PUSHES AND PULL

CHAPTER- 11
Q.1) What is a force?
A force is a push or a pull that makes things move. You make things move every
day when you play soccer, push a shopping cart etc.
Q. 2) What is a push?
A push is when you move things away from you. An example of a push is when
you push a basketball toward the hoop. When you push with force, things move
away.
Q.3) What is a pull?
A pull is when you move things toward you. An example of a pull is when you pull
grass out of your yard or when you pull a tissue out of a tissue box. Things move
towards you when you pull.
Q.4) How do forces change motion?
Forces can make things speed up, slow down, or change direction. When you
want an object to stop, you can push on it. When you want an object to move
faster, you can use force for that, too.
Q.5) What can forces do?
Forces can :
i. Change the speed of an object
ii. Change the direction of movement of an object
iii. Change the size or shape of an object
Q.6 Sort the following situations under push or pull,
i) Child pulling a wagon (ii) Man hitting a golf ball  (iii) Opening the drawers
(iv) Crane pulling up an object (v) Pushing a door open
(vi) Man pushing his luggage trolley
push pull
1. Man hitting a golf ball  1. Child pulling a wagon
2. Pushing a door open 3. Opening the drawers
4. Man pushing his luggage trolley 5. Crane pulling up an object

Q.7) Differences between weight and mass

MASS WEIGHT
1. Mass is the total amount of 2. Weight is the pull of the earth
matter present in an object acting on any object
3. The unit of measuring mass is kg 2. The unit of measuring weight is
Newton (N)
4. Mass does not change from 3. Weight changes from place to
place to place place
5. Mass is measured using a top 4. Weight is measured using a
pan balance or beam balance spring balance or newton meter

Q.8 what is mass?

Mass is the total amount of matter present in an object. Mass does not change
from place to place, it is measured using a top pan balance or beam balance. The
unit of measuring mass is kg
Q.9 What is weight?
Weight is the pull of the earth acting on any object. Weight changes from place to
place, it is measured using a spring balance or newton meter. The unit of
measuring weight is Newton (N)
Q.10) Define Newton’s first law of motion.
Newton’s first law of motion states that: If the forces on a mass are balanced
then,
 If it is at rest , it stays at rest
 If it is moving , it keeps on moving at a constant speed in a straight line

Q. 11) Define centripetal force

A centripetal force is a net force that acts on an object to keep it moving along a
circular path. This force acts towards the center of the circle.

Q.12) Why does an object moving in a circle need bigger centripetal force?
An object moving in a circle need bigger centripetal force if,
 The mass of the object (body) is bigger
 The speed of the object increases
 The radius of the circle is smaller
Q.13) Define centrifugal Force
The centrifugal force drives the object away from the center. It is the outward
force that is felt by an object moving in a curved path that acts outwardly away
from the center of rotation
FORMULA:
WEIGHT= MASS X GRAVITY
W= mg
Gravity is 10m/s2 on the Earth
W= m x 10 [weight on the earth]
1
 Weight on moon = 6 × weight on earth

Q.1) An astronaut has a mass of 60kg on the earth

a) What is her mass on the moon
answer: mass = 60 kg
b) What is her weight on the earth
answer: weight = m x 10
W= 60 x 10
W= 600 N
c) What is her weight on the moon
1
answer: Weight on moon = 6 × weight on earth
1
Weight on moon = × 600
6
W = 100 N
