The user is
very important
The User is very important because:
+ They will use the refrigerator every day
+ They will do the routine maintenance
+ They will ensure the system is in good condition
We are important to the User because:
+ We can help if there is a problem

The user needs to know…
We must train the user about:

+ How to get help
+ Daily operation of the refrigerator
+ Storage and handling of vaccines
+ Operation of the freezer
+ Routine maintenance and record keeping
+ What problems to look for
+ What checks to make
+ Manuals and documents provided
+ To love their fridge!

User guide
Talk through the User Guide with the user.
+ Check their understanding of all points
+ Give them time to ask questions
+ Hand the document over to them when you have finished

Getting help
Where to find help information:
+ How to get help should be stated on the User Guide
+ It should also be written on the sticker fixed to the lid of the refrigerator
+ This may be MoH support or a local service provider

After the installation
When first turning on the refrigerator,

or if it has been off for more than 3 days:
+ Let it run for 7 days before use to allow temperature to stabilise
+ Before loading with vaccines, ensure that the temperature display

on the front of the refrigerator reads +4.5ºC or less by 4pm
Storage temperature
The user must know:
+ How to read the temperature display (use a torch if necessary)
+ Know the correct temperature for vaccine storage (+2ºC to +8ºC)

Vaccine storage
Instructions for safely storing vaccines:
+ Always store vaccine in the original packaging.
+ Only store vaccines in the refrigerator.
+ Store your vaccine neatly.
+ Always store the same type of vaccine together.
+ Use the baskets provided – do not store vaccine outside the baskets.
+ Store the more frequently used vaccines in the top baskets.
+ Always use older vaccines before newer ones and check that the date has not expired.
Daily routine
The user must perform these actions daily:
+ Keep the refrigerator closed. Only open when required and lock after use.
+ Check the temperature and complete the written record as required.
+ Wipe away any moisture inside the refrigerator.
+ Clean the area around the refrigerator, ensure there is no debris blocking
the ventilation and nothing likely to damage the refrigerator.
+ Never keep food or drink in the refrigerator.

Freezer operation
Designed to freeze 2.4kg (4x 0.6L) ice packs per day.
Usage instructions:
+ Designed to freeze 2.4kg (4 x 0.6 litre) ice packs per day.
+ Use the inner foam lid – always replace it securely.
+ Use the basket provided.
+ Load ice-packs into the freezer only in the morning

(they should be frozen by the following morning).
+ Keep the freezer de-frosted – especially around the inner foam lid.
Defrosting
Defrost when necessary
When humidity is high, you may get a build up

of ice around the freezer lid (as shown).
Turn the freezer off and this will melt.
The user must know where to locate the freezer switch.
Only switch the freezer off for defrosting.

When to switch off
Always leave the refrigerator ON.
Only turn it OFF if there is a fault.

Weekly maintenance
The user must perform these actions weekly:
+ Drain any moisture from the bottom of the refrigerator.
+ Check the ice accumulation on the freezer.

If it is more than 5mm or around the foam lid, then defrost.
Monthly maintenance
The user must perform these actions monthly:
+ Clean the refrigerator
+ Clean the lid gasket
+ Remove dust from condensers using a dry soft brush.
+ Check the freezer fan is working properly (if fitted).

Six-monthly maintenance
These actions must be performed

every 6 months (usually by a technician):
+ Check for damage to the refrigerator, cables and fixings.
+ Check all mechanical fixings and electrical connections are secure.
+ Inspect the gasket for cracks. Check the seal (paper test).
Suggestions for
good user training
Ask the users to say what you have told them

to check that they have understood correctly.
It helps the users to remember if you ask

them to demonstrate what you have told
them by doing it. For example:
+ Cleaning the refrigerator
+ Cleaning the condensers
+ Reading and recording the temperature

Before you go…
Make sure...
+ You are satisfied that the user understands

and can do everything you have told them.
+ The user knows how to get help if required.
+ There is a maintenance plan that will work.
+ All the documentation is in the correct place.
