3. What is the difference between adoration and veneration?
Adoration, known as latria in classical theology, is the worship and homage that is rightly
offered to God alone. It is the act of acknowledging the excellence and perfection of an uncreated,
divine person, hence, it is the worship of the Creator that God alone deserves. It is the
acknowledgement of God as God, creator and savior, the Lord and master of everything that exists,
as infinite and merciful love. On the other hand, veneration, known as dulia in classical theology, is
the honor due to the excellence of a created person. This refers to the excellence exhibited by the
created being who likewise deserves recognition and honor. Thus, veneration is the high admiration
to saints and Mary. It is to be noted that, in terms of worshiping of God and Mary, Hyperdulia or
special veneration of Mary remains completely different and inferior to adoration that is due to God
alone. While veneration to Mary will always be inferior to the adoration given uniquely to God, it
will always be superior and higher than devotion given to all other saints and angels.

 Activity 2.2. Investigate on this: What are the criticisms of other Christian denominations/sects
regarding the Catholic veneration of Mary? Give at least three (5) criticisms:

1. For Mormons, Mary is special to them, but they don’t believe in the Mary worship of
other Christian faiths, including the Immaculate conception of Mary, her perpetual
virginity or her assumption. For them, they pray to the heavenly Father, with Christ being
their only intercessor and without using Mary in that role, Mary no longer has grounds for
worship, although they retain their reverence and gratitude to her.
2. Protestants often criticize Catholic devotion to Mary as they find it as a bit over-the-
top sometimes. As for instance, in Salve Regina, it the lyrics it called Mary as “Our life,
our sweetness, and our hope.” For them, how does this kind of effusive flattery
theologically defensible, as they assert that, after all, our life and hope is Jesus Christ
alone.

Write a short reflection based on this question: How do I give respect and honor to the Mother of
God?
Since I was child, my grandmother always introduced us to Mama Mary, telling us that she is
the Mother of God. We have a small altar at the center of our living room where there’s a picture of
her and our God together with the hanged blessed Holy Rosary at the top.
