SELF-LEARNING HOME TASK (SLHT)
Subject: Trends , Networks, and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century Grade: 12
A. Readings/Discussions
If you come across a design trend you like, beware. It may well be a trap, baited by
seductive advertising. A trend will normally take root only when it has proved its worth in
practicality, style and manufacturing processes over the long term.
A viable trend has an identifiable benefit over that which it seeks to displace. It will
solve a problem in an appealing way. Such a trend will garner the attention of an industry
that will make sure it has marketing legs before investing in it. And it is the manufacturers
that will then get behind the advertising.
A fad is little more than a tick in time. A temporary style or fashion. A fad is something
that evokes some perception of “coolness.” And it becomes a fad because the “me too”
herd mentality kicks in. But eventually, the “fad” fizzles and becomes “fade.”
The fad typically fizzles because of its inherent flaws. These are normally related to its
impracticality or an inherent tiresomeness.
There are three ways to distinguish a fad from a trend. It is important to know these
methods when evaluating technology and learning budgets.
TRENDS SPRING FROM REAL NEEDS - The first clue to examine is to look at the origin
of the popularity of a particular technology. Fads and trends can have similar beginnings
so some investigation is in order.
Ask the following types of questions:
Is the technology popular because it solves a specific problem?
Is it easier to use?
Is it faster or more efficient?
Trends have an identifiable benefit over previous instructional methods or approaches,
and are driven by the fact that they are solving instructional needs.

Fads, on the other hand, are driven by a “coolness” factor or even a “me-too” type
mentality. A fad starts with technology and then tries to find a need for the technology. It
should be the opposite — start with a need and then figure out what technology best
addresses that need. A fad typically doesn’t deliver on its promise while trends tend to get
stronger over time and actually solve more needs than originally anticipated.
SCOPE OF PHENOMENON
The next clue to examine is the scope of phenomenon that might become a trend or fad.
Trends tend to encompass entire areas of technology and not just a single brand or item.
For example, mobile learning became a trend because any kind of mobile device could be
used. But Google Glass was more of a fad partly because it was only one product by one
company and other manufactures really didn’t participate within that market.
While it may seem hard at the beginning to determine the scope of a phenomenon, look
at the vendors providing the technology and carefully determine if it is gaining momentum
because a group of vendors are all launching a similar technology or because one vendor
has developed some buzz and energy around a product and that product is taking off like
hot cakes.
Alternatively, fads spike quickly and dramatically and then fade away just as quickly.
Time is a great device for distinguishing between a fad and a true trend in the field of
learning and development. It is not always a bad idea to sit back and wait to see how
quickly technology is adopted and how many companies participate in the growing
phenomenon.
What Are Data Trends and Patterns, and How Do They Impact Business Decisions?
The business can use this information for forecasting and planning, and to test theories
and strategies. Let’s look at the various methods of trend and pattern analysis in more detail
so we can better understand the various techniques.
Linear Trend - A linear pattern is a continuous decrease or increase in numbers over time.
On a graph, this data appears as a straight line angled diagonally up or down (the angle
may be steep or shallow). So the trend either can be upward or downward.

Exponential Trend - This technique produces non linear curved lines where the data rises
or falls, not at a steady rate, but at a higher rate. Instead of a straight line pointing diagonally
up, the graph will show a curved line where the last point in later years is higher than the
first year, if the trend is upward.
Damped Trend - In this analysis, the line is curved line to show data values rising or falling
initially, and then showing a point where the trend (increase or decrease) stops rising or
falling.
Seasonality - One can identify a seasonality pattern when fluctuations repeat over fixed
periods of time and are therefore predictable and where those patterns do not extend
beyond a one year period. Seasonality may be caused by factors like weather, vacation,
and holidays. It usually consists of periodic, repetitive, and generally regular and predictable
patterns. Seasonality can repeat on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis.

Irregular/Random Patterns - This type of analysis reveals fluctuations in a time series.
These fluctuations are short in duration, erratic in nature and follow no regularity in the
occurrence pattern. In prediction, the objective is to “model” all the components to some
trend patterns to the point that the only component that remains unexplained is the random
component.

Cyclical Patterns - Cyclical patterns occur when fluctuations do not repeat over fixed
periods of time and are therefore unpredictable and extend beyond a year.
Every dataset is unique, and the identification of trends and patterns in the underlying
the data is important. If a business wishes to produce clear, accurate results, it must choose
the algorithm and technique that is the most appropriate for a particular type of data and
analysis. For example, the decision to the ARIMA or Holt-Winter time series forecasting
method for a particular dataset will depend on the trends and patterns within that dataset.
A basic understanding of the types and uses of trend and pattern analysis is crucial, if an
enterprise wishes to take full advantage of these analytical techniques and produce reports
and findings that will help the business to achieve its goals and to compete in its market of
choice

Reasons why Trends affects the Society
affects everything we do -what we buy, think and our actions
affects us physically, socially and psychologically
Psychological effects Society
changes the way why you buy things
you buy it because it is "in" or because it is popular
buy something because you want them
majority of us will follow it , almost everyone has the same idea, proud etc.
we're afraid to stand alone so we follow trends
Physical effects on Society
dress, look differently to "fit" with the crowd
change of attitudes and behavior
The Effects from Trends Towards Media/ Business Industry
influences the products and advertisements they use and produce
use trends to their advantage
tries to make their product a trend "trend-setter"
to gain revenue and more attention
Solutions:
What to do:
Reduce energy
consumption
Travel Green

Exercises 2:
Directions: Based from the readings/article on fad/trend you just studied answer the
following questions. (Each correct response will be given two points).
1. If a certain product becomes trend or fad, can we say that Information Communications
and Technology has done a part of it? Support your contention.
2. As a role model how would you guide the kids who are hooked on the futile trend or fad?
3. As a result of modernization, people were already obsessed with the trend and fad. Is it
considered practical or impractical? Support your answer.
5. How could you distinguish that a fad is a part of a trend or vice versa?

3. Non-linear curved lines where the data rises or falls not at a steady rate , but at a high
rate is called a damped trend.
4. Exponential trend indicates that sales were very slow in early years, but the product has
been getting increasingly popular in later years.
5. Periods of time and are therefore predictable and where those patterns do not extend
beyond one year period is seasonality pattern.
7.Cyclical patterns occur when fluctuations do not repeat over fixed periods of time and are
therefore unpredictable and extend beyond a year.
8. A random pattern time series is one with statistical properties such as mean, where
variances are all constant over time.
9. Exponential trend produces non linear curved lines where the data rises or falls, not at a
steady rate, but at a higher rate.
Directions: Give and explain at least three concrete instances about the cause and effect
relationship on a fad or a trend. Number 1 is serve as an example. (Correct and specific
example is equivalent five points).
1. Boys tend to drop-out school than girls. According to the survey it is because they
disengaged at school and say that school is a waste of time. They love to be carefree at
any schoolwork. Boys spend more time on the internet and playing video games. That is
why they tend to have sporadic employment and receive low wages. They must engage in a
blue collar job like construction worker or etc., in order to earn a living for themselves or for
their family.

C. Assessment/Application/Outputs:
Directions: Express your reflection on the the following situation . State it in at least (5)
paragraphs. Refer the scoring rubrics for your overall score.
Mixing up fads and trends often leaves executives frustrated, confused, and – worst of all –
fearing innovation. Both fads and trends can play an important role in an organization’s
success- but they must be treated differently.
1. Inventions/ innovations are part of advancements: but did we see its terrifying effect? In
nature there are neither rewards nor punishments; there are consequences. Reflect on
this!
