Exercise and individual assignments

1. Indicate the appropriate scales of measurement for each of the following variable.
1) Blood group
2) Temperature (Celsius)
3) Hair colour
4) Job satisfaction index (1-5)
5) Number of heart attacks
6) Calendar year
7) Serum uric acid (mg/100ml)
8) Number of accidents in a 3 - year period
9) Number of cases of each reportable disease reported by a health worker
10) The average weight gains of 6 1-year old dogs with a special diet supplement was
950 grams last month
11) Ethnic group
12) Date of birth
13) Duration of illness
14) Temperature in Kelvin
15) Acid pH
16) Heart rate
17) Blood pressure
18) Distance
19) Dancing Scores
2. The following data are the data on percentage saturation of bile for 29 women patients.
Compute the mean, variance, standard deviation and coefficient of variation using these data
for women. 65, 58, 52, 91, 84, 107, 86, 98, 35, 128, 116, 84, 76, 146, 55, 75, 73, 120, 89, 80,
127, 82, 87, 123, 142, 66, 77, 69, 76.
3. The number of television viewing hours per household and the prime viewing times are two
factors that affect television-advertising income. A random sample of 25 households in a
particular viewing area produced the following estimates of viewing hours per household:
3.0, 6.5, 5.0, 7.5, 9.0, 6.0, 8.0, 12.0, 5.0, 2.0, 7.5, 4.0, 1.0, 10.0, 6.5, 15.0, 5.5, 3.5, 8.0, 1.0,
12.0, 6.0, 3.0, 3.5, 5.0. Calculate the sample mean and the sample standard deviation.
4. A hospital administration wishes to know what proportions of discharged patients are
unhappy with the care received during hospitalization. If 95% C.I is desired to estimate the
proportion with 5%. How large a sample should be drawn?
5. A study of hypoxemia during the immediate post-operative period reported the fractions of
ideal weight for 11 patients who became severely hypoxemic during transfer to the recovery
room. The mean is 1.51 and the standard deviation is 0.33. Estimate the 95% C.I. for the
population mean fraction of ideal weight, where the population consists of hypoxemic
patients similar to those in the study (The data is normally distributed, use α=0.05).
6. Mather’s et al found that in a sample of 595 patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital, 204
admitted to using cannabis at least once in their life time. we wish to construct a 95%
confidence interval for the proportion of life time cannabis users in the sample population of
psychiatric hospital admission.
7. A study of gonadal dysfunction in diabetic men. Sample 1: Men with primary organic
impotence Sample impotence n1=11, x 1 = 524.0, mean total testosterone value S = 135.8.
1

Sample 2: Men with primarily psychogenic impotence n2= 7, x 2 = 701.1, mean total
testosterone value S2= 154.4. The data are normally distributed. Calculate a 99% C.I. for The
μ1-μ2.
8. Is the temperature required to damage a computer on the average less than 110 degrees?
Because of the price of testing, twenty computers were tested to see what minimum
temperature will damage the computer.  The damaging temperature averaged 109 degrees
with a standard deviation of 3 degrees.  (use 

9. Nine dogs and ten cats were tested to determine if there is a difference in the average number
of days that the animal can survive without food.  The dogs averaged 11 days with a standard
deviation of 2 days while the cats averaged 12 days with a standard deviation of 3 days.
What can be concluded? (Use  = .05)
10. A physical therapist wished to estimate, with 99% confidence, the mean maximal strength of
a particular muscle in a certain group of individuals. The therapist assumes that, strength
scores are normally distributed with a variance of 144. A sample of 15 subjects who
participated in the experiment yielded a mean of 84.3.
