GRAFFITI: ART or VANDALISM

Graffiti has been a long controversial issue among our society. Some may think it is a form of an
artistic expression while others propose to entirely ban graffiti. Is it art or property damage? Both?
What should we make of the graffiti we encounter in our day-to-day lives? Are graffiti artists bringing
to life sterile urban environments, adding creativity and colour to otherwise run-down areas or are they
making cities appear dangerous and crime-ridden, ruled by street gangs?

On the one hand, let us take a look at the art hidden behind this drawings; of course, talking about the
really amazing part of this art. Graffiti allows artists to express themselves freely, to open up their soul
in front of a larger audience and to show up the way they see life. This kind of art is used nowadays
for various things, such as movie posters, celebrity memorials or great background for artistic photos.
They can be used to get a message out to the public and to pass on freedom, power, happiness. Many
people see them out there and just wonder: From where did he/she get that inspiration? , or What does
this mean? It looks amazing!. Furthermore, is a great way for young artists to make themselves heard
and to evolve in this area and can be the start of their career. In fact, many of the well known artists
out there started on the street , painting walls in the dark and being afraid not to get caught, such as
Keith Haring or Jean-Michel Basquiant.

On the other hand, graffiti can be easily considered vandalism. To start with, most of the drawings out
there are made without having anyone’s permission. The ‘‘artists’’ , as they call themselves, go
wherever they want and deteriorate buildings and walls, without caring about the damage that they
create or that is a private propriety. This kind of situations can affect the balance of the society,
creating the impression that is ok to damage any kind of buildings, even the one’s that have national
importance. What is more is that most of the times, the graffiti that we see is represented actually just
by vulgar messages written on walls or provocative images, and it is not something that would please
the eyes. Also, this represents a very bad influence on the younger generations, who should be taught
beautiful things that will help them in their adult life that will come.

Weighing up both sides of the argument, graffiti will always be an unsolvable problem of the society,
because people will never completely agree one with another in deciding whether it is ART or
VANDALISM. Personally speaking, I see graffiti as a very pleasant form of art , but just when it is
created as it should. Special areas should be created for street artists to unleash themselves,
