An Analysis of The Moral Value Reflected by The Main Character in The Novel" Brother "By David Chariandy"
The researcher chose the novel entitled "Brother" by David Chariandy because this novel has
many aspects that can be analyzed such as social conflicts, moral values and others. In this novel,
there are several moral values that are reflected by the main character. However, researchers only
focused on two things the moral values of the main characters named Michael and Francis.
Michael lives with his older brother, Francis, and their mother, Ruth, in Park, a public housing
complex on the outskirts of Toronto. Like many residents, Ruth comes from Trinidad and works
two or three shifts as a cleaning woman. As a resolute single parent, she has high hopes for her
sons. But Francis and Michael had dreams of their own, often fleeing to the Valley of the Rouge,
an urban oasis where they were free to imagine the future. Charismatic Francis takes an interest
in hip hop and starts hanging out with neighboring kids at a local barbershop where they
experiment with rhythms and rhymes, while Michael starts a romance with Aisha, whose father
is from the same part of Trinidad as Ruth. But the legacy of poverty and ordinary prejudice the
brothers faced eroded their self-confidence and thwarted their plans. The tragic shooting in the
summer of 1991 resulted in a police crackdown and led to another act of violence that changed
their lives forever.
Michael is the main Character in Brother and younger brother Francis. A Trinidadian, Afro-
Caribbean young man living in Scarborough in the 1990s. Sensitive, clumsy and unsure of
himself growing up, Michael follows Francis around and wants to do whatever he does in an
attempt to be cool. Throughout the book, the older version of Michael deals with the sadness of
losing his brother, but leaves his mother mentally unstable in front of her own feelings and
ambitions.
Mrs. Francis & Michael is an immigrant from Trinidad and a single mother who does a lot of
work to make ends meet. She worries about her boys getting involved with the wrong one and
tries her best to keep them safe in their sometimes difficult environment. He is devastated by the
death of Francis. Her reluctance to deal with her grief caused her to eventually have damage and
be hospitalized.
Based on the reasons above, the researcher intends to further analyze the moral values of
Michael and Francis as the main characters in "Brother". Therefore, the researcher conducted this
research with the title "An Analysis of the Moral Value Reflected by the Main Character in the
Novel" Brother "by David Chariandy".
