered
one the most sacred lakes by the Buddhists and Hindus alike.
•Lachung- The picturesque mountain village of Lachung, at a height of 8610
ft, embraced by snow capped mountain peaks, breathtaking waterfalls,
sparkling streams and apple orchards is the perfect holiday destination.
•Yumthang- situated at a height of 11800 feet is popularly known as 'Valley of
Flowers', it is a paradise for nature lovers with a fascinating blend of flora and
fauna and breathtaking scenic beauty. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary
over here has 24 species of Rhododendron flowers which bloom from April to
May end.
•Some other Destinations are:- Chungthang, Singhik, Phodong, Kabi and
Dzongu.
EAST DISTRICT

•Gangtok- the capital city of Sikkim is located on a ridge at a height of 5500


feet. With a spectacular view of the Khangchendzonga, the town provides the
perfect base for travel through the state, Hotels, Shopping complexes, cyber
cafes, night clubs, Titanic Park etc.
•Tsomgo (Changu) Lake- 38 km from Gangtok and at an altitude of 12,400 ft,
the ethereally beautiful Tsomgo lake is a must on every visitors itinerary.
•Nathula- Located around 56 kms from Gangtok at an altitude of 14450 ft, the
road to Nathula passes through the Tsomgo lake. It is one of the highest
motorable roads in the world and is richly surrounded by alpine flora. Nathula
is open for Indian nationals. Foreign nationals are not allowed to visit
Nathula. Photography is strictly prohibited.
•Other destinations are:- Aritar, Rumtek, Banjhakri fall, Khangchendzonga
etc.
WEST DISTRICT

•Soreng- Surrounded by lush green hills. The area is famous for the wide
variety of flowers and birds available here. A trip to Jhandi Danra is highly
recommended for nature lovers. Soreng is one of the three gateways to the
Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary.
•Tashiding- Tashiding is a small village on a hilltop near Pelling. There are a
large number of oranges orchards and cardamoms plantations around
Tashiding which can be visited from here.
•Gyalshing- Gyalshing bazaar is the longest and believed to be the holiest,
Mendang or Holy Wall, constructed by the third king, Chogyal Chador
Namgyal.
•Pelling- Pelling’s serene environment and picturesque setting is perfect for
nice nature walks and small treks. A destination for all seasons, Pelling has
hotels and resorts catering to all budgets.
•Others destinations are:- Varsey, Dentam, Sambaria, Legship, Uttarey etc.
SOUTH DISTRICT

•Namchi- Namchi offers an unmatched view of the Khangchendzonga range


and the Rangit valley. can visit the Sherdup Choeling Monastery and the
Dichen Choeling monastery, Namchi hosts the very popular Namchi
Mahotsav, a Tourism, Culture and Food Festival, every year in October.
•Samdrupste- A unique, awe inspiring and gigangtic 135 feet high statue of
Guru Padamasambhava is installed atop Sampruptse. It is the highest statue
of Guru Padamasambhava in the world.
•Buddha Park (Sakyamuni Project), Rabong- the people of Rabong to
construct and install a statue of Lord Buddha at Rabong ,to commemorate the
2550th year, and also to develop the Buddhist Circuit in Sikkim.
•Solophok Chardham- This unique Pilgrim Centre has a main temple of 108
feet height on which is based the 87 feet high statue of Lord Shiva on the
sitting posture at the Solophok Hill. Apart from Shiva statue, this Pilgrim
Centre also has replicas of the twelve Jyotirlingas, to offer one platform for
Shiva devotees.
ADVENTURE AND SPORTS:
•Trekking- The state’s vast unspoiled mountain ranges are a trekker’s delight
and its amazing range of flora and fauna a naturalist’s dream.
•River Rafting- river rafting on the Teesta can be the most adrenaline
pumping adventure ever.
•Mountain Biking- Mountain Biking is another adventure that has been
recently introduced in Sikkim and the state is fast becoming a favourite
destination for mountain bikers.
•Yak Riding- Colourfully decorated Yaks with woolen knitwear over the horns
and forehead and strings of bells around the necks are ready to take you for a
ride around the lake or go up the mountain.
•Parks and Sanctuaries- the Khangchendzonga National Park is the largest
wildlife reserve in Sikkim. The reserve is home to the snow leopard,
Himalayan black bear, Tibetan antelope, wild ass, barking deer, musk deer,
flying squirrel and the red panda who live in blissful isolation amongst giant
magnolias, rhododendrons and pine forests.

Foreign tourists’ inflow recorded highest in the month of October 2011 to


4286. Infact it is the highest recorded during the past 7 years in Sikkim.
