Linear equation

(SLOPE AND Y-INTERCEPT)

Problem: Solve the equation of slope intercept, slope of the line is m = 8 and passes through
the point (4, 6).

Solution: The general equation of slope intercept is y = mx + c

First we have to find the y intercept value .Here the given is
Slope m = 8 x = 4, y = 6
Substitute this value into the formula we get
6 = 8*4 + c
6 = 32 + c
Add both sides -32 we get
6-32 = c
c = -26
Substitute the y intercept value in the general equation,
y = 8x-26
Therefore slope intercept equation is y = 8x-26
Linear equation
(SOLVING BY SUBSTITUTION)
Problem: Solve the following system:
x + y = 11
3x - y = 5

Solution: Solve the first equation for y

(you could solve for x - it
doesn't matter).

y = 11 – x

Now, substitute 11 - x for y

in the second equation. This gives
the equation one variable, which
earlier algebra work has taught
you how to do.

3x - (11 - x) = 5
3x - 11 + x = 5
4x = 16
x=4

Now, substitute 4 for x in

either equation and solve for y.
(We use the first equation below.

4 + y = 11
y=7

The solution is the ordered pair,

(4, 7).
System of Inequalities
(GRAPHING IN TWO VARIABLES)
Problem: Graph y < x.

Solution: First graph the equation y = x.

However, the line must be drawn dashed
because the less than sign tells us the
line is not included in the
solution.
Next, test a point that is located above
the line and one that is below the line.
Any point you pick above the line, such
as (0, 2), y is greater than x,
so points above the line are not in-
cluded in the solution. Points below the
line, such as (3, -3) have a y
value that is less than the x
value, so all points below the line are
included in the solution.
Quadratic Equation
(USING QUADRATIC FORMULA)
Problem: Solve 3x2 + 5x = -1 for x.
Formula: -b ± SQRT(b2 - 4ac)
x = -------------------
2a
Solution: First find the standard form of
the equation and determine a, b,
and c.
3x2 + 5x + 1 = 0
a=3
b=5
c=1
Plug the values you found for
a, b, and c into the
quadratic formula.
-5 ± SQRT(52 - 4(3)(1))
x = -----------------------
2*3
Perform any indicated operations.
-5 ± SQRT(25 - 12)
x = ------------------
6
-5 ± SQRT(13)
x = -------------
6

The solutions are as follows:

-5 + SQRT(13) -5 - SQRT(13)
x = -------------, -------------
6 6
Quadratic Equation
(BY FACTORING)

Problem: Solve 3x2 + x - 2 = 0 for x.

Solution: (3x - 2)(x + 1) = 0

Use the principle of zero products,

which says, if ab = 0, either
a, b, or both must be
equal to zero.

3x - 2 = 0, x + 1 = 0
3x = 2 , x = -1
x = (2/3)

x = -1, (2/3)

Problem: Solve x2 + 5x + 6 = 0.

Solution:

So the first thing I have to do is factor:

x2 + 5x + 6 = (x + 2)(x + 3)

Set this equal to zero:

(x + 2)(x + 3) = 0

Solve each factor:

x + 2 = 0  or  x + 3 = 0
x = –2  or  x = – 3

The solution to x2 + 5x + 6 = 0 is x = –3, –2

                                             12 = `<< 23/14>>` x
                                               x = `<< 168/14>>`
                                               x = `<< 84/7>>`

Problem: SOLVE

Solution:

Let's say you have the expression  . Now, if you want to square this entire expression, you
would simply say

To go even further, you can use an exponent law that states:

In other words, when you have 2 exponents (ie one exponent is raised to another exponent),
you simply multiply the two exponents and that product will become the new exponent.

 Start with the given expression

 Use the previous identity   to rewrite the expression. So we're simply
going to multiply the exponents 3 and 2

 Multiply

 Now raise 2 to the 6th power to get 64

Problem:

Find the explicit formula for a sequence where r = 2 and

Solution:

The formula says that we need to know the first term and the common ratio. We have r, but do
not know a1. However, we have enough information to find it. We know that when n = 12, the
12th term in the sequence is 14336.

If we simplify that equation, we can find a1.

(BINOMIAL THEOREM)
Problem:

Expand (2x – 5y)7

I'll plug "2x", "–5y", and "7" into the Binomial Theorem, counting up from zero to seven
to get each term. (I mustn't forget the "minus" sign that goes with the second term in
the binomial.)

(2x – 5y)7 = 7C0 (2x)7(–5y)0 + 7C1 (2x)6(–5y)1 + 7C2 (2x)5(–5y)2

+ 7C6 (2x)1(–5y)6 + 7C7 (2x)0(–5y)7

Solution:

(1)(128x7)(1) + (7)(64x6)(–5y) + (21)(32x5)(25y2) + (35)(16x4)(–125y3)

+ (35)(8x3)(625y4) + (21)(4x2)(–3125y5) + (7)(2x)(15625y6)

+ (1)(1)(–78125y7)

= 128x7 – 2240x6y + 16800x5y2 – 70000x4y3 + 175000x3y4 – 262500x2y5

Sequences
(HARMONIC SEQUENCE)
Problem:

Prove that sequence 1, 1/5, 1/9........ Is a harmonic sequence and find its 10th term?

Solution:

Reciprocal of given sequence 1, 5, 9…. Is satisfies the arithmetic sequence relation.

According to first step we can say the given sequence is harmonic sequence. So that the
formula to find nth term is,

Tn = [a+(n-1)d]
       Here n = 10, a = 1, and d = 4.
               T10 = 1 + (10-1)4
               T10 = 1 + (9 *4)
               T10 = 1 + 36
               T10 = 37.
          Hence 10th term of harmonic sequence =1/37.

Problem:
How that 3, 3/5, 3/7,.................. Is a harmonic sequence, and find it’s 8th term?

Solution:
 Reciprocal of given sequence 3, 3/5, 3/7…. Is satisfies the arithmetic sequence relation.
 According to first step we can say the given sequence is harmonic sequence. So that the
formula to find nth term is,
            Tn = [a+(n-1)d]
      Here n = 8, a = 3, and d = 2.
             T8 = 3 + (8-1)2
            T8 = 3 + (7 *2)
            T8 = 3 + 14
            T8 = 17.
        Hence 8th  term of harmonic sequence = 3/17.
