Design the Activated sludge Process with the following conditions:

3
A wastewater treatment plant will receive a flow of 170 m /day with a raw wastewater BOD 5 of
278 and a BOD3 of 258. Treatment removes 91% of the BOD. The flow rate of the return sludge
and the wasted sludge are 5% and 0.05%, respectively of the Influent flow rate. Design the
3
volume (m ) required to run the plant as a "high rate" facility (F/M = 0.3 kg BOD/kg MLSSday).
The aeration basin MLSS concentration will be maintained at 1700 with 25% increase in the
wasted sludge. Design the volume of air required per day and the horsepower requirement of
the blower for the diffuser (the number depends on your design) with the piping of 8 inches in
diameter and a length of 1200 feet. The blower is at 1 atm and 30-degree C.

Q = 140 m3/day
So

= 0.3 kg BOD / kgMLSS day
MLSS = 2850 mg/L

QR = 140(0.05) =7 m /day QW = 140(0.0005) =0.07 m /day
SR=34.71 mg/L XW=1.25(2850)=3562.5 mg/L
SW=34.71 mg/L

Required:
Volume of Aeration tank = Vr
Volume of Air required = Q
Blower Power = Pb

Solution:

3
QO = 140 + 7 = 147 m /day

BOD Balance:
(140)(267) + (7)(34.71) = 147( )

S0= 255.9386 mg/L
