For the learner:
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often
used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create
and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies
and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

What I Can Do This section provides an activity which will
help you transfer your new knowledge or skill
into real life situations or concerns.
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

What I Know
Let us begin!
The social sciences are the fields of scholarship that study society. Social
science is commonly used as an umbrella term to refer to a plurality of fields outside
of the natural sciences. These include: anthropology, archaeology, business
administration, communication, criminology, economics, education, government,
linguistics, international relations, political science, sociology and, in some contexts,
geography, history, law, and psychology (Theo and Baerveldt 2001).
Let us recall some of the different disciplines in the Social Sciences and
connect their historical or social foundations accordingly.
In the field of Economics, they started even before the ancient time in early
civilizations because during that time, people have needs to be satisfied; while
producing goods at the same time, exchange goods with others.
Now, it’s your turn to complete the following statements by answering the
question: when and how did these social science disciplines started? Use a separate
piece of paper to write your answers.

Lesson
Emergence of the Social
1 Science Disciplines
The different social science disciplines may pose different points of inquiry
from one common social phenomenon. This also goes with our everyday life events
and activities that involved people living together in the society. While one discipline
is different on its perspective with the others, the main purpose of each discipline of
the social science is to characterize the nature of being human (Tapel 2016).
What’s In
Today, we will help you trace down historical foundation and social context
of each Social Science disciplines. But before that, let us first check if you
remember the different social science disciplines. Here you go:

What’s New
In Social Science, everyday life has gone beyond its usual definition and usage:
it has come to mean a pattern of activities of a group of people within a society and
thus a good source of information about the structures of their lives worldview, and
individual decisions and struggles (Villanueva 2016).
Examine the pictures provided below. Rank (1st , 2nd, 3rd, 4th ) each of the
pictures representing the different disciplines of social sciences according to when it
has emerged as a discipline. Write your answers in the blanks.

What is It
In 1760, there have been much effort to study man and society. For instance,
the birth of social sciences was triggered capitalism, the fast-growing socio-economic
system during those times. Along with urbanization is the increase in the population.
These events set the pace to work multiplication. It also led to the creation of different
fields of study, which has been the response to the societal problems during those
times.
In the early 19th century, liberal ideas spread across Europe. Auguste Comte
coined the term, Sociology and eventually become accepted by thinkers. Various
disciplines of the social sciences were established and institutionalized to a high
degree.
11
Many of these disciplines has become subjects for research in the 20th century.
However, because of the young disciplines, there arise much debates about the limits
and boundaries of each social science disciplines. For instance, there have been a lot
of transitions from one social science discipline to the others to different field of
studies. Eventually, the institutionalization has bridge the differences and set the
pace towards further progress of the disciplines.
It is essential that you compare and contrasts the events and make further
conclusions about the emergence of each of the disciplines of the social sciences. In
this lesson, you will be able to trace the historical foundations and social context of
each discipline that lead to their development (Tapel 2016).
Anthropology Economics
Initially, Anthropology as the study of human life and culture, started during
the 17th and 18th century in Europe because of the European Age of Enlightenment,
12
where people based their thoughts on scientific and rational philosophical thoughts
rather than religious beliefs. Accordingly, Economics, which is the study of the
production, distribution and consumption of food and services started during the
16th century in Europe because of the need to establish economic policy that
encourage national self-sufficiency (Tapel 2016).
Geography Linguistics
The study of Political Science started during the ancient times in Europe
because people in the early times aimed to exercise and resist power imposed to
them. Psychology on one hand, started during 600 to 300 BC because early
philosophers were curious with the nature of knowledge. On the other hand,
13
sociology is a newer discipline established during the 19 th century because
philosophers back then aimed to examine nature of human society (Tapel 2016).
