Theater is the art of performing that deals with the acting, dancing, and singing on the stage
that presents a dramatic story.

Philippine theater in the 21st century is one of the factors that bring the country into the
world’s spotlight. Many famous theatrical productions are played and commended in other
OBJECTIVES
countries and open doors to Filipino talents for world class performances and recognition.

1. Define the uniqueness of each original performance in the theater group.

2. Analyze examples of plays based on theatrical forms and elements of art as applied to
performance

3. Illustrate how the different elements are used to communicate the meaning of each play.

4. Contribute to the conceptualization of an original performance with the use of media and
advocacy.

5. Choreograph movements and gestures for effective delivery of an original performance.


LESSON #1

Philippine Educational Theater Association


(PETA)/Repertory Philippines.

The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) is an organization of creative and


critical artist-teacher-cultural workers, committed to artistic excellence, It was founded in 1967
by Cecile Guidote-Alvarez. Through the years it remained as one of the top theater organization
in the country. It helped develop theater artists who also believe in empowering a citizenry
through theater arts. It has also built a network of partners who value culture as a medium for
change and theater as a tool for education, social change, and development.

In 1971, PETA was named the UNESCO International Theater Institute Center in the
Philippines. It was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2017.

PETA has produce and performed adaptations of classic foreign plays as well as local and
children's theatrical productions adopting modern pop music in their performances.

The Kalinangan Ensemble (KE), as the Repertory Arm of PETA, strives to enrich Philippine
aesthetics by the use of dramatic styles rooted in local culture and enriched by foreign dramatic
contributions.

Maribel Legarda is PETA's Artistic Director who has been involved in different productions as
actress, dancer, director, and choreographer. She has also conducted and participated in
numerous workshops locally and internationally. Her latest plays include "Caredivas" and "Rak
of Aegis"

"Care Divas" is an original pinoy musical that pays tribute to all overseas Filipino workers
portraying them as modern day heroes.

"A Game of Trolls" is a musical written by Liza Magtoto directed by Maribel Legarda. It is the
story of Heck. a troll whose indifference makes him the perfect keyboard warrior for Bimbam.
The message of the musical is best illustrated with the hashtag
"#BayanMunaBagoSarili". PETA hopes that this play will be a call to action to
make young people look beyond the memes and online propaganda and encourages
them to do their own research, to think critically, and to act with responsibility.

PETA's Mobile Productions continue to make theater accessible by taking its plays
to schools, communities, and other nationwide venues.

Repertory Philippines was founded in 1967. It aims to create a venue for


actors, directors, designer, and other theater worker to use their talents to
earn a living in theater. Its founders are Zenaida Amador, Carmen
Barredo, Leo Martinez, Tony Mercado, and others.

At present, the company produces four full-length plays, one full scale
musicals, one Shakespeare or classic play, and one children's play each
year. They participate also in Philstage-sponsored outreach activities.
Achievements:
1. It established standard productions in the Philippines.
2. It developed and launched the careers of many Filipino talents.
3. It provided cultural outputs that aid the Dep-Ed in promoting
appreciation for theater, literature, and theater arts.

"Beauty and the Beast" is the story of a father with three daughters who
gets caught up in a heavy storm. Little does he know that the garden
where he picks a rose to bring to his youngest daughter, Beauty, is a part
of an enchanted castle that can only be broken by love.

LESSON #2

Trumpets/Tanghalang Pilipino

Trumpets is the first professional gospel theater group in Asia and in


the Philippines. It was established in the late 1980's by Christian
performers and theater professional, Its artistic director is Audie
Gemora.
It is known for its multimedia workshops for children, teens, and adults,
Forever 20 years, Trumpets has transformed gospel message into fun,
funky, and high quality productions. It aims to provide entertainment
while transforming the live and inculcating positive moral values
through their religious themed productions like "Joseph the Dreamer"
and "First Name".
"The Bluebird of Happiness" (2013) is a well known musical that tells
the story of the magical adventure of two poor children and their pursuit
of true happiness. It is based on the play by Belgian playwright. Maurice
Maeterlinck, 2013 Trumpets' newest original Filipino musical, with
book and lyrics by its director and music by Rony Fortich.
Cast/Characters of the story:
Mytyl and Tyltyl, lead characters
Tylette and Tylo, their pet cat and dog
Fairy - who starts them on their quest for true happiness
Light - who provides illumination to their path.
Grandma Tyl and Grandpa Tyl, grandparents
Night - the dark villain who plots the children's failure
Father Time - whom they meet in the Land of the future

