Assessment 3 Problem Solving

1. The document provides survey assessment questions and solutions for a student named Laurence Dave B. Belason. 2. The first question asks the student to determine the error of a 100m steel tape measurement due to temperature change and tension, and calculate the corrected length. The corrected length is calculated to be 4761.976m. 3. The second question involves completing the level notes for a double-rodded line between two benchmark stations and calculating the elevation of one benchmark from the other.

Assessment 3

NAME: Laurence Dave B. Belason DATE: January 15, 2021

1. 10pts: A line was determined to be 4761.25 m. when measured with a 100-m steel tape
supported throughout its length under a pull of 4kg at a mean temperature of 35°C. Tape
used is of standard length at 20°C under a pull of 7kg. Cross-sectional area of tape is 0.07
sq.cm. Coefficient of thermal expansion is 0.0000116/°C. Modulus of elasticity of tape of
2x10^6 kg/sq.cm.
a. Determine the error of the tape due to change in temperature
b. Determine error due to tension
c. Determine the corrected length of the line.

Solution;
a. Determine the error of the tape due to change in temperature.

Solution;

Given: C = 0.0000116/°C, L=4761.25 m, Ts = 20°C, T= 35°C

𝑪𝑻 = 𝑪𝑳(𝑻 – 𝑻𝒔)
CT = [(0.0000116/°C) (4761.25m)] [35°C - 20°C]
CT = 0.828m

b. Determine error due to tension.

Solution;

Given: A=0.07 sq.cm, E=2x10^6 kg/sq.cm, L=4761.25 m, T= 35°C, Pm= 4kg, Ps=7kg

( Pm−P s ) L

Cp= =
AE (0.07 sq . cm)(2 x 10 6 kg/sq . cm)
Cp= -0.1020 m
c. Determine the corrected length of the line.

L’ = L + CT – Cp
L’ = 4761.25m + 0.828m + (0.1020m)
L’ = 4761.976m
2. 10pts: Complete the following differential level notes for a double-rodded line from BM1 to

accidental errors. Tabulate values accordingly.
