Thematic Unit Questions
1. How does your thematic unit apply appropriate pedagogy and best practices are
used for the instruction of English learners? (Tasks 1.1 and 1.2)
My thematic unit applies appropriate pedagogy because it incorporates some of Howard
Gardner’s multiple intelligences like logical, visual, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. The
best practices that are used for the instruction of English learners in my thematic unit is
modeled talk, demonstrations, visuals, explanations before they start the task, group
work, and graphic organizers/worksheets that map out what their goal for that task is.
2. How are the materials used in your thematic unit culturally, linguistically, and
developmentally appropriate for English learners? (Task 2)
The materials used in my thematic unit are culturally, linguistically, and developmentally
appropriate for English learners. The materials are culturally appropriate because we are
using materials and sources that can be used anywhere but maybe in different ways. My
materials are also linguistically appropriate for ELL’s because I didn’t use difficult words
that would be culturally bias. And if there was a word that I thought would be hard for
the ELL’s, I wrote it on the board. Lastly, my materials were developmentally
appropriate for ELL students because I built them up to each task and showed them a
demonstration of how to achieve that task.
3. How do the learning activities in your thematic unit use English learners’ prior
knowledge and primary language? (Tasks 3.1 and 3.2)
The learning activities in my thematic unit use ELL’s prior knowledge and primary
language when I am building background knowledge with the class. Most of the time in
my lessons I start the lesson with questions that the students might know or can relate to.
This allows the ELL’s to use prior knowledge but probably not so much primary
language.
4. How do the teaching strategies in your thematic unit integrate and develop English
learners’ academic English in reading, writing, listening and speaking? (Task 4)
The teaching strategies in my thematic unit integrate and develop ELL’s academic
English in reading, writing, listening, and speaking because I incorporated multiple
medias and sources of learning. For example, in my lessons I am either reading a book to
the class or they are watching a video, conducting their own research, writing down facts
in their booklet, taking notes, reading articles to find information, and much more.
5. What assessment tools and techniques are included in your thematic unit to
measure English learners’ academic achievement? (Task 5)
An assessment tool and technique that is included in my thematic unit to measure ELL’s
academic achievement is word banks, repetition, group work, homework and
pictures/visuals.
6. What are the benefits of multilingualism? (Task 6)
The benefit of multilingualism is having a better memory, understanding more concepts,
and being able to multitask. A good memory allows you to retain more information.
Understanding more concepts opens more doors for the students and being able to
multitask allows the student to grow apart from listening and concentrating very deeply
to becoming a natural listener and understand everything more naturally.
7. How does your thematic unit incorporate English learners’ cultural and linguistic
assets into the classroom? (Task 6)
My thematic unit incorporates ELL’s cultural and linguistic assets into the classroom by
talking about different continents, countries, state, and landforms. These places may be
the place they come from, have family, or share the same language. It also allows the
ELL students to learn about new cultures as some of the other students may be learning
new cultures as well, apart from where both students come from.
