MODULE 1 LESSON 1

Take Action
Activity 1 – Think-Pair-Share
1. Get a partner (A and B)
2. Discuss the Sabre-tooth curriculum and answer the following:
a. Does the Sabre-tooth curriculum still exist at present? Give examples of your evidence.
Answer: For my own opinion, the saber tooth curriculum still exists until now because our
educational system teaches students on how to do particular tasks on their own and we let
them do the things which can help them to exercise their minds as well as their skill. For
example, new curriculums implement practicums in various subjects specifically those
whom undertaken vocational courses. This practicum helps students to gain knowledge
through experience and learn from the actual work or practicum rather than lectures.
b. Describe the kind of curriculum that exists as described in the article.
Answer: The curriculum that was being described on the article actually conveys a
message in a form of the premise “we should teach them on how to catch a fish using their
hands rather than using a net.” In which it implies that we teachers/future teachers, we
must teach the young on how to manipulate their cognitions, we should let them think and
we should let them do things on their own rather than spoiling them with all their needs and
covets.
c. What does the author mean, when he said, “A curriculum should be timeless?” Explain.
Answer: It simply means that our education system should fit with the needs of the time
and serve a purpose. Ultimately, these curricular decisions should be made by our society
to fit our needs, rather than by individual teachers, school buildings, or districts.
d. What is the difference between education and training?
Answer: The difference is that, the term training implies the act of imparting a special skill
or behavior to a person, which is commonly offered to employees of operational level.
While education, is a process of systematic learning something in an institution that
develops a sense of judgment and reasoning in employees. And to add, training is
undertaken in the hopes of gaining a specific skill. Generally, this skill will make you more
employable. While education is undertaken in the hopes of furthering your individual
knowledge and developing your intellect.

Activity 2 – Observing a Curriculum in a Classroom

Visit a classroom other than your own with permission from the teacher.
(Elementary, High School, College).
Do the two activities:
1. Observe the classroom situation
2. Interview the teacher
Focus your interview and interview on the presence or absence of the seven types of
curricula and their descriptions.
3. Record your observation and interview on the matrix provided.
Guide questions for Observation and Interview.
1. What curricula are present in the classroom from my observation?
Answer: During our observation, some curricula that we have observed are
Recommended Curricula, Written Curricula, Taught Curricula, Hidden Curricula,
Supported Curricula and Learned Curricula.
2. What curricula are present in the classroom from my interview?
Answer: During our interview, curricula that are present are Recommended, Written,
Taught, Supported, Assessed, Learned and Hidden Curriculum. It means that all
curricula are present during interview.
3. How do I describe what I observed? interviewed?
Answer: In our observation as we look inside the classroom, the classroom and
teachers itself provides basic framework for the curriculum which includes policies,
standards and regulations in the classroom. There are also teachers guide, syllabi,
modules books and available resources that will used by the teacher and students.
The teacher has also own techniques to make learning and teaching meaningful.
Some of these are using printed materials, charts, poster and many other for her
teachings.
On the other side, during interview, the teacher that we had interview has a positive
mind and knowledgeable to do her best for the positive outcome of learning in her
students. She knew that her skill to facilitate learning based on the written curriculum
with the aid of instructional materials and facilities are necessary in her teachings.
She is aware that the role of teachers in the curriculum process is to help students
develop an engaged relationship with the content and the absolute learning process.
4. Is there a type of curricula not present in the classroom? Identify.
Answer: None

Type of Curriculum What observation/information did I get? Or What answers did I

get from my interview?
1. Ideal or It provides a basic framework for the curriculum. It identifies the
Recommended key learning areas.
2. Intended, Official or It is the teacher’s guide or the lesson plan of the teacher.
Written
3. Implemented or It is the lesson that the teachers teach to their children
Taught

taught to the students.

Self-Check
I. Spin a Win: Agree or Disagree
Read each statement and decide whether you Agree or Disagree. Write your answer
before each number.
Agree 1. In the Saber Tooth Curriculum, learning is experimental and authentic.
Disagree. 2. It is a reality that there exists more than one curriculum in the teacher’s
classroom.
Agree 3. A teacher can say with confidence that learning has occurred, if the curriculum
has been assessed.
Agree 4. Some curricula in the schools/classrooms are unwritten.
Agree 5. To establish national standards, teachers should be guided by recommended
curriculum in basic and higher education.
Agree 6. Teachers should expect that school curricula are dynamic and changing.
Agree 7. Evaluated curriculum makes judgment about learning.
Disagree 8. Textbooks and modules are written curricula that represent the recommended
curricula.
Disagree 9. Only the Department of Education can recommend a curriculum.
Agree10. In the heart of all the types of curricula, the teacher has a major role.

