1 Connectors
WEEK 1
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a) Define the features of Connectors

b) Identify the Logical Connectors used in the paragraph
c) Construct a paragraph using logical connectors
d) Appreciate the importance of logical connectors in achieving paragraph cohesion.

What I Need to Know

Defining features of Conjunctions and Connectors

Conjunction is a word that joins parts of a sentence, phrases or other words together. Conjunctions
are used as single words or in pairs. Also, conjunctions may be used to begin certain sentences.

Example: and, but, or, are, used by, themselves, whereas, neither/nor, either/or are conjunction pairs.

A paragraph developed by process uses connectors to show the sequence, instruction or direction.
Connectors are used between two separate sentences. It is also helpful in presenting ideas in a paragraph in
logical order.

Activity 1

Directions: Read each sentence. Identify the connector used in each sentence. Encircle the
letter of your choice.

1. Alice seems quite intelligent; ………………, she often gets poor grades.

A. however B. moreover C. nonetheless D. otherwise
2. This restaurant has some of the best chefs in the town. …………………. their service is
excellent.
A. moreover B. Inspite of C. Beside D. In addition to
3. I’ve never been to the US …………………… . having friends and relatives there.

Logical connectors are commonly used in various text types.

The four types of texts with example each:

1. Expository- its main purpose is to explain or inform. It talks about a subject without giving
opinions. This is one of the most common types of texts. You always see it in textbooks and
how-to articles. The author just tells you about a given subject, such as how to do something.

Key Points:
 Usually explains something in a process.
 Is often equipped with facts and figures.
 Is usually in a logical order and sequence.

Example:
“I’m using the term ‘Chinese mother’ loosely. In like manner, I know some Korean, Indian,
Jamaican, Irish and Ghanaian parents who qualify too. Conversely, I know some mothers of
Chinese heritage, almost always born in the West, who are not Chinese mothers, by choice or
otherwise. I’m also using the term ‘Western parents’ loosely. Western parents come in all
varieties. All the same, even when Western parents think they’re being strict, they usually don’t
come close to being Chinese mothers. For example, my Western friends who consider
themselves strict make their children practice their instruments 30 minutes every day. An hour at
most. For a Chinese mother, the first hour is the easy part. It’s hours two and three that get
tough.” by Amy Chua (https://literarydevices.net/narrative-essay/)
2. Descriptive- Descriptive writing's main purpose is to describe. It is a style of writing that focuses on
describing a character, an event, or a place in great detail. It can be poetic when the author takes the
time to be very specific in his or her descriptions

Key Points:
 It is often poetic in nature
 It describes places, people, events, situations, or locations in a highly-detailed manner.
 The author visualizes what he or she sees, hears, tastes, smells, and feels.

Example:
Taj Mahal is an immense mausoleum of white marble. It was built in Agra between 1631 and 1648 by
order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in order to remember the memory of his favorite wife. The Taj
Mahal is the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's
heritage. The Taj Mahal is located on the right bank of the Yamuna River in a vast Mughal garden that
encompasses nearly 17 hectares, in the Agra District in Uttar Pradesh. The Taj Mahal is considered to
be the greatest architectural achievement in the whole range of Indo-Islamic architecture. Moreover, its
recognized architectonic beauty has a rhythmic combination of solids and voids, concave and convex
and light shadow. Furthermore, arches and domes increase the aesthetic aspect. The color combination
of lush green scape reddish pathway and blue sky over it show cases the monument in ever changing
tints and moods. (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/252/)

3. Persuasive- Persuasive writing's main purpose is to convince. Unlike expository writing,

persuasive writing contains the opinions and biases of the author. To convince others to agree
with the author's point of view, persuasive writing contains justifications and reasons. It is often
used in letters of complaint, advertisements or commercials, affiliate marketing pitches, cover
letters, and newspaper opinion and editorial pieces.

Key Points:
 Persuasive writing is equipped with reasons, arguments, and justifications.
 The author takes a stand and asks you to agree with his or her point of view.
 It often asks for readers to do something about the situation (this is called a call-to-action).

Example
“Governments today do two things that I object to in particular. First, they encourage introspection,
telling us that unless men examine their testicles, unless we keep a check on our cholesterol level, then
we are not being responsible citizens. You are letting down yourself, your wife, your kids, everybody. We
are encouraged continually to worry about our health. As a consequence, public health initiatives have
become, as far as I can tell, a threat to public health. Secondly, governments promote the value of
health seeking. We are meant always to be seeking health for this or that condition. The primary effect of
this, I believe, is to make us all feel more ill.”

4. Narrative – Its main purpose is to tell a story. The author will create different characters and tell
you what happens to them. There will usually be characters and dialogue.

Key Points:
 A person tells a story or event.
 Has characters and dialogue.
 Has definite and logical beginnings, intervals, and endings.
 Often has situations like actions, motivational events, and disputes or conflicts with their
eventual solutions.
Example:
“Annie, over six feet tall, big-boned, decided that she would not go to work as a domestic and leave her
“precious babes” to anyone else’s care. There was no possibility of being hired at the town’s cotton gin or
lumber mill. But maybe there was a way to make the two factories work for her. In her words, “I looked
up the road I was going and back the way I come. Since I wasn’t satisfied, I decided to step off the road
and cut me a new path.” She told herself that she wasn’t a fancy cook but that she could “mix groceries
well enough to scare hungry away and keep from starving a man.” by Maya Angelou

Activity 2: Scanning for Text Type and Connectors

Directions: Scan the paragraphs to find the connectors used. Then read again
thoroughly to identify the text type. Write your answer on the blank.

Paragraph 1

A uniform makes all students even. It discourages the division into poor and rich.
Although, the wealth of certain students can still be recognizable, because some of them
drive expensive cars or carry around mobile phones of pricey brands, nonetheless it
makes the division less obvious. Such dress-code teaches young minds an invaluable
lesson, which is seeing what is behind the clothes. They learn to value other people for
their personal traits and qualities, rather than for such superficial aspect as dress

Paragraph 2

Friends challenge each other to be better people – and better at any and everything.
They want the best for you, and you want the same for them. The key to any good
friendship is not only camaraderie or having similarities and common likes and hobbies
and activities, but having support and encouragement, which is needed to create growth
and self-improvement. After all, we don’t have friends because we expect them to make
our lives worse. The opposite is true. People need others to add something extra to their
lives, most times for comfort. People genuinely reach their optimal self with the help of
other people. A friend, a true friend, challenges you to pursue your dreams, to take
calculated risks, to do new and exciting things that will benefit you or help you grow as a
person. Friendships are rooted in gentle pushes toward a better self.

Paragraph 3

She started with insinuations, simple, artless ones that Pierre hardly even
recognized. Then she tried blunt accusation in the privacy of their bedroom. When he
denied that, she resorted to violent, humiliating denouncements in the kitchens, the winery,
the plantations.

The angel that Pierre had married in Madagascar had become a termagant, blinded by
jealousy. Nothing he did or said could help. Often, she would refuse to speak for a week or
more, and when at last she spoke it would only be to scream yet more abuse or swear
again her intention to leave him. By the third vine-harvest it was obvious to everyone that
they loathed each other.

Paragraph 4

I hate mosquitoes because they annoy me while I am outside. For example,

whenever we have cookouts, they want to swarm all around the food. Also, when I go
fishing with my Dad, we always have to wear bug spray. The bug spray always stinks to
high heaven! Then, if you do not want to use bug spray, the only other way to get them to
leave you alone is to wear long sleeves. Yet, who wants to wear long sleeves when it is
hot outside? Nothing ruins your day like bloodsucking mosquitoes.
