Factor tree

A factor tree gives information about all the

factors of a number.
Let us draw the factor tree of 24.
24

24

6 X 4
12
x 2

x x x 2
6 x 2 x 2
3 2 2

3 x 2 x 2 x 2

last row in all the factor trees are same,

3x2x2x2 =3x2x2x2
Common factors :
A number is said to be a common factor of
two or more numbers, if it is a factor of each of the
given numbers.
Eg :
Find the common factors of 36 and 48.
Solution :
36 = 1 x 36 48 = 1 x 48
= 2 x 18 = 2 x 24
= 3 x 12 = 3 x 16
=4x9 = 4 x 12
=6x6 =6x8
The factors of 36 are the factors of 48 are
1,2,3,4,6,9,12,18 and36. 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,16,24, 48
The common factors of 36 and 48 are
1, 2, 3 , 4, ,6 and 12
2. Find the common factors of 25 and 40
Solution :
25 = 1 x 25 40 = 1 x 40
=5x5 = 2 x 20
= 4 x10
=5x8
The factors of 25 are The factors of 40 are
1, 5 and 25 1 ,2, 4, 5 ,8 ,10,20 and 40
The common factors of 25 and 40 are 1 and 5

Highest common factor (HCF) :

HCF of 2 or more numbers is the greatest
common factor of the numbers.
Eg:
1.Find the HCF of 66 and 32
Solution :
66 = 1 x 66 32 =1 x 32
= 2 x33 = 2 x 16
= 3 x 22 =4x8
= 6 x 11
The factors of 66 are the factors of 32 are
1,2,3,6,11,22,33 and66 1,2,4,8,16 and 32

2 is the only common factor of 66 and 32.

∴ 2 is the HCF of 66 and 32.

2.Find the HCF of 25 and 35

Solution :
25 = 1 x 25 35 = 1 x 35
=5x5 =5x7
The factors of 25 are The factors of 35 are
1 , 5 and 25 1 , 5 , 7 and 35

5 is the only common factor of 25 and 35

∴ 5 is the HCF of 25 and35.

Prime numbers:
Numbers which have only 2 factors, 1 and
the number itself are called prime numbers.
Eg:
2, 3, 5 , 7, 11,13 ………

Composite numbers:
All the other numbers (not prime
numbers ) which have more than two factors are
called composite numbers.
Eg:
4 , 6, 8, 9 , 10, 12 ……..
I. Colour the prime numbers and cross out the
composite numbers :

13 15 20 23 31

72 7 81 19 5

Even numbers:
If a number leaves no remainder when
divided by 2, it is an even number.
Eg:
2, 4, 6, 8, 10 …….

Colour the even numbers:

3 , 4 , 10, 17, 18 , 20

Odd numbers:
If a number leaves a remainder when
divided by 2 , it is an odd number.
Eg:
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11……..

Colour the odd numbers

2 , 5, 7 , 11 , 16 , 21
