Class:
Grade: 6
Subject: Science
Unit: Evidence and Investigation
Lesson Duration: 60

OUTCOMES FROM 2013 MINISTERIAL ORDER: Cross-curricular Competencies

Outcomes (a to j from M.O.):
a) Know how to learn: to gain knowledge, understanding or skills through experience, study, and
interaction with others
b) Think critically: conceptualize, apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate to construct knowledge
d)manage information

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning Outcomes:
 6–2 Recognize the importance of accuracy in observation and measurement; and apply
suitable methods to record, compile, interpret and evaluate observations and measurements

Specific Learning Outcomes:

o work individually or cooperatively in planning and

o plan and carry out procedures that comprise a fair test
o identify variables:
 −  identify the variable to be manipulated
 −  identify variables to be held constant
 −  identify the variable that will be observed

OUTCOMES stated in learner friendly language

Students will:
● Be able to understand analyze and the results of chromatography, to make an educated
inference on the results.

ASSESSMENTS
Pre-assessment (prior Formative: Summative (if applicable):
knowledge) (if applicable):  Students will be
formatively assessed

LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED

Resource #1:
 Evidence & Investigation Resources
o Retrieved from Edmonton Public School District
2

Resource #2:
 Chromatography Recording Sheet
o Retrieved from Edmonton Public School District

Resource #3:
 Paper Chromatography - Chemistry Experiment with Mr Pauller
o Retrieved from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCzgQXGz9Tg

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

● Pencils
● PowerPoint
● Coffee Filters
● Markers (5 different black markers)
● Pipe Cleaners
● Chromatography Recording Sheet
● Tape
● Cups (5) per group
● Extra markers for students who finish early and want to explore other colors.

PROCEDURE
 Visual prompts
Student Differentiation:
 Oral instruction
 Direct instruction

Introduction (time: 5 mins )

Hook/Attention Grabber:
 How can you figure out what kind of pen/marker was used to write a letter?
 Paper Chromatography - Chemistry Experiment with Mr Pauller
o Retrieved from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCzgQXGz9Tg

Transition to Body:
 Now we are going to go over how we can perform our own chromatography experiments to
find out who wrote the ransom note!
Body (time: 53 mins)

Learning Activity #1: Explanation of Chromotography and Explanation of experiment

 What would be the main use of chromatography in evidence and investigation
 What is the solute and solvent in this experiment?
o Marker Ink- Solute
o Water- Solvent
 The teacher will then demonstrate the experiment the students are to preform, making sure to
3

cement the ideas of how to get correct results.

o Take a marker and draw a line on the filter paper
o Tape the non-pointed end to one of the pipe cleaners
o Fill the bottom of the cup with water (just enough to get the tip of the filter paper wet
and not to submerge the ink
o Show the results they should get and repeat the experiment on the other markers

Learning Activity #2: Chromatography Experiment and Identification

 Students will be given 5 different black markers
o Sharpie
o Dry Erase
o Crayola
o Generic Brand
o Studio Brand
 Students will be given 5 clear plastic cups, 5 strips of filer paper, 5 pipe cleaners and tape, and
water
 They will then conduct the experiment as it has been demonstrated by the teacher.
 The students will do one marker at a time, draw the line on their filter paper with the black
marker, tape it to the pipe cleaner and place it in the water over the cup
 As the students’ progress through the experiment the first couple they did should be ready to
be analyzed
 The students will dry their filter strips with paper towel and let them dry before they tape
them on their recording sheet
 They will use a ruler to measure the different lengths of colors to the best of their abilities
 They will then take their recordings and use them to determine what black marker was used to
write the ransom note
 If students finish early they can grab any of the other colors available and see what kind of
results they will get

Closure (time: 2 mins)

Feedback From Students on Learning:

Transition To Next Lesson(s):

 Next week we are going to take all that we have learned in this evidence and investigation unit
and use our skills to solve a crime scene!
