Culture and Identity

Short Title: Language, Culture and Identity APPROVED

Full Title: Language, Culture and Identity

Module Code: SACD H3012

ECTS credits: 5

NFQ Level: 7

Module Delivered in 2 programme(s)

Module Contributor: Ruth Harris

Module Description: This module aims to sensitize and expose students to a wide range of issues concerning the complex
relationship between language and society by examining the resources that the linguistic system offers for
the construction of social meaning and identity. The focus will be both on a global level where the
relationship between language and power becomes evident in a political context, and at a local level where
inequalities related to social class and gender are apparent. The changing cultural and linguistic profile of
Ireland will also be examined.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to

1. Illustrate how language can be a marker of social and cultural identity and may reflect social stratification and inequality.
2. Examine samples of language and discourse to identify variations of language.
3. Critically analyse how colonisation and globalisation have led to high and low status languages and associated societal
inequalities.
4. Apply knowledge of Ireland’s current language profile to issues relating to culture and society in both traditional and multi-
cultural contexts.
5. Demonstrate an empathy and a solidarity with people from different social and cultural backgrounds.
