TIMELINE OF BASKETBALL EVENTS 1891 - In 1891, basketball had been invented. All of this began in a YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, where Dr. James Naismith took a position as an educator. The sport's core theme was to be played indoors in a confined room. 1892 - Dr. James Naismith devised 13 different rules to ensure that each team had a fair chance of winning. 1894 - For the first two years, a soccer ball (football) was used. The first basketball was marketed in 1894. It was laced, about 32 inches (81 cm) in diameter, or about 4 inches (10 cm) larger than a soccer ball and weighed less than 20 ounces (567 grams). 1896 - The first college basketball game was played on January 18, 1896, when the University of Iowa invited student athletes from the newly formed University of Chicago to compete in an experimental game. The result was Chicago 15, Iowa 12, which was a little different from today's hundred-point games. 1907 - In 1907, the Smart Set Athletic Club, St. Christopher Club, Marathon Athletic Club, Alpha Physical Culture Club, and the Jersey City Colored YMCA founded the amateur, all-black Olympian Athletic League in New York City, which included the Smart Set Athletic Club, St. Christopher Club, Marathon Athletic Club, Alpha Physical Culture Club, and the Jersey City Colored YMCA. The first inter-city basketball game between two black teams was played in 1907, when the Smart Set Athletic Club of Brooklyn travelled to Washington. They were known as the “Grave Diggers”. 1936 – Basketball was finally introduced in the Olympics. 1940 - Fordham vs. the University of Pittsburgh is the first basketball game to be broadcast live from Madison Square Garden. 1946 - In 1946, a group of executives in New York City founded the Basketball Association of America, a new professional basketball league (BAA). 1948 - The scale of the laceless molded ball had been fixed at 30 inches by 1948–49, when it was made official (76 cm). 1954 - The Minneapolis Lakers became the first team in NBA history to win three consecutive championships. 1964 - The Boston Celtics have won the most NBA championships (17 in total), with the majority of their dominance in the game coming during the 1960s, when they won eight consecutive titles from 1959 to 1966. 1979 - Chris Ford of the Boston Celtics made the NBA's first three-point shot with 3:48 remaining in the first period on October 12, 1979, in a game against the Houston Rockets at Boston Garden. 1983 - In the highest scoring game in NBA history, the Detroit Pistons beat the Denver Nuggets 186-184. 1984 – The “Greatest Player of All Time” a.k.a. Michael Jordan, Coming off a gold medal performance at the 1984 Olympics prospered in the pro game with a fabulous first season, earning the Rookie of the Year; Five-time NBA MVP; Six-time NBA champion; Six-time NBA Finals MVP; Ten-time All-NBA First Team; Nine time NBA All-Defensive First Team; Defensive Player of the Year; 14-time NBA All-Star; Three-time NBA All-Star MVP; 50th Anniversary All- Time Team; Ten scoring titles -- an NBA record and seven consecutive matching Chamberlain. 1996 - Ted St. Martin holds the Guinness World Record for making 5,221 straight free throws on April 28, 1996. He did so while providing a shooting clinic to students, which took him more than 7 hours to complete. - The NBA Agrees to start a womens Nation Basketball Association (WNBA) 1997 - Violet became the first woman to officiate at a major sporting event. Dee Kanter quickly joins her.