The show, directed by Jaime del Mundo, also includes an artistic team
composed of Mon Faustino for musical arrangement, Mio Infante for set
& costume design. John Batalla for lighting deisgn, Sweet Plantado-
Tiongson for vocal direction ( also playing Light in some
performances ), and Nancy Crowe for choreography.
Tanghalang Pilipino (TP) was established in 1987 and is the resident
drama company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Tanghalang Pilipino productions challenge Filipinos to remain


committed to their moral convictions, uphold what is right and just, and
fulfill a shared social responsibility.
Tanghalang Pilipino envisions to raise Philippine theatre to professional
and artistic excellence as well as develop and train actors, playwrights,
and designer with emphasis in the production of original Filipino plays.
Tanghalang Pilipino looks forward to educating and awakening the
cultural consciousness of Filipino audiences through their regular
performances and other related activities like workshops, symposia, and
interactions.
"Ibalong, the Musical" tells the story of a great war between mortals and
monsters and serpentine creature who falls for a man, ushering the birth
of new civilization.
Using elaborate costumes energetic fights, choreography, and haunting
music, Tanghalang Pilipino promises an enthralling theatre experience
rarely seen in original Filipino theater.

LESSON #3
New Voice Company/Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment
Group
The new voice company (NVC) started in 1994 is one of the premiere
theater companies in the Philippines. It is head by acclaimed world
actress, model, and director, Monique Wilson.
It is known for its reputation for social and provocative feminist
productions such as David Mamet's "Oleanna" and Diane Shaffer's
"Sacrilege" to Caryl Churchill's "Top Girls" and Eva Ensler's "The
Vagina Monologues". It is marked as the most political and social
theater, group in the country dealing with contemporary political and
social issues.

NVC envisions to produce theater that enlightens, educates,


informs, inspires, and incites to action to become a powerful
catalyst for change and a necessary tool for social

"The Vagina Monologues" is made-up of a growing number of
monologues based in interviews with over 200 women about
their memories and experiences of sexuality.
It was directed by Monique Wilson and Rito Asilo, with
Rosanna Abueva as executive producer, Mel Roxas as lighting
designer, and Tcel Maramag, Lisa Santos, and Bambi Gamban
as stage and production managers.

The Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group (ATEG) is a


combination of the efforts and passion of the following people.
1. Ten Bridges Media Corp - a multimedia company established
by television industry luminaries Bobby Barreiro and Tony
Tuviera in 2013. Ten Bridges signifies the ten now ideas they
were developing in various media forms: theatre, television,
mobile, live entertainment, and digital.
2. Atlantic Productions - a theater company established by
multi-awarded director Bobby Garcia in 1998. It has staged high
quality productions from Broadway and the West End, with a
roster of top calibre theater/film/television/recording talents.
Their very first production was the Tony Award-winning
Broadway musical "Rent" which enjoyed multiple runs in
Manila.

LESSON #4

Role of Production in a Performance

These are the people who are responsible for and control the whole production on
film, theater, and etc.

1. Director - the one who supervises the creative aspects of a dramatic production
or film and instructs actors and crew.

2. Actor/Cast - the one who acts in a play, film, broadcast, or theater.

3. Choreographer - the one who creates dance composition and plans and arranges
dance movements and patterns for dance especially in a theater and musical play.

4. Stage Manager - the person who provides practical and organizational support to
the director, actors, designer, stage crew, and technicians throughout the
production.

5. Lighting Designer - the one who creates lighting, atmosphere, and mood.
6. Set Designer - responsible for creating sets for use in the production of films,
television programs and play performances.

Elements of art as applied to an original performance

1. Sound and Music is an art of sound that expresses ideas and emotions in
significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.

2. Gesture, Movements and Dance refers to performance done to emphasize and


enhance certain parts of a dialogue or scene.

3. Costume, Mask, Make-Up, and Accessories refers to the costumes and


accessories/designs that help enhance a character's performance and transport the
audience to the performance setting, partaking of the actors/actress effective
portrayals.
