PRESS RELEASE
IMA URGES THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT TO ENHANCE MANPOWER BY
EARLY SCHEDULING FINAL UG, NEET PG AND FMGE EXAMS

India is passing through the devastating second wave of Corona which is spreading like a field fire
and crumpling the routine health care delivery. Majority of hospital beds and infrastructures are
dedicated for COVID care and the Modern medical fraternity, faculty and post graduate residents of
medical colleges are all overworked, in this great battle and are almost under the verge of burnt out
and stress. As the daily turnover of more than 2.6 lakhs patient’s inflow and it is likely to reach the
peak of 3.5 to 4 lakhs with in next two weeks, we are in acute need of more qualified doctors to
man this treacherous service.

The NEET PG exams are postponed citing the reasons of corona, which has hampered the process
of getting nearly 45000 post graduate residents who are always in the front line of the battle to
safeguard the patients. A total of 1,74,886 candidates have registered for NEET PG 2021, and waiting
for the examinations to enter in to post graduation courses. Once the exams are over most of these
doctors will join as junior residents in various institutions when they are not selected for PG Course .

Now as in the last minute the Honorable Health Minister had postponed the exams without the
rescheduled dates, the large chunk of 1,74,886 doctors are continuing their preparations for the
competitive NEET PG examination without joining any hospitals.

At this crucial junction where we need more man power, IMA request the Health ministry to
expedite the admission procedure and complete it at the earliest in war footing to replenish the
health care with much more vigil young health care professionals as post graduates and junior
doctors. The doctors who are going to serve in the COVID care works are competent enough to
protect them during the examination rituals also. The entire process of admissions can be completed
within a month time if real concentrated efforts are taken which is the need of the hour.

Equally now most of the health care universities have postponed the final year UG exams and there
by the interns entering in to the health care systems for their one year compulsory internship are
delayed and in many institution ,already joined interns have completed their internship and relieved
creating an acute shortage of interns in many medical colleges .As an emergency means the National
Medical commission and Universities shall come forward to conduct the final year exams under
online mode and enable the passed out 80000/- doctors to join the health care force to augments
its expertise care.

India has nearly one lake foreign medical graduates awaiting the clearance of FMGE exam,
mandatorily required to practice in India, even after successfully completing their medical courses
in various foreign countries. In every year the pass percentage in these exams are only around 15%
and hence 100 thousands of these doctors are just spending their time in preparations for these

FMGE exams and not able to serve. IMA agrees in principles these exams are mandatory to restore
the quality care. However, as the situation demands more hands to serve in the prompt delivery of
health care is an emergency, an onetime measures shall be taken to conduct a liberal screening test
and enrolling as much of these foreign medical graduates into our health care institutions to
augment the man power.

Whatever health care equipment’s and infrastructures are arranged, without adequate qualified
man power, the system will crumble and care will be stressed out. IMA demands, on war footing
Government health ministry and National board should come forward to streamline and expedite
the Final MBBS, NEET PG, and FMG exams and enable our awaiting young graduates to join their
altruistic services at the earliest.

Modern Medical doctors are always prepared to walk an extra mile to combat the pandemic and
IMA is sure, by conducting these exams with COVID appropriate precautions, exams centres spread
out to all districts and permitting all students to get the centres with in their district, most of our
young graduates will take up this challenge in their commitment to serve the Nations, thereby
enabling our country to face these dreaded phases of pandemic victoriously and flatten the curve.

With kind regards

Yours Sincerely

Dr. J A Jayalal Dr. Jayesh M Lele