Self-Reflect
1. Is it necessary for teachers to learn about school curriculum? Why? Write your
answer on the space provided below.
Answer:
In my own sentiment, yes. It is extremely important for the teacher to learn and
understand about the school curriculu m as it plays a key role in developing, implementing,
assessing, modifying and shaping the school. As every teacher comes with different
experience and background, a school curriculum will always help the teacher to adjust in
the environment better. Every school has different set of curriculum and different
pedagogies. A school always ensure giving training to its teachers. We must understand
that a good curriculum is one thing but achieving it may require many resources and
teachers are the primary resource that help in the good floatation of the curriculum. A
teacher must understand that curriculum is content, but when contextualized, it comes alive
for students. The role of teachers in the curriculum process is to help students develop an
engaged relationship with the content and the absolute learning process. Active learning
will increase the focus and retention of the curriculum, resulting in an exciting learning

4
FM-AA-CIA-15 Rev. 0 10-July-2020

environment. Teachers must build lessons that include simulations, experiments, case
studies and activities to deliver curriculum. This interactive approach intertwines curriculum
and practical experiences that immerse students in learning. The curriculum process
provides opportunity for teachers to be creative and put their unique stamp on the
classroom experience.
LESSON 2

Activity 1: Let’s Do a Simple Survey
Have you done a survey before? In this activity you will gather information direct
from teachers to find out what curriculum activities they are involved in.

Here are the steps. Follow these.

Step 1 –Form two groups in the class. Group A will survey elementary teachers, and Group
B will survey secondary or high school teachers.
Step 2 – Each group will look for at least 30 teachers coming from one or different
schools and are currently teaching either in the private or public schools.
Step 3 – With the use of the Teacher Survey Tool below, conduct the survey during your
vacant periods.

I am as Teacher! Who Am I as a curricularist?

Instructions: Identify on the blank provided who am I as Curricularist based on the cases
presented.
Case 1: I have a good idea on how to make my learners pay attention to the lesson. I
will use the new idea and find out if it will work. Evaluates the Curriculum

11
FM-AA-CIA-15 Rev. 0 10-July-2020

Case 2: DepEd sent the standards, competencies and guidelines in teaching the
Mother Tongue in Grade 1 in our school. I will study and use it in the coming
school year. Iniatiates the Curriculum
Case 3: There is so much to do in one school day, I seem not able to do all, but I have
to accomplish something for my learners. I have made a daily activity plan to guide
me. Write the Curriculum
Case 4: I need a poem to celebrate the World Teachers’ Day. I composed one to be
used in my class in Literature. Innovates the Curriculum
Case 5: My class is composed of learners from different home background and
culture. I cannot use a “one-size-fits all strategy” in teaching so I can respond to
the diverse background. In my readings, I discovered that there are various ways
of teaching. I tried one myself and it worked. Plans the Curriculum
Case 6: Knowledge is limitless. What I learned in college is not enough. I need to
know more, so I enrolled in the graduate school to advance my learning. Initiates
the Curriculum
Case 7: At the end of the year, my performance as a teacher is reflected in the school
performance of my students. So I need to provide a monitoring tool to measure
how they are progressing. The result will inform me how I will address my learners’
weakness and enhance their strengths. Evaluates the Curriculum
Case 8: I am teaching in a very far away barangay with no electricity yet. Many of the
instructional aids for teaching sent to our school are films and video tapes which
need power. I cannot use them, but the lessons are very important. So I thought of
making an alternative activity. I took my class to the river and waterfall instead of
doing the lesson. Plans the Curriculum
Case 9: My principal asked me to attend a write shop to make the lesson exemplars in
the teaching of science in Grade 7. In the workshop, I used my experiences as a
science teacher for ten years, and my knowledge of the subject matter. At the end
of three days, I was able to produce lesson exemplars which I am proud of.
Knows the Curriculum
Case 10: In grade 7 to grade 10 of the K to 12 Enhanced Curriculum, science as a
subject is presented, taught and learned in a spiral manner. This is part of the
DepEd implementing guidelines of the curriculum. I am a Biology major, and I have
insufficient knowledge about the other areas of science such as Physics and Earth
Science. Because of this dilemma, I have to request the principal that we have
team teaching. Which role of the curricularist, am I trying to do? Initiates the
Curriculum

Did you learn more from the cases?

Answer: YES

Self-Reflect
Choose from Case 1 to 10 above. Reflect on the case you have chosen and write
you reflections on the box. Ask your classmate to read and commend on your reflections.
Both of you, discuss your answers.

A. My Reflections on Case No. 1 (refer to cases 1 to 10 above)

12
FM-AA-CIA-15 Rev. 0 10-July-2020

Most teachers daily confront the reality that student attention wanders in class. They
can be seen nodding off, sleeping, gazing distractedly at some point other than the front of
the room, texting, or working on something for another class. It’s a problem, and one that
teachers often find hard not to take personally.
Teachers should try to improve student attentiveness by using a variety of
instructional approaches, especially those that actively engage students. These activities
enable students to encounter the content in different formats and make it easier for them to
pay attention after the activity has ended. As a teacher, you still have to do your best and
try to get them to learn in the newest techniques that you can do for a best learning
outcome.
Getting the best from your students might not be easy, but we should try to achieve it
all the time, ‘boring’ subjects included. Remember that things have changed and what
worked for you might not work for a class of children or teenagers nowadays. They have
different demands and have to live up to new expectations, so be prepared to understand
them and offer the best class you can.
B. What my partner said about my reflections:
The reflection of my partner, Joana Marie Mondares is well explained and I clearly
understand what she really meant to say. Her reflection is relevant until now because it is
true that most of this time, students are not paying attention in the class and teachers must
do another way to get their attention. I think, her reflection is an eye opener for those
teachers who are still in a traditional kind of teaching
