FITNESS AEROBICS

-- Characteristics, Classification, Advantages --

During the last decade, Fitness Aerobics has become more and more popular in
our country. This physical activity it’s close to become, day by day, a social
phenomenon. The reason for its growing popularity is due to the following facts: on the
one hand its inner qualities and on the other hand its presence on several TV shows,
books, magazines, video recordings, sites on internet, etc. This situation leads us to the
following firm conclusion: society, through its exponents (the human beings), wants that
people practice it. In order to accomplish this society’s imperative demand and, knowing
that its theoretical field is away of being completed, I have decided to try, in a rather
timid manner, and put forward some new ideas regarding that theme.

Characteristics
The characteristics synthesized down below belong to Aerobics as a school and a
private activity, too.
Main characteristics are:
Accessibility: due to numerous ways of practice, and variety of exercises, Aerobics
activity could be practiced by every willing person regardless of age,
sex, the functioning of locomotion system, the existence of some
inadequate body alignments, level of physical fitness and specific skill,
body’s individual type of response to the delivered effort, the individual
goals.
Adaptability: the variety of types of Fitness Aerobics and the numerous specific steps
and moves offer to all Aerobics enthusiasts the opportunity for choosing
the proper exercises or routine programs adapted to specific needs, level
of Fitness, activity of main internal systems and organs and personal
goals.
Dynamics: technical content of exercises, methods of learning and scientific
terminology are being permanently transformed and up-dated.
Analytics and/or General: refers to the possibilities of training all main muscle groups,
joints and ligaments at the same time or one group at the time, relying on
the variables presented above.
Health State: derives from the primordial purpose of improving or maintaining health,
raising the body endurance to different illness, adjusting the activity of
inner body organs, etc.

Fitness Aerobics — Classification

The outstanding popularity of Aerobics leaded to a wide world spreading of it.
Due to that fact, Fitness Aerobics recorded very large and diversified types. This
process is far from being completed; moreover, we may say that process is a “live” one,
always submitted to changes.
In the following lines I will try to up date the older classifications of Aerobics’
types and to complete them with new types. Thus, all the Fitness Aerobics’ variants
present on the market nowadays are:

6
I. According to the level of physical effort impact over the body
1.LOW IMPACT AEROBICS — march, simple and easy moves of arms and legs.
2.MODERATE IMPACT AEROBICS — skip, toe raises, light vertical jumps
accompanied by various actions of body, arms and legs with an intensity situated between
low and high.
3.HIGH IMPACT AEROBICS — step Aerobics, slide training, jogging on the spot.
4.MAXIMUM IMPACT AEROBICS — march and jogging with weights, all kinds
of jumps and jacks.

II. According to the way of practice

1.NON-STOP TRAINING — uses LOW and MODERATE IMPACT AEROBICS
exercises, without break, for different periods of time relying on the physical Fitness
level of practitioners.
2.INTERVAL TRAINING — combines high intensity exercises (such as jogging on
the spot with various arm and leg moves, jumping jacks, etc.) with active break (weight
lifting, stretching).
3.HI-LO AEROBICS — it’s a sequence in teaching combining, usually, 3 or more
lower impact moves with 1 high impact move.

III. Depending on the kind of barbells, weight machines or apparatus in use

1.CHAIR AEROBICS—it is Aerobics done by sitting on or standing by the chair.
The chair Aerobics moves for upper body simulate the types of moves people do in a
weight room with resistance apparatus; the moves for lower body include march, jog,
hop, step touch, knee lift and so on.
2.STEP AEROBICS—it is a low impact activity of varied intensity that involves
stepping onto or off a step product, bench, or stool.
3.SLIDE TRAINING— is a high intensity lateral training that resembles sliding
across some newly waxed surface. It uses a slide board that presents angled, rubberized
bumpers on either end of a slippery plastic material or slide boots or socks worn over
your supportive shoes. The techniques used in this section consist in sliding moves from
side to side, towards three main directions: forward-backward, frontal and diagonal.
4.POWER WORKOUT—it is an ordinary Aerobics routine that uses lightweights,
heavy belts or elastic strings.

IV. Depending on the state of health and physical capabilities

1.IZOMETRICS—it consists of a set of exercises that go in line with the principles
that bear the same name.
2.CALLANETICS—it is a combination of motionless and dynamic moves that
present a low level of amplitude.
3.AQUAROBICS—it consists of a set of exercises performed under partial
immersion, with or without floating.
4.HEALING AEROBICS— it deals with Motor-Therapy techniques performed
within a program of Aerobics.

IV. Depending on the type of exercises

1.exercises specific to Aerobics.

7
2.exercises borrowed from other sports, which have been adapted specifically for
Aerobics:
• Latino dances (Latino Aerobics);
• Traditional dances from different cultures (Country Aerobics, Ethno Aerobics, etc.);
• Martial Arts (Kung-Fu Aerobics), Boxing (Tai-Bo);
• Athletics (Athletics Aerobics);
• Team games.

Aerobics - the best way of living fit

In the following lines I tried to systemize the main advantages of practicing

Aerobics. These advantages belong to Aerobics as a school activity and, at the same time,
as a private fitness activity performed during people’s spare time.

I. Methodic Advantages
 It solves, simultaneously, the goals relating to preparing the entire body to get
through the in-coming physical effort.
 It solves fast, safely and efficiently the goals related to the process of individual
harmonious growing-up and also related to the optimization of individual fitness
capacity.
 It educates, simultaneously, two or more physical qualities by means of a specific
learning technology.
 It presents a high level of exercise program’s adaptability depending on:
 the way of organizing the group of students to work with: in one large
group, in smaller groups, in pairs or individual.
 every student’s level of physical readiness, specific skill, body’s
individual response to the delivered effort, some inadequate body posture and
alignments.
 the content of the main theme of the lesson (it assures the use of the
learning principle “positive transfer” from one part of the lesson to another).
 It permits to workout only the desired muscle area or segment.

II. Health State Advantages and Effort Alterations

 On short term - Aerobics determines, in very short time and in a safe and real
way, the following immediate alterations: the raising of heart rate and systolic flow to
optimum values; the raising of the blood flow and intelligent delivery of it, etc.
 On long term – Aerobics determines the following alteration:
 It improves the aerobic endurance capacity.
 It gains and maintains a high muscular tonus and strength.
 It raises the efficiency of heart’s activity while the people rest or practice
and improves the function of cardio-circulator system.
 It improves the gas exchanges at the level of lungs and tissues.
 It improves the flexibility.
 On the one hand it modifies the proportion between the muscles, bones
and vital liquids and the other hand the fat tissues, and all these for the benefit of
the first one’s.

8
 It raises the body resistance to illness.
 It’s good for a total or partial correction of the body’s posture and
alignments.

III. Aesthetical, psychophysical and social advantages

 It educates the rhythm and the coordination of the moves and the
techniques performed with one segment or with the entire body.
 It stimulates the specific thinking and memory.
 It discovers and determines artistic skills, such as the musically
and choreographically performed ones.
 The exercise programs present a high level of adaptability to any
kind of needs or goals, being constantly up-dated to the latest trends regarding the
music and the choreography performed.
 The aerobics workouts combine the necessity of doing exercises
with the pleasure of spending a great time and having fun. It’s a common saying
related to the previous statement that goes like this “Aerobics is more like a fun-out
activity than a workout”.
 It makes the contribution to integrate the people with a special
status in society, such as: people with locomotion handicap, people with weight
problems, people who suffer of anxiety or people who have communication problems
when talking to other people.
