Polygcnetic Traits are traits that are deri ved from the interaction of many alleles and genes
combining together lo create ~lat one trait. IF these traits were dominant/reccesive or
incomplete/codominanl then there would be only 3 choices, but in polygenetic traits there arc
numerous choices for that trait.
For example height - you could be 4'2" or 4'6'' or 4·g·• or 5·0.. or 5'2" or 5''6 or 6'2" and on and on
In order to help PROVE that polygenetic is made of many genes put together we are going to
conduct a penny lab that ""II correspond to different human heights.
Directions:
• For each trial. flip the coin SIX times and record how many heads versus tails you get for
each trail. The six nips represents six alleles combining together to create that one trait.
• You will be conducting TEN trails, each having SIX coin flips.
• Record your data in the data table below.
• Remember: Heads are dominant genes. Tails are recessi\'e genes.
Table 1: Individual
Using the infonnation below, the number of heads to tails ratio represents a certain human height.
Construct a Bar Graph for both your individual results and class results.
Make sure to include a KEY (Individual vs class).

2) A man is 5 feet 7 inches tall, has 3 heads (dominant genes) and 3 tails (recessive genes). He will
give 3 genes to his child. These 3 genes can be given randomly.
If a male is 5 feet 9 inches tall, it means that he has 4 dominant genes and 2 recessive. He will only
give 3 genes to his child. What are the possible combinations of genes that he can give?
He can give _2_ dominant and _ O __ recessive
He can give ____],,_ dominant and __\ _ recessive

3) The male is 5 feet 7 inches and the female is 5 feet 5 inches. Is it possible for them to give their
child the necessary genes so the child can be 5 feet 11 inches tall? Explain your answer.
