ran codes and cleaned oil from car engine and transmission, just purchased vehicle
yesterday

According to the book, it is "Shift Solenoid 3 circuit failure". It is not necessarily a bad
part, it could just be a broken wire. Some testing is necessary to get it fixed without
accidentally replacing a good part. A wiring diagram showing the entire Shift Solenoid
circuit will be needed to see all the wiring colors and then you can use a multimeter to
do some simple checks. The solenoid is located inside the transmission, and it controls a
valve that controls flow of transmission fluid to shift gears. The wiring comes out of the
transmission and goes to the computer. The code can set because of a problem
anywhere along the circuit, including inside and outside the transmission. So start by
locating the bundle of wires that leads out of the transmission and follow it to the
computer, looking for obvious faults like a broken wire. Testing will become more
focused as you work to isolate the problem to the wiring, or the portion inside the trans
(the testing can be done at a connector outside the transmission, so you don't have to
open the trans just for testing the wiring and solenoid inside).

It is helpful, but not very detailed on the replacement of the solenoid in question. It is
good to have as a resource though. There are some schematics in the Autozone manual:

Unfortunately the Autozone schematics do not cover everything, mainly just the engine
and important safety systems like lighting. If you need the factory manuals, they are

I looked through my own factory manual and found this schematic showing the circuit
identified by code 641.

Solenoid 3 is controlled by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) on pin 53. The PCM
powers pin 53 to actuate Shift Solenoid 3. The wire to carefully check is circuit 852,
which is Orange/Green stripe, and the Blue/Red stripe wire that it connects to in
connector C123.

The solenoid itself is located just inside the transmission pan, attached to the valve
body, which is removed from the trans in order to replace the solenoid assembly. So the
job is not really too bad on disassembly. It is just a bit more involved than a
transmission fluid change where the pan is removed to drain the fluid.

The valve body is number 10 in the picture. This is the 4EAT transmission shown,
which should match the unit in your car.

Main Control Valve Body

The main control valve body (7A100) is mounted on the bottom of the transaxle. It can
be removed without removing the transaxle. The main control valve body consists of
four subsections:

 Upper control valve body.


 Main control valve body.
 Premain control valve body.
 Lower control valve body.

The bolts which join these subsections together are letter-coded according to length.
These letter designators are located on the bolt heads.

The bolts that attach the main control valve body to the transaxle also have different
lengths.

Shift Solenoid (SS) Assembly

Removal

1. Remove the main control valve body (7A100). Refer to the procedure in this
section (below).

1. Remove the bolts securing the shift and TCC solenoids to the main control valve
body.

1. Remove the shift and TCC solenoids, as necessary.


4. Remove the strainers located in the solenoid ports.
Installation

1. Install the strainers into the solenoid ports.

1. Position the solenoids into the main control valve body and secure with bolts.
Tighten the shift solenoid bolts and the TCC solenoid bolt to 7.8-11 Nm (69-95
lb-in).

1. Install the main control valve body. Refer to the procedure in this section.
Tighten the valve body bolts to 7.8-11 Nm (69-95 lb-in).

Main Control Valve Body

WARNING: AVOID SPILLING TRANSAXLE FLUID. THE FLUID MAY


BE HOT.

Removal

1. Raise and support the vehicle.

1. Place a suitable container beneath the transmission fluid pan (7A194).

1. Remove all the bolts securing the transmission fluid pan except the four corner
bolts.

1. Remove two of the remaining four oil pan bolts from the rear of the automatic
transaxle and allow the fluid to drain into the container.

1. Remove the last two bolts securing the transmission fluid pan.

1. Remove the transmission fluid pan and oil pan to case gasket (7A191). Discard
the oil pan to case gasket.
2. Remove the bolts securing the wiring clips to the main control valve body
(7A100).

1. Disconnect the wiring connectors.

1. Remove the remaining valve body bolts from the main control valve body and
carefully remove the main control valve body.
Installation

1. NOTE: Shift the transaxle into REVERSE (R) to place the manual valve
detent lever (7A115) in the correct position for installation.

Install the main control valve body using a mirror to align the groove of the
manual valve with the manual valve detent lever.
1. NOTE: Secure the wiring clips to the main control valve body when the
valve body bolts are installed.

Tighten the valve body bolts to 7.8-11 Nm (69-95 lb-in).

1. Connect the wiring connectors.

1. NOTE: Do not use gasket sealer, RTV, etc. on the transmission fluid pan or
oil pan to case gasket.

Install the transmission fluid pan with a new oil pan to case gasket. Tighten the
transmission oil pan bolts to 7.8-11 Nm (69-95 lb-in).

1. Lower the vehicle.

1. Add Motorcraft Mercon® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-


QDX or equivalent Mercon® Fluid to the proper level and check for fluid leaks.

1. Test drive the vehicle and verify that shift points are accurate and precise.
