Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder that occurs when nerves malfunction
because they are damaged or destroyed. Nerves might send signals of
pain when there is nothing causing pain, or they might not send a pain
signal even if a painful stimulus is given. This can be caused by injury,
systemic illness, infection, or may be associated with an inherited
disorder. The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include:

1. Tingling or numbness in hands or feet

2. A feeling like you are wearing a tight glove or sock sharp, stabbing
pains

3. weak, heavy-feeling arms and legs

4. regularly dropping things from your hands

5. Difficulty putting buttons or wearing slippers

6. A drop in blood pressure- feeling dizzy on standing

7. Sexual dysfunction, especially in men

8. Constipation

9. Digestion difficulties

10. Loose motions

11. Excessive sweating

One of the most common diseases producing peripheral neuropathy is

diabetes which is very common in our country. The diagnosis is made
using blood tests, nerve conduction study and sometimes by nerve
biopsy. Treatment consists of medications and also treatment of the
cause of the neuropathy. There are medications available to minimize
progression of diabetic neuropathy.
