What’s New

ACTIVITY NO. 1

In your paper, write your ideas why we need to

wear that particular PPE when performing that task.

2
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS IN USING
Lesson
TOOLS AND MATERIALS

CHECK UP AND REPAIR OF TOOLS AND MATERIALS

LO 2. APPLY APPROPRIATE SAFETY MEASURES

2.1 Use tools and materials according to specifications and
procedures
2.2 Wear outfits according to farm requirements.

Agriculture is the producers of the countries food, everything

we eat is the product of sacrifice and hard labor of the workers.
Growing population means higher needs of the product. The
natural nutrients in the field are slowly depleted and the birth of
the new pest threatens the percentage of supply. The event of
food shortage is unavoidable.

The old ways of farming which use simple ways and tools
like animals and bolo without pesticides and fertilizers. It should
be upgraded to meet the population’s demands. Through the
evolution of time chemicals and materials used by the farmer are
getting complicated. Due to technology and invention, the old
ways are being replaced. Farming became complex and
procedures of equipment need to be followed. The safety of the
worker became at stake in the present.

Handling highly poisonous chemicals in the farm should be

deal seriously. These chemicals are fatal, if protection is
neglected and safety procedure is violated. The hazard of
machine in the work place is growing due to uneducated used
and failure to follow safety procedures. In this manner to identify
hazard and its corresponding maintenance task are important to
lessen the damage to workers.

3
What’s In

Materials in the farm today are too complicated compared to

the old days. Before we can work in the farm without protection
like mask and gloves, since chemicals are not practiced in
farming before. Personal protective equipment are significant for
the worker to stay healthy and productive. Proper disposal of the
materials like chemicals should be followed to avoid
contamination and being poison.

What Is It

Personal protective equipment (PPE).

Any equipment which protects the worker from a health and

safety risk. In the work place handling chemicals and equipment’s
are usual. Agricultural worker may exposed to chemicals, such as
pesticides, veterinary drugs, solvents, and oils which might in a
long-term cause asthma, skin problems, harm the nervous system
or even cancer. The reaction of the molecules when it is on full
contact to the human body is harmful. Pesticides and herbicides
are design to hinder pest and herbs excluding us. Pest and herbs
are organic matter like humans. The chemical composition of the
chemicals are to supress the subject. But workers are humans
and organic matter, so worker are also vulnerable to toxicity.
Manipulating machines in the work place are hazardous to
worker, in a blink of an eye some parts can be faulty. PPE is the

4
barrier between worker and hazardous chemicals and machines
in the work place.

Below are list of Personal Protective Equipment and its

uses

Types of Uses of PPE’s

PPE’s
1.Face It is use to avoid to inhale hazardous chemicals
Mask and dust in the work place.
To keep lungs of worker healthy
2.Eye It is used to void dust and chemicals to enter the
gaggles eyes.
To prevent sands to enter the eyes.
3. Ear To protect eardrum from excessive noise in the
protection work place.
4. Gloves To avoid contact of chemicals and other sharp
materials in the work place.
Gloves use even handling hot objects.
5.Head gear Used to avoid contact with the chemicals and
protect head from falling debris in the work
place.
6. Safety Used to avoid contact with the chemicals and
boots protect foot from falling debris and sharp objects
in the work place
7.Long Used to avoid contact with the chemicals and
sleeves and protect body from sharp objects and radiation in
pants the work place
8.Soap Used to clean wounds and disinfect. To wash
away toxic chemicals if in case have contact with
skin.

5
Handling and Disposal of Poisonous chemicals.

These are steps and procedures provided by the

manufacturer to its client to avoid being harm. Harmful chemicals
should be treated at outmost concerned since it could end life at
instant if proper medical needs is not meet then chemicals can
contaminate food and water supply.

Below are Methods in handling and Disposal of

Poisonous chemicals.

1. Use PPE’s Personal protective equipment

2. DO NOT TAKE OR DRINK alcoholic drinks 24 hours before
handling during application and up to 48 hours after handling
or application.
3. Store in original container tightly closed.
4. Away from food and water supply.
5. While mixing used PPEs.
6. Avoid skin contact and inhalation of spray mist or dust.
7. Wash hands and exposed skin with plenty of soap and water
before eating and after work.
8. Dispose empty container safely by putting in the hole with
cover and far from bodies of water.
9. Avoid using empty gallon for water storage.
10. Extra chemicals should be sealed tightly and put in the
safe cabinet away from reach of children and away from
food container and water.

Hazard in handling, transporting and maintenance of

equipment’s.

In the work place the hazard is high. Maintenance activities

in agriculture are various and include the maintenance of both
machinery and infrastructure, and the task range from oil and filter
6
changes, battery charging and replacement, lubrication. Clearing
blockages and maintenance of hydraulic systems and tractors.
Maintenance of roofs and glasshouse, silos, slurry tanks, bins and
grain tanks and electric fences and roads. Farmers often carry out
a lot of maintenance work by themselves. This applies to routine
maintenance like general repair work as well as day-to-day
maintenance. Financial pressures lead to a situation in which
farmers choose the do-it-yourself approach instead of paying a
specialist contractor. This increases the risk of accidents because,
on the one hand, the farmer may not have competences in
maintenance and on the other, machines and vehicles in
agriculture are becoming more and more sophisticated, thus
requiring qualification in maintenance and repair. Because of the
wide variety of tasks, there are many different hazards involved.

Below are the list of hazard.

1. Mechanical hazard
2. Electrical Hazard
3. Thermal hazard
4. Noise
5. Vibration
6. Hazard associated with materials and substances
7. Ergonomic Hazard
8. Unexpected start-up, unexpected
9. Working in confined spaces
10. Slip, strips and falls.

Below are table of hazard and its corresponding Maintenance
