Background of The Study

This study examines the effects of social media on the mental health of STEM students at UE-Caloocan. CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Social media has become a significant factor in many STEM Student’s day to day

routine. The primary reason we use social media is to stay connected. The modern world

is a place where the connection between individuals is simplified by the various channels

and platforms available to us on the internet. Social media can play a big role in your

mental health. The strength of our connections has a huge impact on our mental health

and happiness. Being socially connected to others can ease stress, anxiety, depression,

boost self-worth, provide comfort, joy, prevent loneliness and even add years to your life,

but it can also be the reason to trigger a serious risk to your mental health and emotional

health. Social media exposes students to a whole new way of learning. According to

researchers, the students who are frequent users of Social media are more innovative and

exhibit better memory. It can also promote negative experiences such as: Inadequacy

about your life or appearance. Social media can also be the reason to increase the risk of

depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts. The impact of

social media on millennials and Generation Z has been more evident as compared to

older generations.
Significance of the Study

This study hopes to establish an understanding in the effects of the Social Media

on the mental health of STEM students of UE-Caloocan. Furthermore, this study will be

benefited to the following stakeholders:

To the future researchers.

The findings of this research will serve as a reference and good source of useful

information they can use for their research.

To the students.

The findings of this study will help the students gain a clear understanding of the

use of social media and learn from the experiences of the STEM students about the harm

it has caused to their mental health.

To the parents.

The result of this study will help them know the bad things that their son and daughter

experienced or may experience about using social media.

To teachers.

This study will give teachers new knowledge and information about social media

affecting one’s mental to share with their students.

To social media users.


This study will help social media users be mindful of the things they do online

and give them the knowledge they can share with other people who use social media

platforms.

Statement of the Problem

Social media enable us to publish and access information, collaborate on a

common effort, or build relationships. It has become an integral part of one’s life. But

what is social media to us, students?

This research aims to know how long social media affects the mental health of

STEM students in UE, Caloocan City. The study will attempt to answer the following

questions that will serve as a guide:

1.) What are the negative impact of social media to the students’ mental health?

2.) What are the benefits of social media that helps students’ mental health?

3.) How does social media affects the mental stability of a students?
